Conor Benn is eager to face world champions as he sets his eyes on facing the WBA welterweight champion Yordenis Ugas if the fight can be materialised.
Conor Benn is the son of Nigel Benn, the former world champion who reigned as the middleweight champion in the early 90’s. Known as one of the greatest champions in British boxing, Nigel held the WBO middleweight title, the WBC super-middleweight title and the Commonwealth middleweight title.
Conor is now on an outstanding record of 20 fights without a single loss including 13 knockouts. Known as the destroyer, Conor started his professional debut back in 2016 and won in devasting fashion at the O2 Arena with a technical knockout over Ivaylo Boyanov.
Recently, Conor fought the former world champion, Chris Algieri at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool. In the second round of the fight, Conor shook Chris with a left hook which sent Chris tumbling across the ring. Many have stated it wasn’t a knockdown, but the ref started the count.
Jabbing through Chris’s offence, Conor landed a brutal left-right combo in the last 14 seconds of the fourth round which dropped Chris and was counted out after not being able to get up.
Conor has expressed he would love to fight another former champion Kell Brook once (he believes) he beats Amir Khan in their bad blood rivalry which is set to take place in February.
Conor added, “I’m just ready for who’s next. That’s sort of my mindset. I’m just ready to take on better challenges”.
When asked if he found Chris the hardest fighter he’s fought, Conor explained, “No, each fighter presents different struggles”.
Being the son of Nigel brings a lot of challenges as you’re always under the radar of fanatic boxing fans. Naturally, fans will compare Conor to his father Nigel.
Conor even explained he has been speaking to his manager, Eddie Hearn about the possibility to fight Adrien Broner, another former world champion and has continued to mention names to his promoter on who he should face next.
“Adrien Broner won’t take the fight. Amir Khan didn’t, and Kell Brook didn’t. I beat whoever they put in front of me.
“If it gets closer to a world title or a big fight, I would love it any day of the week. I’ll have it next”.
Hopeful Conor is keen to take on bigger challenges and from his resume, Conor doesn’t seem to be far off from being a world champion one day.
What are your thoughts? Do you think Conor can surpass the achievements of his father Nigel?
