Discussions have begun on a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, Netflix’s animated sensation of the summer.

According to a report in Variety, Netflix and Sony are already in talks to develop a follow-up to the film, which has rapidly become the streamer’s most-watched title of all time.

While no further details about the project have yet been revealed, co-director Maggie Kang – who helmed the feature alongside Chris Appelhans – has previously suggested that a sequel could explore the histories of Rumi’s fellow group members, Zoey and Mira.

“We’ve set up so much for potential backstory,” Kang told Variety. “Obviously, there’s a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored, and we had to do that because there’s only so much movie you could tell in 85 minutes.”

The update comes as the film continues to shatter records. Since its premiere on 20 June, KPop Demon Hunters has amassed 236 million views worldwide, surpassing 2021’s Red Notice to claim the title of Netflix’s all-time Most Popular English Film. It now sits at the top of the streamer’s rankings, ahead of Carry On, Don’t Look Up and The Adam Project.

The success has also extended to the big screen. A sing-along version of the animated feature was released in US cinemas, where it topped the box office with an estimated $19.2 million opening weekend, according to Deadline.

The film follows Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong) and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), members of the K-pop girl group Huntr/x. Away from their chart-topping careers, the trio secretly come from an ancient lineage of demon slayers. When their biggest adversary (Lee Byung-hun) forms a rival K-pop boy band with sinister plans to steal the souls of their fans, the friends are forced to fight back while also protecting their bond.

Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the film is based on a story conceived by Kang.
