Making history as the first Indian designer on the Met Gala carpet, renowned Sabyasachi Mukherjee turned heads with a relaxed, yet undeniably stylish look as a modern day Maharaja for the annual fashion extravaganza curated by Anna Wintour. This year’s theme, “The Garden of Time,” promised a fascinating exploration of fashion’s relationship with history, innovation and nature.
Indian Fashion Takes Centre Stage: The moment marked a significant historic moment for Indian fashion, solidifying its growing influence on the global fashion landscape.
A Personal Touch: Sabyasachi didn’t just make a statement; he embodied it. Ditching traditional red carpet attire, he donned an embroidered cotton duster coat from his Resort 2024 collection, layering it with dazzling tourmalines, pearls, emeralds and diamonds from Sabyasachi High Jewellery. Tinted sunglasses and brown loafers completed his effortlessly cool ensemble.
Alia Bhatt’s Ethereal Saree: Sabyasachi’s impact extended beyond himself. He also designed the outfit for Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt, a repeat Met Gala attendee. Her sheer pastel-coloured saree with a 23-foot long train paid homage to the “Garden of Time” theme; echoing nature’s beauty with delicate floral motifs embroidered using silk floss, glass beading, and semi-precious gemstones and an exaggerated train fringed with glass beads. The hand-crafted blouse is complemented with studded emeralds, Basra pearls, tourmalines and multi coloured sapphires. Talking to Vogue from the red carpet, Alia highlighted the meticulous craftsmanship involved, taking a collective effort of over 160 artisans and nearly 2000 hours to create this breathtaking piece.
A Growing Influence: Sabyasachi’s Met Gala appearance follows Natasha Poonawalla’s stunning Sabyasachi creation in 2022. This trend signifies the growing appreciation for Indian design aesthetics on the global stage. With each year, Indian fashion continues to leave its mark on the world’s most prestigious fashion events.
