The government has announced that May’s local and mayoral elections in England will be postponed for a year due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The announcement has come following the Electoral Commission’s concerns raised with the government oon the ‘growing risks to the delivery of the polls & to mitigate the impact on voters, campaigners & electoral administrators.’
The Electoral Commission shared ‘concerns about the real risks to the successful delivery of the scheduled 7 May 2020 elections.’
A Government spokeswoman said: ‘We will bring forward legislation to postpone local, mayoral and police and crime commissioner elections until May next year. ‘We will also work with the devolved administrations to ensure that they have the necessary powers to do the same.’
