Joshua out to make a statement

0

By Sonia RANDEV

This week Matchroom boxing announced the highly anticipated world title unification bout between WBO world heavy weight champion Joseph Parker and WBA, IBF and IBO world heavy weight champion Anthony Joshua.
The fight is set to take place on March 31st at the Principality Stadium, Cardiff where the two men will battle it out, putting all belts on the line.

At a press conference earlier this week, Anthony Joshua expressed his desire to a packed media room that adding the WBO title to his collection will pave the way for a showdown with WBC World Heavy Weight Champion Deontay Wilder.

“It’s good to be back, doing what I enjoy. Last time I was out was in Cardiff. It was a great night. I took my time cause I knew I really wanted to set up for a big 2018.I didn’t do nothing spectacular but I made sure I got the win and that was the most important thing. Now we are here and as I said it’s kind of about making history now and we’ve always been moving in that direction so it’s an honour to be up here with another World Champ.”

With Joseph Parker’s Promoter causing a stir in the build up to securing this fight, his comments were not taken too lightly by Anthony Joshua’s Promoter Eddie Hearn who questioned David Higgins remarks:

“You can’t say what you’ve been saying and then when you are five feet away from him, let your bum deceive you. You just said that he might have some mental weaknesses but you actually said he is mentally weaker. You don’t do what he has been doing if you are mentally weak. You don’t walk out in front of your home city and win gold at the Olympics. You don’t walk out in front of 80’000, empty your tank, get up of the floor and stop Wladimir Klitschko if you are mentally weak. You also said he has a glass chin, we are going to break his glass chin, don’t tell me, tell him, he’s sat right here.”

Joseph Parker last fought on UK soil in Manchester, defending his belt against Hughie Fury whom many thought had done enough to beat the man from New Zealand.
Speaking to the press,Parker said he is going to train extremely hard for this fight as he has a big challenge in front of him:

“This is going to be the hardest in terms of training and putting the most work in as I have a big challenge in front of me.Joshua, i’ve watched him for a long time and he’s watched me. I know his strengths, mind and weaknesses. Hopefully I’ll catch him on the chin and knock him out.”

Anthony Joshua believes this fight will bring fireworks and be a great fight for the spectators.

“We’ll bring fireworks. It’s going to be good. It will take more than a human to stop me from where I’m destined to be.”

Anthony Joshua vs Joseph Parker live on Sky Sports Box Office, March 31st at the Principality Stadium – Cardiff.
Expect a big drama show and quite possibly one of Joshua’s hardest battles to overcome on his journey to world heavy weight domination.

TEAM GB Flyweight flying the flag high

By SONIA RANDEV

TEAM GB Laura Rose Pain is not your average athlete.

Born with dis-located hips, having trouble walking in her early years and then being told that the odds were stacked against her and that there was a strong possibility that she may not be able to participate in sport, would be enough to discourage most from seeing any positive light in the future.

However this was not something Laura was willing to accept. Her determination and passion became an obsession to change the outcome of her current situation and prove the doctors wrong.
Laura has always been a sports enthusiast and even against doctors orders she participated in physical activity by playing football in her Primary years. It was thereafter with the rule that there was not to be any mixed teams; Laura found a girl’s team called Guildford Saints. She then moved to another club called Mousey before getting scouted for Chelsea Ladies.

She started playing for The Chelsea Ladies Academy from the age of 14 where she felt her development as a football player was really improving, however her hips started to get a clicking sensation every time she played. She was later informed by the doctors that she had a condition called snapping hips which is when two bones snap together every time you move your legs. The decision then followed for her to hang her boots up.

“It wasn’t an easy decision to stop playing football. Even at times when I had felt discomfort I stopped for a while with hope the pain would ease but reality was I could no longer continue.”

After a successful operation at Great Ormond Street Hospital, her passion for sports was stronger than ever and it was here she decided to try something different to enable her to continue building her fitness. The hospital had advised that kickboxing would be a good option as it would help with flexibility in the muscles.

“I still had a huge passion for sport, I wanted to move sports and try something completely different. So I heard there was a kickboxing club down the road from me and thought it would be worth me attending to keep my fitness up and learn self defense at the same time.”

A few years down the line after competing in a few kickboxing tournaments she decided to make the move into Boxing. It was from this moment of stepping into a boxing gym that she knew exactly what she wanted to do with her life.An intense burning desire to help achieve her goals to make the Team GB squad.

“I stepped into a boxing gym to only improve my hand skill. It was from my first outing that I felt a buzz like I had never felt before. It’s fair to say I felt a connection with the sport instantly. With Boxing I was taken in straight away and made to feel like I belonged and was part of a family. I simply didn’t want to put the gloves down; it was a new challenge but a challenge that I Knew I wouldn’t get bored with.”

Wanting to follow suit and head in the same direction as her role model Nicola Adams, she participated in trials to secure a place in the squad.

“I took part in a series of trials called discover your fight. After tough sparring, boxing and fitness tests, I was selected for Team GB Boxing. What an experience this has been. I have so many people to thank that have supported me with my journey so far.My Kick Boxing coach Sean McCarthy and John my boxing trainer who is everything you could ever want in a coach. My family who have encouraged me to carry on. I am thoroughly enjoying being a part of the squad and look forward to setting some new goals for 2018.I just want to inspire the next generation and focus on the task ahead of me.”

So from being told she may never be able to play sports to now becoming a member of the Team GB squad it is testament to the dedication and character she has shown to make a lifelong dream become a reality.
19 Year old Laura Pain is flying her own flag high, proving that if you really want something it takes sacrifice,self-belief and determination. A shining example to all.A role model who has the ability to inspire the most uninspired with all that she has accomplished so far.

Super Sandeep set for Stardom

By Sonia RANDEV

Ever since she was able to walk, Sandeep Tak has had a football glued to her feet.

A lifelong Manchester United fan, football has played a pivotal part in her younger years being the only female to represent her school team during primary years.

In a community that in some aspect is still yet to embrace British Asians pursuing a career in football, Sandeep’s journey has been a positive reflection that not all suffer from the fear of change or the fear of allowing their children to take a non traditional Asian path.

Her family have supported her decision to carve out a career in football, encouraging her to follow her dreams. Being brought up in a football mad family has certainly made these particular choices easier, with both her father and Grandfather loving the game just as much as she does.

“Telling my Parents I wanted to play football and that I had joined the School team was really easy as they were fans of the game them. As kids they also use to play football, especially my dad who wanted to become a professional player. Since my first training session they have been extremely supportive and ensured I had everything I needed to be the best that I can be.”

So where did it all start for Sandeep?

Scouted in 2010 by Queens Park Rangers and playing for their development squad, Sandeep made the decision to travel to America as part of a Scholarship programme playing for Lowa Western. After three and a half months out there she returned and played for Notts County development and trained with the first team for Watford Ladies. She has now moved to Tottenham Ladies where she feels she is really learning and developing as a player.

“This is my first season at Tottenham Ladies and I am really enjoying playing here. They are a truly welcoming club  and treat you like family. I have had a good first half season and looking forward to the second half and moving up.”

Having the ability to play in a few positions on the field provides not just more opportunities for Sandeep but also for any club she plays for.

“I am looking to play in the number ten position but I can also play in central midfield, left and right forward so I am quite versatile and provide a few attacking options for clubs.”

With so much talk surrounding the lack of British Asians in a top flight football league, Sandeep has high ambitions of where she sees herself in the next few years.

“I am studying business management at University and will graduate in 2019 but the plan is to play football full time.  I want to continue developing myself so that I can push for a first team place at Spurs Ladies. I then want to go on and represent my Country. I am training 6 days a week along with my studies and various other things but my mindset is focused and determined.”

Mo Farah Wins The BBC Sports Personality of Year Award

0

By MO BHANA

Sir Mo Farah has been awarded the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award for the first time.

Anthony Joshua was the firm favourite to win the coveted prize, however, the four-time Olympic gold medallist went on to win the famous award for the first time.

Liverpool legend, Kenny Dalglish made the big announcement, which shocked many in Liverpool’s Echo Arena and perhaps most of all Mo Farah. The long-distance star was not at the ceremony because one of his children is ill, so appeared by video feed.

“I didn’t see that coming. I honestly thought I wasn’t going to win it,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“We have such amazing sports in the UK with people doing great Lewis Hamilton, Jonnie Peacock and Anthony Joshua.

“I thought my closest would be after London 2012. I guess anything can happen.

“It means a lot to win this. I am very surprised to win tonight and I’m just sorry I can’t be there to celebrate.”

Famous names from the world of sport and politics paid tribute to Farah with Lewis Hamilton tweeting: “Congrats to my bro @Mo_Farah for winning BBC’s SPOTY tonight! Well deserved and a true legend of the sport!”

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan tweeted: “Double double Olympic champion, World champion, six-time European champion and now Sports Personality of the Year.  Congratulations to Londoner Londoner and legend Sir @Mo_Farah! #SPOTY.”

Guardiola’s Manchester City Slay Manchester United’s Premier League Title Bid At Old Trafford

0

By MO BHANA

Manchester City look a near-certainty to win the Premier League after Pep Guardiola’s men consigned the Red Devils to a 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford, sending the citizens 11 points clear.

This long-awaited Manchester derby was a game complete with crucial errors, trivial fouls and a lot of controversy.

Jose Mourinho had set his United side up to be resolute but ultimately helped to hand Pep Guardiola’s men the title with 22 games to spare.

City scored first when man-of-the-match David Silva slotted in from close range after 42 minutes, only for poor defending in first-half stoppage time when Nicolas Otamendi and Fabian Delph allowed Marcus Rashford to stab home.

However, Otamendi made amends nine minutes after the break when Romelu Lukaku – who had a nightmare game – lashed at a clearance in the area and the City defender pounced on the rebound to score.

The Portuguese has now lost nine matches in all competitions against the Catalan – no manager has beaten him more times – and, even more importantly, City now look a class apart.

Jose Mourinho claimed referee, Michael Oliver was partially to blame for Ut’s defeat  because he made an important mistake during the game

“The result was made with a big penalty not given. That would have been 2-2 with 20 minutes to go. Michael was unlucky because it was a clear penalty.”

“Manchester City are a very good team and they are protected by the luck.”

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola believes his side won because they were the better team during the course of the match: “We won because we were better. We are still in December, if we have 11 points when we play the second derby in April then maybe I will tell you that we have the title.”

“We won at Old Trafford again, that is why I am the most pleased and of course for the three points. We played good, with a lot of courage. I’m so satisfied.”

Liverpool remain fourth in the Premier League table, two points behind third-placed Chelsea, after a 1-1 draw in the Merseyside derby against Everton.

Liverpool took the lead after Mo Salah’s stunning finish, which was just reward for the manner in which Jurgen Klopp’s side performed.

Sadio Mane wasted a chance to make it 2-0 before Everton, who had only one shot on target from open play, were awarded the 77th-minute penalty after the referee ruled Dejan Lovren’s push on Dominic Calvert-Lewin was worthy of a penalty.

Everton captain Wayne Rooney duly equalised and the match ended all square.

An angry Klopp claimed Everton should never have been awarded a penalty in an explosive interview with Sky Sports.

“Calvert-Lewin is smart and takes a step but even then it’s nothing,” he said.

“The referees don’t understand that the player is doing that. I cannot believe in a game like this when only one team is trying to win it and the other team were never in our box, and then you give it, you open the door for them like this.

“In my understanding, it’s not a penalty.”

The German later apologised to the interviewer, and Everton boss Sam Allardyce saw the penalty decision in a different light.

“He can moan all he wants but it’s a penalty,” said Allardyce. “It’s an extremely brave decision and I think he got the decision right.”

Everton stay 10th in the Premier League table, whilst Liverpool remain fourth, two points behind third-placed Chelsea, lost against West Ham, thanks to Marko Arnautovic’s first goal which was enough to give David Moyes his first three points at the London Stadium.

Tottenham ended a four-game run without a league win by putting five past Stoke at Wembley, including two goals from Harry Kane.

Burnley moved level on points with fifth-placed Spurs by overcoming Watford with a Scott Arfield goal.

A Steve Mounie double gave Huddersfield a 2-0 win over Brighton and moved them five points clear of the relegation zone but Newcastle lost 3-2 at home to Leicester in Saturday’s late kick-off.

Swansea lifted themselves off the bottom with Wilfried Bony’s late goal the difference in a 1-0 win over West Brom.

Paul Clement’s side moved above Crystal Palace, who saw Christian Benteke miss an injury-time penalty in a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth – both Cherries goals coming from 35-year-old Jermain Defoe.

Women increasing ‘Onna’ in sport

0

It was 2012 before women were able to compete in every event on the Olympic programme, 2014 before they could play professional cricket in England, 2016 before they could play professional rugby, and in 2017 they were finally allowed to join Muirfield golf Club.

Women have always had to play catch up where sports have been concerned not just on a local level but on an international level. Thank goodness things are changing not just internationally but also locally.

Local Ju-Jitsu club, Onna in Bradford proves the case.  Onna (which means honour) Ju-Jitsu started in 2000, by Mumtaz Khan, (professionally known as Sensei Mumtaz) and have really started to change the playing field.

Mumtaz came across Ju-Jitsu by accident and pursued the sport after rigorous training, and attaining her Sandan (3rd) Yondan (4th) and Godan (5th) degree blackbelt and then set up her club which started with just two students. The club now has a regular membership of over 500 students built from networks within the community and local schools.

Whilst the club attracts people of all age groups, genders and backgrounds, you can’t help but notice how the club is hugely influenced by its female members, who are not only training, but competing and winning at national competitions.

The British Ju-Jitsu National Championships were held in April this year and Onna Ju-Jitsu Club came away with eight medals (three Gold, two Silver and three Bronze) with women sitting firmly at the top of those accolades.

One of the worthy medalists was Jabila Khan, who won gold in the continuous fighting category. Jabila is a teacher at St Bede’s and St Joseph’s College. She has been doing Ju-Jitsu for around twelve years. The 44-year-old teacher explains that she had always wanted to take on a martial art but finding one that fitted around her hectic lifestyle and family commitments was quite hard. She told Asian Sunday that there was also a fear of what her family and people think. However, when her son started Ju-Jitsu a few years later, she said she couldn’t stop herself and thought she couldn’t spend the rest of her life thinking about what other people would say and think.

Jabila said: “I worked and lived for my family and this was something just for me. I feel I can be myself openly when I am training and I felt good. Watching me train motivated my daughter who is now 14 years old to also start training. She is so committed and dedicated now to Ju-Jitsu that she gets quite upset if she has to miss any sessions for any reason.

“This year in my second attempt at competing at the nationals I achieved a gold medal which I was completely over the moon about. All that hard work had paid off.

“Working with Sensei Mumtaz has taught me so much but most of all she has helped me believe in myself and due to this my confidence has grown so much. She is truly an inspiration and a role

Nargis Zeb

model to me and other women who don’t think they can achieve at such high levels.”

Also competing in the same category, was Insurance broker Nargis Zeb, who won a silver.

“Nargis’s opening fight was one of the best fight’s I’ve ever seen.  It was so exciting to watch and all her hard work during squad training sessions paid off on the day.” Said Sensei Mumtaz

Nargis has been doing Ju-Jitsu for two and a half years. She tells us that she has always wanted to do a form of martial arts and when she tried Ju-Jitsu she fell in love with it.

The thirty-six-year-old moved to Bradford after marrying and didn’t really know anyone in the city. So, to network and make new friends, she chose to enroll on a Ju-Jitsu class.

“Taking part in a sport like Ju-Jitsu can help massively with confidence. You meet new people, you interact and work as a team, it teaches you to focus on the things you want and off the things don’t want.” Said Nargis

“I’m in my thirties and have achieved something so wonderful through Ju-Jitsu and so can everyone else.” She adds.

As Muslim women, both Nargis and Jabila feel that there is too much stereotyping in the media.

Nargis says, “Being part of this sport shows we (Muslim women) strive to achieve other things and sports is one of them”

Jabila identifies with this and said: “In today’s climate where Islam is shown in a negative light at every opportunity it is fantastic for the media to show some positive angles particularly poor old Muslim women doing a sport that isn’t typical for an Asian woman.

“As Muslim women, we can achieve everything that any other male or female, Muslim or Non-Muslim can. We need to stop thinking about what others will think of us and move forward with the times. We can be educated, hold down a job/career and look after our families. We can also look after our health and fitness and be good role models to our children. There is no end to what we can achieve if we don’t limit ourselves to the stereotypical image that has been upheld and demonstrated for so many generations.”

Sensei Mumtaz, says she is extremely proud of how well TeamONNA performed at the Championships representing Bradford and how well women are doing in this sport.

The next Inter – club championship is taking place this November where the club will be selecting students to develop for the next championships and we’re pretty sure there will be more badass winners.

ECB to host Consultation Workshop in Bradford on South Asian Community Engagement

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), the governing body for cricket in England and Wales, is planning to run a series of regional consultation workshops, including one in Bradford’s at the Carlisle Business Centre on 18 July from 7pm-9.30pm, to help improve its understanding and levels of engagement with South Asian cricket fans across the country.

The ECB wants to ensure that cricket is a game for everyone; full of great experiences whether people play, watch, follow, or work in the game.

To help with this, the ECB wants to hear feedback, ideas and thoughts on how cricket can do this for Bradford’s South Asian communities. They want to hear from people from Afghani, Bangladeshi, Indian, Nepalese, Pakistani, or Sri Lankan communities.

Whether you are involved in cricket or not; you could be a community leader, regular player, volunteer, coach, school teacher, an armchair fan or a parent of a cricket mad child – everyone is welcome to attend.

As well as Bradford, the workshops will take place in seven other regional venues in Birmingham, Dewsbury, Manchester, East and West London, Leicester and Sheffield. They are designed to encourage local communities to share their thoughts, ideas and experiences on playing, attending or following the game.

People interested in attending can register by visiting ecb.co.uk/southasiancricket or emailing rsvp@ecb.co.uk.

Lord Patel of Bradford OBE, independent director at the ECB, said: “We know that there is an incredible passion for the game within South Asian communities nationwide. Cricket is in their DNA and we want them to help shape our future plans for the game.

Today we are only scratching the surface of the potential engagement with cricket from the UK’s South Asian communities. This is a huge opportunity to grow the game and we want to hear from people in South Asian communities who play or follow cricket, but also from those who don’t. Get involved, tell us what you think and contribute to deliver a change and help make cricket a better experience for all.”

Mobeen Butt, Project Lead for the Parks to Pavillions project said: “Having spent over a year researching the development of Asian cricket in West Yorkshire, I understand how far Asian cricket has come. From playing in the alleyways with improvised bats and milk crates for wickets to overcoming inequality, deprivation, family pressures, and lack of facilities.

“However, there is much more to do to develop the game and infrastructure. This is an unmissable opportunity for any South Asian cricket player, administrator or enthusiast to speak directly to the ECB and have your say about how cricket should be developed in the coming years. Don’t just remain an arm chair critic, coming along, take part and add your voice.”

Taking place at the Carlisle Business Centre in Bradford on Tuesday 18 July, the workshops will take place throughout July and August, and will not only offer guests an opportunity to have their voices heard, but also give them the chance to get a taste for the sport both at a local level through tickets to local NatWest T20 Blast matches as well as being entered into a draw to win four VIP tickets to England vs India or England vs Pakistan in 2018.
