Seven months, one ‘A’ certificate: Vijay’s farewell film finally cleared

After a challenging seven-month journey filled with legal battles, leaked footage, and delayed release dates,

Thalapathy Vijay’s long-anticipated film Jana Nayagan has officially received its ‘A’ (Adults Only) certificate from India’s Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). This marks the final hurdle cleared before the film hits cinemas.

The certificate was granted on Thursday and confirms that the film runs for 183 minutes (just over three hours), as listed on the CBFC’s website.

While the board hasn’t disclosed the full list of cuts, reports indicate that KVN Productions, the film’s makers, have agreed to the necessary changes. Industry insiders are now looking forward to a global theatrical release set for 24 July.

Jana Nayagan was initially planned as a Pongal-season release, slated for 9 January. However, that schedule fell apart when the CBFC raised concerns during a December 2025 screening, stating that some scenes could potentially offend religious sentiments.

Instead of simply granting a certificate, the board referred the film to a revision committee, leading to months of uncertainty for a project that held great significance for its lead actor.

The situation evolved into a legal battle. Initially, a single judge directed the CBFC to give the film a U/A 16+ rating, offering the filmmakers a glimmer of hope. However, a division bench of the High Court reversed that decision on the very day the film was supposed to premiere.

KVN Productions then sought an urgent stay from the Supreme Court but eventually withdrew their case and resubmitted the film to the CBFC’s revision committee for a standard review.

Adding to the turmoil, some portions of the unreleased film—reportedly even significant segments—were illicitly leaked online during this delay.

KVN Productions issued a public appeal asking fans to refrain from watching or sharing pirated material, warning that legal action was underway against those involved. Local reports suggest that more than a crore of viewers may have accessed the leaked version before the official certification was obtained.

For fans of Tamil cinema and the wider South Asian community, Jana Nayagan is more than just another blockbuster release. It’s billed as Vijay’s farewell film before he steps away from acting to focus on his political career—a transition that is already in motion. His political party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), won the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections in May, and Vijay is now serving as the state’s Chief Minister.

What was originally envisioned as a grand cinematic farewell has become the closing chapter of his on-screen career, arriving only after he has already embarked on his political journey.

Directed by H. Vinoth and produced by Venkat K. Narayana under KVN Productions, the film boasts music by Anirudh Ravichander and a strong ensemble cast, including Vijay, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani, and Narain.

With certification now secured, distributors in India and abroad are moving quickly to ensure the film’s success. Canadian exhibitor York Cinemas has already confirmed a 24 July release, welcoming it as a “theatrical celebration” for Vijay’s global fan base.

Given the film’s turbulent path to release, its box office performance will be closely scrutinised, not just for the numbers, but also for what it signifies: the last performance of an actor who has transitioned into a government leader, finally arriving in cinemas nearly seven months after it was intended.
