#OurDay Celebrates Bradford’s local government

-

Bradford and Bradford Council are taking part in the annual social media campaign #OurDay which celebrates the work carried out by government and council officials in the city.

The 24 hour social media campaign that gives everyone who works or volunteers in local public services the chance to share their stories of how they improve the quality of life of residents, takes place today.

Bradford Council have tweeted a number of tweets displaying a number of people who work in local government and provide help to others.

The campaign rejoices a day for local government to come together for a big online celebration of the people who keep our communities going.

The 24-hour ‘day in the life of a council’ tweetathon has been organised by the LGA for the last seven years. In 2017, local authorities and other organizations took part. Close to 14,000 contributors posted 45,083 tweets, reaching more than 31 million people. As a result, #OurDay trended number 1 in the UK for the largest part of the day, as well as first worldwide in the English language.

Bradford Music & Arts Service broke a world record last year where more than 1000 children took part in a “Bamboo Tamboo” performance. Today, Bradford Council praises them for the efforts by a tweet: “Bradford’s Music & Arts Service staff make a difference to children’s lives, providing opportunities to learn and perform every day, leading to a more effective education. #OurDay”. As well as this, a number of other people have been mentioned by Bradford Council to appreciate their efforts for the community.

The LGA, which represents 370 councils in England and Wales, is encouraging as many councillors and local authority staff as possible to take a couple of minutes out of their day to tell the world what they’re doing to keep their communities running as part of the live tweetathon, from midnight on Tuesday 20 November, by using the hashtag #OurDay.

The reputation of local government has never been more important as local authorities are increasingly having to deliver more with less.

The aims of #OurDay include demonstrating the value local government provides to the public, even as councils work in an increasingly challenging financial environment, and highlighting new and innovative schemes, showing how the sector is using social media to benefit residents.

Councillor Peter Fleming, Chairman of the LGA’s Improvement and Innovation Board, said:

“#OurDay has gone from strength to strength in recent years, and we know we can make this the biggest and best yet.

“It is an opportunity for councils to highlight and shout about the amazing work they do for the public and their communities. It showcases a day in the life of local government and shines a light on all the different things that councils do over a 24-hour period.

“Councils work on behalf of their communities, providing a huge variety of services – many hidden – every day to support people and make lives better. This is a great chance for the community to go behind the scenes and hear the stories behind the services.”

Follow the hashtag #OurDay on Twitter to find out what your community is being celebrated for.
