The search is on for three new talented writers in the North of England as a project looks to uncover a unique take on Northern culture.

The Verb New Voices opportunity is looking to generate vibrant new writing that will showcased on BBC Radio 3, with a range of other live literature showcases at venues and festivals in the North.

The Verb, headed up by renowned poet Ian McMillan, is BBC Radio 3’s regular Friday night cabaret of the spoken word. The show delivers wordplay, feisty debate about creativity and features a strong-line up of writers and commentators.

Two artists aged 18 to 30 and one artist of any age will work alongside BBC voice coaches and producers as well as experienced talent developers at Arts Council England, funded organisations in the North – New Writing North and ARC in the North East, Contact in the North West and The Writing Squad in Yorkshire, to develop their writing and performance skills.

Poets, spoken word practitioners, fiction writers and artists who use words and sound to create exciting work will be given a generous bursary to write a new eight-minute long piece suitable for broadcast on The Verb programme and a longer piece for performance at live events in the North.

The opportunity also includes a fully funded place on an Arvon residential writing course at Lumb Bank in Yorkshire.
Alison Boyle, Relationship Manager, Literature, at Arts Council England said: “This fantastic opportunity for three artists to pen a new piece for performance in a range of showcases from MediaCity in Salford to ARC in Stockton-on-Tees, is important for many reasons. It has great potential to strengthen live literature across the North by partnering the BBC and Arts Council funded organisations in the three North regions with artists based here who have powerful things to express. We expect to see strong, distinct voices coming through.”

The three selected artists will each receive a bursary of £2,500 with the potential for additional fees from any radio interviews and performances.

The deadline for submissions is 5pm on December 13, 2013. Information about how to apply can be found online(
