HYBE’s original story animation Dark Moon: The Blood Altar has quickly emerged as a global transmedia hit following its worldwide launch, gaining strong traction across international streaming platforms and animation communities.
Based on the popular original story webtoon and developed in collaboration with K-pop group ENHYPEN, the vampire-themed animated series premiered on 9 January and has since drawn widespread attention for its immersive storytelling and high production values.
On Crunchyroll, the world’s largest animation streaming platform, Dark Moon: The Blood Altar has earned a 4.8 out of 5 rating, reflecting strong viewer engagement. The series has also performed impressively on MyAnimeList, the world’s largest English-language anime and manga community, debuting at number 10 in both the “Now Watching” and “Trending” categories immediately after the release of its first episode.
Momentum continued with Episode 2, which saw the series climb to number seven on the Trending chart, further cementing its growing popularity within the global animation space. Commenting on the release, a Crunchyroll representative said the platform was eager to bring the series to international audiences.
“Given the global popularity of the Dark Moon: The Blood Altar webtoon, we were excited to present the anime series on Crunchyroll, with subtitles in nine languages and dubbing in eight languages for fans worldwide to enjoy,” the representative said. “We hope fans will continue to tune in to this captivating series.”
The success of the animated adaptation has also driven renewed interest in the original Dark Moon: The Blood Altar webtoon, more than two years after it concluded. Following the anime’s debut, the webtoon rose to number one in the ‘Completed’ category on Webtoon in markets including Japan, Latin America, Indonesia and Germany. It also ranked number two in France and number three in Thailand and North America.
HYBE has acknowledged the growing global engagement with the franchise, noting that new audiences are discovering the Dark Moon universe through animation and exploring it across multiple formats. The company said it plans to continue expanding its original story intellectual property and transmedia content worldwide.
With strong chart performances, international appeal and a rapidly expanding universe, Dark Moon: The Blood Altar is shaping up to be one of HYBE’s most successful original IP projects to date.
