Matthew Perry’s untimely death in October 2023 sent shockwaves across the world, and now, a new documentary promises to uncover the deeper story behind the tragedy. Titled Matthew Perry: A Hollywood Tragedy, the documentary is set to premiere on Peacock on 25 February and will delve into the Friends star’s struggles, his lasting impact, and the disturbing events surrounding his final days.

The newly released trailer, spanning just under two minutes, paints a haunting picture-opening with audio from the first responders who arrived at Perry’s Los Angeles home after he was found unresponsive in his hot tub. Through never-before-seen footage and heartfelt tributes, the documentary pieces together the story of a man who made millions laugh, but battled his own demons behind the scenes.

Morgan Fairchild, who played Chandler Bing’s mother, reflects on Perry’s legacy in the trailer, saying: “He really touched people’s lives.” But alongside the admiration, Matthew Perry: A Hollywood Tragedy also explores the darker side of fame, exposing the people who allegedly preyed on Perry’s vulnerability.

The documentary follows the shocking developments in the investigation into Perry’s ketamine overdose, which has led to criminal charges against five individuals-including two doctors, his former assistant, and a woman infamously known as the “Ketamine Queen.” Prosecutors allege that Perry’s assistant delivered the fatal dose, and while three of the accused have already pleaded guilty, two others are currently awaiting trial. The documentary even features an interview with US attorney Martin Estrada, who sheds light on the legal battle still unfolding.

However, while some fans are eager for answers, others feel uneasy about the timing of the documentary.

One fan commented: “I will definitely be watching this. As a recovering addict myself, his book inspired me. I miss him so much, and I cried like a baby when he died, which I don’t usually do over celebrities… I’m excited to hear the truth.”

Another added: “So many people, myself included, found Chandler relatable… I thought I was like Chandler for most of my life and I still do at times.”

But not everyone is comfortable with the documentary’s approach. “The title is a bit sad and is hurting. Please don’t remember a wonderful person who left us as a tragedy… He was sweet, kind, and funny. Yes, he went through a lot, but there’s no reason to make a business out of it.”

Some even questioned the ethics of its release: “Anyone else think this is a little gross considering he died a little over a year ago?”

Directed by Robert Palumbo and produced by ITN Productions, Matthew Perry: A Hollywood Tragedy will no doubt spark conversations about addiction, fame, and justice. But whether it’s a necessary deep dive or an exploitative cash grab-that’s a debate fans are already having.
