World renowned Pakistani qawwali singer, Amjad Sabri, shot dead in Karachi
According to Pakistani media reports one of the best known qawwali singers, Amjad Sabri has been shot dead by unknown assailants in the Pakistani port city of Karachi on Wednesday.
According to the reports, Sabri, 45, was travelling in a car with an associate in a car when unknown gunmen on motorbikes opened fire at his vehicle in the city’s Liaquatabad area.
According to police officials he was shot in the chest and head and succumbed to his wounds on his way to a local hospital. The driver and associate have also been killed in the targeted attack.
Media reports quoting police sources said Sabri was shot three times, including two in the head.
Amjad Sabri was the son of renowned qawwal of the 1960’s, Ghulam Farid Sabri, and the nephew of qawwali icon Maqbool Sabri who passed away in 2011.
Maqbool Sabri along with his brother, the late Ghulam Farid Sabri, formed a formidable qawwali group in the mid-50s and became known for their soul-stirring renditions of arifana kalam (mystic poetry). Some of their most memorable and famous qawwalis include Bhar Do Jholi Meri, Tajdar-i-Haram and Mera Koi Nahin Hai Teray Siwa. Amajd Sabri was one of Pakistan’s finest qawwali singers and his loss is being mourned by many.
