Inspired by James Whale’s 1935 classic Bride of Frankenstein and Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s highly anticipated film The Bride is set for release on 6 March 2026.

The film stars Jessie Buckley in the titular role, with Christian Bale portraying Frankenstein’s monster. The cast also includes Penélope Cruz as Myrna, alongside Annette Bening, Peter Sarsgaard, Julianne Hough and Jake Gyllenhaal, according to Variety.

An official synopsis describes the story: “A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aid of a Dr Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police and a wild and radical social movement.”

In April 2024, Gyllenhaal revealed the first look at The Bride, including a striking camera test of Bale in full Frankenstein makeup.

The production features an accomplished creative team, including Joker cinematographer Lawrence Sher, Cinderella costume designer Sandy Powell, and Elvis production designer Karen Murphy.

The Bride is Gyllenhaal’s second feature as director, following her acclaimed 2021 debut The Lost Daughter, which earned three Academy Award nominations and also starred Buckley and Sarsgaard.
