Anshuman Jha and Devashish Makhija reveal their most ambitious crime noir yet

0

Award-winning filmmaker Devashish Makhija and actor Anshuman Jha have teamed up for a dizzy, high-tension, yet-untitled crime-noir thriller.

Known for working on films such as “Joram”, “Bhonsle” and “Ajji”, Makhija is set to bring audiences a gripping genre piece that pushes the boundaries of genre, character, and moral tension.

Makhija said: “I hope for this film to be the one I will be remembered by when I die. I’ve been following Anshuman’s journey for years. There is a stillness and an intensity in him that is rare and feels right for this film we will make together.”

“The character demands restraint, chaos, fragility and power, and I believe Anshuman can bring all of that, sometimes all at once. I’m looking forward to building this world with him.”

Anshuman’s filmography includes Love Sex Aur Dhokha, Chauranga, Lakadbaggha and No Fathers in Kashmir.

Echoing the sentiment, Anshuman added: “Honestly – I haven’t been this excited for a script since LSD. So 15 years in the coming. Devashish is one of the most fearless and original storytellers we have.”

“His cinema is not just watched, it is experienced. To collaborate with him is both a privilege and a challenge – one I’ve been craving for. This script shook me, and that’s always the sign to say yes.”

The film is structured as an Indo–German–French co-production, and the filmmaker and the actor were in Goa closing conversations on the structural gambit of the film. India’s First Ray Films will be backing this venture as the Indian Production Company.

Anshuman’s latest release includes his maiden directorial Lord Curzon Ki Haveli.

Shot entirely on a single lens, the film also stars Rasika Dugal, Arjun Mathur, Tanmay Dhanania, and Paresh Pahuja in lead roles.

Shot in the UK, the Hitchcockian chamber drama with an edgy, international appeal, as it blends suspense, wit, and biting commentary about identity within the confines of a mysterious evening, was stuck with the Indian censors for over 6 months, as per a statement.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui reveals why returning as Jatil Yadav feels like coming home

Nawazuddin Siddiqui returns as Jatil Yadav in “Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders,” premiering at IFFI before Netflix release. The thriller explores mass murder and moral dilemmas.

The upcoming crime thriller “Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders” is all set to have its world premiere at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. The lead actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui says returning as Jatil Yadav feels like revisiting a part of myself that never left.

Nawazuddin said: “Returning as Jatil Yadav feels like revisiting a part of myself that never left. This film takes him to places he’s never been, emotionally and morally. To see it premiere at IFFI before it reaches audiences worldwide on Netflix is truly special.”

The film will gear up for its global release on Netflix on 19 December.

Set in Kanpur, the story begins when the affluent and well-known Bansal family from the heart of Uttar Pradesh is found brutally murdered in their mansion. Jatil Yadav is drawn into a web of power, deception, blind faith, and long-buried secrets, where every suspect hides a motive and every revelation peels back another layer of darkness.

Directed by Honey Trehan and written by Smita Singh, the film returns to the universe first introduced in Raat Akeli Hai is produced by RSVP and MacGuffin Pictures, the film boasts a powerful ensemble featuring Radhika Apte, Chitrangda Singh, Deepti Naval, Rajat Kapoor, Revathy, Ila Arun, Sanjay Kapoor, and Akhilendra Mishra.

Director Honey Trehan said: “With Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders, we’ve gone deeper into the world we built with Raat Akeli Hai. This film explores the price of truth and the corruption of conscience, with the stakes higher than ever as Jatil now has to unravel a mass murder.

Working with Netflix again allowed us to tell this story with complete honesty and scale, delivering a thriller that grips you emotionally as much as it shocks you.”

Speaking about the IFFI premiere, Trehan added, “IFFI has always been a space that celebrates authentic storytelling, and it’s an honour for our film to have its first screening here. This story is darker, more introspective, and far more personal, it’s an edge-of-the-seat whodunit, about battling mysticism and influence to uncover the truth.”

With Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders, Trehan said they wanted to take the world we built earlier and push it into a “deeper emotional terrain, where deceit, silence, and power collide in unexpected ways.”

Ruchikaa Kapoor Sheikh, Director, Original Films, Netflix India, said, “Raat Akeli Hai, The Bansal Murders is a distinct blend of suspense and emotion that stirs something primal. Honey Trehan, who made a striking directorial debut with the first in this franchise, returns to raise the stakes with a mystery that is more ambitious in scale, layered in character and grounded in emotional truth.”

“Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders” will release on Netflix on 19 December.

Nicole Kidman reveals how one lucky break can change your life forever

0

Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman has talked about what she particularly loves about the movie business.

During a conversation with Ariana Grande for Interview magazine, Kidman said: “There are so many people that want to do it and are insanely talented, and just don’t get the lucky break.”

“But I think what’s fantastic about our industry is that, actually, there is that chance. We’re not in business or something, where you have to keep working your way up. Sometimes that lucky break can just fall from the heavens and your whole life changes.

She added: “Maybe you’ve been auditioning for 20 years, and then you get that role. It’s like you’re always on the precipice of everything changing. That’s what’s so wonderful about being an actor or a singer or an artist.”

“It could be just around the corner, that big break. And I’ve seen it happen for so many people, close friends of mine, later in life, too.”

Kidman doesn’t like imposing herself and her ideas on other people, femalefirst.co.uk.

However, Kidman had previously shared that she’s happy to share her personal experiences with anyone who wants her advice.

She told Harper’s Bazaar: “I’m not big on telling people what to do, but I’m more than happy to share. Then, people can take tidbits, because we all know you tell somebody to do something, and they’re going to do what they want to do anyway. That’s true, right? So it’s more about sharing your own experiences, saying this is what I’ve learned, take from it what you will.”

Kidman has also come to embrace and appreciate certain features that she used to dislike about herself.

Asked if she’s come to appreciate aspects of her appearance that she used to dislike, Kidman said: “My fair skin. I used to hate it. It’s still not my favourite thing, but I appreciate it because it’s very good on film, so I use it that way.

“My height (is another thing I’ve learned to appreciate). I’m lucky to be tall and I have so much leeway with what I eat because there’s so many more places for it to go!”

Bollywood’s makeup battle: How Namrata Soni fought threats and sexism

0

Celebrated makeup and hair artist Namrata Soni opened up on the challenges and resistance that she faced while working her way into the industry that was once dominated by men.

Reflecting on her journey, Namrata, who has worked with prominent actors like Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and Karan Johar and created red carpet looks for Sonam Kapoor and Rani Mukerji among others, shared how she received major support from many celebrities, who believed in her talent.

Speaking to ANI, Namrata Soni recalled encountering bias and hostility in her early years, stating, “I must have been maybe the second female makeup artist in the industry. It was dominated by men. And it was very scary. It was a makeup dada and a hair didi. I would be on set, and the union would turn up. The cine union would turn up. They would come and harass the producers and fine them for hiring a woman makeup artist. They would expect us to hide in vanity vans because they didn’t want us to be on set. My mother would get threatening phone calls on the landline, like voicemails that if your daughter doesn’t stop working, we’re going to cut off her hands when she’s coming back from Film City.”

She recalled fighting a legal battle in the Supreme Court for women makeup artists, further adding how one of the actors stood up for her.

“It was this amazing male actor whom I absolutely love. He called the union, asked me to keep quiet, and just hear them out. It was the men and the women. So the hairdressers and the makeup artists who had come from the union were so angry at me. They were like, ‘If I’m a hairdresser, my daughter becomes a hairdresser. If I have a son, my son will become a makeup artist'”, Namrata said, further adding how she had the opportunity to work alongside stars like Sonam Kapoor, Karan Johar, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Farah Khan, Sameera Reddy, and Preity Zinta, who were very supportive of women working with women.

She also shared a vivid anecdote from the shooting of ‘Om Shanti Om’, recalling how director Farah Khan intervened firmly when someone attempted to replace her.

“The closest I got to doing was ageing makeup in ‘Om Shanti Om’, which I loved as I love Farah. She is one of the only women in my career who supported me right from the beginning as a woman makeup artist. Farah was like ‘Can anybody do what she’s doing for Om Shanti Om? If they can, I won’t take her, and that support meant the world because it really opened up a lot of doors for women in the industry,” Namrata shared.

In a career spanning over two decades, Namrata Soni, who started working in the early 2000s, has truly established herself as one of the leading makeup artists, redefining beauty standards in Bollywood.

She received various accolades for her work, including the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Namrata also won the IIFA award for her ageing make-up in Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Om Shanti Om’.

Actor Simu Liu, who was seen in Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, ” has called out the Hollywood industry for the lack of visibility of Asian actors in cinema.

The star shared his thoughts on the lack of representation of his community on a post on social media.

“Put some asians in literally anything right now. the amount of backslide in our representation onscreen is …. appalling,” Liu shared on Threads. “Studios think we’re risky.”

Liu shared his view on the industry after reading a post calling for more Asian men to be cast in romantic lead roles, reports deadline.com.

The actor pointed to titles like Minari, Farewell, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Crazy Rich Asians and his own Marvel movie as examples of films that did well in the box office.

“Every single one a financial success (sic),” Liu added.

“No asian actor has ever lost a studio even close to 100 million dollars but a white dude will lose 200 million TWICE and roll right into the next tentpole lead. we’re fighting a deeply prejudiced system. and most days….(sic)”

This is not the first time Liu has called out the lack of representation of Asian actors in Hollywood.

In 2023, he replied to an article that noted he was getting “the bulk of Asian make roles.”

Liu replied to the Facebook post saying, “Way to attempt to put us against one another. What ‘bulk’ of roles are you referring to? Are there movies I’m in that I’m not aware of? Do you really think that there is a quota of ‘Asian male roles’ that is a zero sum game?”

“Everything I have taken post Shang-Chi was not written in Asian. We’ve been able to reshape stories to get more representation onscreen. Get your facts straight.”

Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson is set to step into the spooky and haunted world of ‘The Exorcist’, taking the celebrated franchise further with the next instalment.

According to Deadline, Scarlett Johansson will feature in the upcoming instalment of the iconic horror series from writer-director Mike Flanagan.

Speaking about her casting, Flanagan shared, “Scarlett is a brilliant actress whose captivating performances always feel grounded and real, from genre films to summer blockbusters, and I couldn’t be happier to have her join this Exorcist film,” as quoted by Deadline.

With Johansson’s casting, Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, the studio known for horror, has shifted its focus to reviving the franchise.

The studio’s last release, 2023’s ‘The Exorcist: Believer’, underperformed at the box office and collected only USD 65.5 million in the US and USD 136.2 million globally. The makers have lately been engaged in meetings with top-tier talents, finally settling down with Johansson, who also helped relaunch the Jurassic World franchise with ‘Rebirth’.

According to the report, the scheduling for the next ‘Exorcist’ will be planned in coordination with other upcoming projects.

Lupita Nyong’o reveals shocking post-oscar offers: More slave roles

0

Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o, who first broke out with her Academy Award-winning performance in 12 Years a Slave, recalled how her post-Oscars journey did not bring about an array of offers, but rather got roles that offered more of the same.

“It really did set the paces for everything I’ve done since. But you know what’s interesting is that, after I won that Academy Award, you’d think, ‘Oh, I’m gonna get lead roles here and there.’ Instead, it was, ‘Oh, Lupita, we’d like you to play another movie where you’re a slave, but this time you’re on a slave ship’,” Nyong’o said.

“Those are the kind of offers I was getting in the months after winning my Academy Award,” she told Grammy-winning musician Angélique Kidjo on CNN Inside Africa interview, reports deadline.com.

The actress called it “a very tender time,” saying she had to ignore headlines that extrapolated on her Hollywood trajectory.

“There were thinkpieces about: ‘Is this the beginning and end of this dark-skinned Black African woman’s career?’ I had to deafen myself to all those pontificators because, at the end of the day, I’m not a theory; I’m an actual person.”

Nyong’o, who was born to Kenyan parents, added that she hopes to broaden the scope of African storytelling in the entertainment industry.

“I like to be a joyful warrior for changing the paradigms of what it means to be African,” she explained, “and if that means that I work one job less a year to ensure that I’m not perpetuating the stereotypes that are expected of people from my continent, then let me do that.”

Nyong’o was most recently in The Wild Robot and A Quiet Place: Day One. The star will next be seen in Lunik Heist.
