A new smartphone app is being launched in Kirklees to give parents 50 activities they can do with their children before they turn five in a bid to boost development.
Created by St Edmund’s Nursery and Children’s Centre in Bradford, the ‘50 Things To Do Before You’re 5’ app provides families with a list of low cost, or no cost fun activities that will support learning and development in the pre-school years.
The app is now available in several regions across West Yorkshire. Families have the opportunity to choose their local area in order to access bespoke activities and suggestions.
They include visiting local woods for a ramble, blowing bubbles, laughing, dressing up, experiencing water such as rivers or canals and visiting local museums.
Cllr Viv Kendrick, Cabinet Member for Children, said: “This is a fantastic initiative and I’m delighted that Kirklees has adopted it.
“Learning should be a level playing field and all children should have the same opportunity to reach their potential. That’s why it’s absolutely crucial that children are school-ready when the time comes.
“Unfortunately, some children start school behind others in terms of development and this has an impact on their ability to learn. It’s an immediate setback and one many are never able to overcome.
“This new app will give parents 50 different activities that are shown to boost development and they’re all low cost and local. They include indoor, outdoor, seasonal, home-based and out-and-about activities, that are not only fun but will get children off to a flying start with their learning and language development.”
