Alia Bhatt’s upcoming project ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ has run into legal trouble once again. Both the actress and the film’s director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, have been issues summons to attend court in May after a defamation case has been filed against the project.

The case comes from Babu Rawji Shah, who claims to be an adopted child of Gangubai, a brothel owner who Bhatt plays in the film. Alongside, Bhatt and Bhansali, two writers have also been summoned to appear in court.

The film is about the life of the aforementioned Gangubai. The woman was regarded as a “brothel queen” of Kamathipura. The story is taken from a chapter of the book ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’, written by Hussain Zaidi.

Shah has previously come forward to claim that the book is defamatory. Before production of the film began, Shah filed a civil suit seeking to prevent further publication of the book and to stop promotion of the file. The case was dismissed on the basis of legal limitations – the book was printed in 2011 and so it was found that Shah’s case was too late.

The film is currently set to release July 30 2020. Recently, the teaser for the film went viral and many fans were looking forward to seeing Bhatt’s portrayal of this gritty and edgy character. You can check out the teaser for ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ below.
