Khloe Kardashians has reportedly ended her eight month romance with rapper French Montana.

The couple had supposedly got together after Khloe and husband Lamar Odom got divorced earlier this year. However she has now taken a step back from French Montana and the couple were also believed to have been on a break.

Insiders claimed that it grated on her that Montana became so dependent on her and she didn’t like that things became “Too heavy” too fast.

Montana and Khloe were beginning to get cosy with one another as they posted pictures together on Instagram. He also began to refer to Khloe as “his Koko”, and believed she is a real cool down to earth person.

We will just have to wait and see whether Khloe decides to ride things solo for a while.

“Daawat-e-Ishq is a celebration of Love and Food” Says Parineeti Chopra

By Aalia Khan

Gastronomic love stories are a rarity in Bollywood and Daawat-e-Ishq is one of those rare films on the subject, with the film’s lead actress, Parineeti Chopra, describing it as a full on celebration of food and love. Praising the plot, she says, “Though food plays an important part in Daawat-e-Ishq, it is at the end of the day a love story. Daawat-e-Ishq is a celebration of love and food, love for food, love over food.”

She explains how food is not normally a main focus in Indian films, but Daawat-e-ishq has managed to combine food and love to create a great story, “It all happens in good time. We can’t have films about food just for the heck of it. There has to be a proper story to tell because it stretches to a two-and-a-half-hour of playing time. Though food plays an important part in Daawat-e-Ishq, it is at the end of the day a love story.”

Asked if she and her fellow cast members ate a lot on set, she tells, “Oh, we were constantly eating. Every other day there was a sequence showing us eating and the scene would go on the entire day, so you can imagine. We ended up eating all the time.”

Daawat-e-Ishq being the actress’s second film with director Habib Faisal she explains that she felt extremely comfortable on set, “I think we have begun to understand one another to the point where we understand one another implicitly. I am very proud to be working with Habib Sir again.”

as33 kim kardashiens leather faux...need I say moreKim Kardashian has been extremely vocal lately about her plans of a second baby.

Kim and Kanye West already have a baby girl named North West, and Kim expressed her desire to give North a sibling on her recent appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres show. “I have so many siblings and I love it. They’re my best friends. I would want that for my kids. So I’m going to do two and see how it is.”

Kim and Kate Middleton were both pregnant with their first child at the same time so could these plans be a result of the news or Kate’s second pregnancy?

MOVIE REVIEW: Million Dollar Arm

0

Million dollar Arm – Out now in cinemas

By Staff Reporter

Million Dollar Arm; the fantasy family film has been receiving rave reviews from celebs and critics alike. The film, which released on the 29 August, has been described as an “Inspiring film” by presenter Tasmin Lucia Khan and a “Bit of a tear-jerker” by actress Laila Rouass.

Starring Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Madhur Mittal (Slumdog Millionaire) and Suraj Sharma (Life of Pi) the film is a true story about struggling US sports agent JB Bernstein (Jon Hamm) who travels to India in a last ditch effort to save his career by finding a young cricketer to turn into a major sports star. With the help of a cantankerous retired talent scout (Alan Arkin), JB sets up a national contest called “The Million Dollar Arm” and discovers Rinku (played by Life of Pi‘s Suraj Sharma) and Dinesh (Slumdog Millionaire’s Madhur Mittal), two 18-year-old boys who have a knack for throwing a fastball.

Hoping to make a quick buck he brings them to LA to train, however the boys, who have never left their rural villages before, struggle as they try to adjust to their new life and cope with the pressure being heaped on them. His livelihood on the line and relationship with the boys at stake, with the help of his friend Brenda (Lake Bell) JB realises that family and friendships are more important than sealing the deal.

As the movie is based around sports and Indian and American culture, the film starts well with the scenes of JB comapring cricket and baseball, where cricket obviously is a hugely popular sport in India and baseball in America.  India is portrayed as chaotic and full of mystics. It’s a country in which the cars never stop honking and all business deals are oiled through back-handers. The big city America in which JB lives is a glossy, superficial place, full of money, car and sex-obsessed narcissists – like JB himself. The Indian characters spend their spare time meditating and burning incense. The Americans go to hedonistic parties to drink and take drugs.

For you Bollywood buffs remember the scene in Yaraana (1981) where Amitabh Bachchan has never been in a lift before, well 23 years later, we see a similar scene in Million Dollar Arm where Rinku and Dinesh first  arrive in the US, and it seems the pair have never been in a lift before.

Some wonderful and light moments of JB being baffled by the Indian culture. Yet, many may still feel the plot to be a little far fetched, despite it actually being based on a true story. There really was a Million Dollar Arm contest set up in India through which two rookies, Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel, were chosen to come to the US to pursue baseball careers.

As a sports movie, the Disney-produced Million Dollar Arm is thoroughly predictable, covering all the usual bases before delivering the heartwarming home run-style finale. The film’s fascination lies in what it reveals about Hollywood’s confused and contradictory attitude towards India. On the whole a simple feel good film. 3/5

JUSTICE FOR KEIGHLEY BOY

New appeal launched to gain justice for Keighley boy

By Aalia Khan

Damian Clough, who was 12 at the time, died in a fire at his home in Kinara Close on 4 April 2009. During that time, two teenagers were charged with Damian’s manslaughter in relation to the blaze, but the case against them subsequently collapsed at court. Damian’s family contacted police last year to ask them to review the case and the police have now launched a new appeal in the hopes of gaining justice for Damian Clough. Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Superintendent Nick Wallen, said “Damian’s family have had to live with the tragic loss of their son every day for more than five years now. They are still deeply upset by his death and as yet have not got the justice they deserve.” The officer urged anyone with information to come forward; “I am again appealing to anyone to come forward with any information they might have which could assist our investigation. We believe that someone, possibly in the local community is likely to know who was responsible for Damian’s manslaughter and I would urge that person to come forward and contact the police.” As five years have passed now, police are hopeful that allegiances might have changed, and the person who holds the vital information could now be in a position to speak. Damian’s father David Clough expressed his sadness of his son’s death, “There is not a day that goes by when we don’t think of Damian and how different things would be for us, had he not been taken from us in such tragic circumstances. I would ask that anyone who knows, or who feels they might know who was responsible for Damian’s death to come forward and tell the police what they know.” Anyone with information is asked to contact the Protective Services (Crime) Department on 101 or Crime stoppers on 0800 555111

We also carried out a Q&A with Manish Dayal to find out what attracted him to the film, about his role and working with the cast:

195_THFJ_D025_03433FD.jpg1.  How did you come to get this role?

I stumbled into the audition by accident and ended up reading for a part in an untitled film, or so I was told. Then I was called back to do several different takes and read multiple scenes and soon after that I got a call from Lasse Hallström wanting to meet with me. He asked me to pick a restaurant in New York so I chose one of my favourite Indian restaurants and we talked for hours about the story and about food as well.

2. What attracted you to the part?

Hassan is a very genuine kind of guy. There’s a humility to him and he’s somewhat naïve as well. It’s a fish out of water story in every sense. Just having the chance to portray this character, a man who begins this incredible journey and along the way is able to change the lives of so many people, was amazing.

3. Did you read the book when you found out you had been cast?

I read the book right away. It fascinated me in so many ways and I wanted to make sure I had an understanding of who these people were and the world they lived in. It was especially great getting to meet Richard Morais because here is this individual who created my character and I was able to ask him anything. He told me how he came to write the story in the first place, where everyone came from, his experiences with people in his life, his time in India and how the combination of all those things resulted in the story he ended up writing.

4.Tell us what the movie is about.

Well, this movie is about so much more than cooking. Cooking is the glue of the story, but the story is really about different people and cultures and how they interact and learn from one another. I mean you have this young Indian immigrant and this posh French restaurateur which is just such a bizarre combination, and I think the way their friendship develops is so powerful to witness.

5.Tell us about your character, Hassan Kadam and his family.

They are a big, loud, boisterous family, and Hassan stands out because he is reserved and more of an observer.

6. How do they end up in France?

The family ends up in a small village in the south of France when their car breaks down. There they discover an old house which would make a perfect restaurant, and which happens to be across the road from a famous French restaurant called Le Saule Pleureur run by Madame Mallory, which ends up posing a huge challenge for them.

 7. Tell us about Hassan’s relationship with Charlotte Le Bon’s character, Marguerite.

Marguerite is a young woman from the village who helps them when their car breaks down, and Hassan is immediately smitten. She is the sous chef in Madame Mallory’s kitchen, and is beautiful, funny, smart and charismatic as well. Plus she knows all about food, which fascinates him. Marguerite has feelings for him, too, but is wary of him at the same time. And once they are both working in the kitchen at Le Saule Pleurer, she begins to view him as her competition.

149_THFJ_D004_00615FD.jpg8.         How was it working with Charlotte Le Bon?

What’s so great about Charlotte is that she has this amazing energy which is almost magnetic. She has a really funny sense of humor which knows no boundaries, and we both have similar sensibilities which made working together really fun and easy.

9. Explain the clash of cultures between Madame Mallory and Papa.

Well, you have these two very different cultures coming together, fighting for the same thing, their restaurant. Their tastes in food are wildly different, and they each feel challenged by the other. Papa feels like he is being chased out of town again, as they were in India and Madame Mallory feels as if her culture and her restaurant’s history are being trampled on by foreign invaders. It is these two perspectives coming together which sets off a feud, and they are both fighting for their culture, their families and everything they represent.

10. Explain how Hassan comes to work for Madame Mallory.

Madame Mallory knows that Hassan has a special gift and thinks he can help her restaurant get another Michelin star. So she offers to school him in the art of traditional French cuisine, which he is eager to learn. But it means leaving his family and the Maison Mumbai behind, so it’s a big step for him.

11. Explain how Hassan ends up in Paris.

When Le Saule Pleureur receives its second star, Hassan is recruited by a Parisian restaurant and moves to Paris. It’s in Paris that he ultimately realizes the things in life that are important to him: his family, Madame Mallory and Marguerite, his first love.

THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY12. How was it working with Helen Mirren?

At first I was intimidated, but I was curious to see how she operated on a set. She’s insanely talented and truly a great actress, but is a really fun person to be around as well. I can totally be myself and make jokes with her. We talked a lot about the story and about what our characters would do in this scene, etc., and we had two very different perspectives, but it was cool to see what the other person was thinking.

13. Tell us about Om Puri and what he brings to the role of Papa.

I’ve always been a fan of Om Puri, so the opportunity to work with him was huge for me. He is a rascal, a peer, a mentor and a really, really loving person. He couldn’t be any better suited to the character he’s playing, and he brings life, charisma, heart and intelligence to everything he says both on camera and off. We were able to spend a lot of time together and laughed whenever we did. He cooked for us every weekend, which really helped create a family environment for us and made our bond on screen that much more believable.

14. How was it working with Lasse Hallström?

Lasse was great to work with. He completely trusts his actors’ instincts and respects just how much actors can bring to the story. He is smart and very perceptive, and whenever he makes a suggestion or changes something it always improves the scene. He’s got a handle on each character and every scene in the film and he always keeps an open dialogue for anything and anyone.

15. How was it working with Juliet Blake?

Juliet Blake is awesome. She was like the den mother on set, taking care of everyone. When I first signed onto the project she called me and we talked for over an hour about the immigrant experience and how it applied to both of us and how we related to the project. And we had many similar conversations on set.

16. Did you have cooking lessons prior to filming?

During pre-production I worked with Indian and French chefs to experience first-hand the differences. And in Paris I worked with an Indian chef so I could see an Indian chef with a French influence, and there really was a French influence in his cooking style.

17.      What is the moral of the story?

The moral of the story is that there’s no place like home, and it is food which ultimately brings Hassan back to the village, his family, Madame Mallory and Marguerite.

More women come forward with sexual harassment allegations against CEO of community centre and of Council for Mosques!

0

By Fatima Patel

BGF0001_24082014_ISS66More women have come forward since allegations of sexual harassment resurfaced after a victim came forward with her story published in Issue 64 of Asian Sunday Newspaper

In a shocking revelation it was reported to Asian Sunday in May 2014 that CEO of both the Council for Mosques (CFM) and Khidmat centre had been sexually harassing female employees and service users of the Khidmat Centre, based at Spencer Road, Bradford.

Asian Sunday previously exclusively revealed that a former female employee based at the Khidmat centre had come forward with allegations of gross misconduct and sexual harassment by Mr Mohammed Saleem Khan, CEO of CFM and Khidmat Centre.

In her statement she states after walking out of her job last year, she was approached by Zulfiqar Karim, (who is believed to be vice president of CFM) in November 2013, as to why she quit her job. She gave Mr Karim all the details of how her life was made a ‘working hell’ by Mr Khan and his close associate at the centre. She was assured and promised by Mr Karim that he would take the matter forward and be in touch with her again.

The former employee has provided copies of text messages sent to her by Mr Khan, asking her to come out for a late night drive, as he turns up outside her house on a late evening. Another text message Mr Khan is seen asking his former employee if she could pass his number to any young girls who are looking for some fun. She replies back scared and worried about losing her job “aren’t you married” to which he replies “Lol I am allowed on the side to hv fun”

Asian Sunday believes that despite informing CFM board members of the allegations and the fact that Mr Karim when informed in November failed to follow up allegations puts serious doubts in the credibility and the impartiality of the board, who refuse to detail their role and responsibilities as members.

Furthermore since the allegation of sexual harassment became public more women have come forward, some of whom had registered complaints with the organisation and police dating as far back as 2009.

It is believed that West Yorkshire Police at the time had told the victim that it was ‘her word’ against the perpetrator and that unless any other evidence came to light the matter would be closed.

Since the shocking allegations have been made public, board members of CFM/Khidmat Centre have released no statement or details of whether they have continued their investigations and whether the perpetrator who the allegations are against is still working at the organisation(s)

Asian Sunday had already raised concerns over the way in which previous investigations had been carried out at the organisation(s) whereby according to witness statements a staff meeting was called which included the presence of the perpetrator and staff were asked in an open meeting that if they had any issues to bring them forward to the board.

Following from this Asian Sunday had suggested an independent investigator who has no links to the staff or service users to be hired to conduct a thorough investigation of the allegations stated. It is not clear on the credibility and neither impartiality of their investigator nor the details of when the investigation is likely to conclude.

Ratna Latchman, Director of Just West Yorkshire after reading about the allegations said

“If the allegations are true I don’t underestimate how difficult it must have been for the victims to come forward, particularly in a tightly-knit community such as Bradford where issues of ‘izzat’ (honour) and ‘bheshti’ (shame)mean that not many Asian women find the courage to expose wrong doing. If the women’s testimony proves to be true there should be no room for victim-blaming by the community and faith leaders – instead they should be showing their support and solidarity with the victims and condemning sexual abuse.

“I am deeply disappointed that the outcome of the investigation around the alleged sexual harassment at the Bradford Council of Mosques has yet to be published. JUST West Yorkshire considers the Council of Mosques as a key project partner and we are concerned about the allegations of a potential cover-up. The Council of Mosques has a unique leadership role in the life of Bradford district – they provide a range of services funded by the public purse and theyrepresent the voice of the Muslim community on matters of faith and important issues such as extremism, stop and search, Islamaphobia etc.

“It is therefore critical that its reputation must be beyond reproach. If there are allegations of wrong doing, I would expect an independent investigation process and complete openness, transparency and accountability in terms of how the Board is dealing with the allegations of sexual impropriety so that we have the confidence to continue working with them as partners.”

Ratna added “We have a number of Muslim female politicians in Bradford and I believe that there is an all-female Labour shortlist in Bradford West and Bradford South. My clear expectation is that elected representatives and those wishing to enter politics are unequivocal in their support for victims of sexual harassment and domestic violence. Unless they challenge their male colleagues and community members to condemn violence against women they do victims a gross disservice.”

Coun Naveeda Ikram of Little Horton Ward, who is also on the executive board of Women’s Aid in Bradford said, “Any allegation of sexual harassment must be noted and taken seriously. There must be zero tolerance on sexual harassment at any work place.

“It takes a lot of courage for any woman to come forward to report any such gross misconduct and above all there could be so much at stake, particularly when articulate and seasoned politician who are male chauvinist as MP George Galloway call a sexual harassment report as “bad sexual etiquette”

During my term as Lord Mayor of Bradford I launched the sexual harassment strategy for girls and women at Bradford Royal Infirmary, guidance for professionals at hospitals. Unfortunately in some communities’ women feel reporting such hideous crime could be a stigma, and women do not receive the right support onset as they feel vulnerable and ridiculed.”

Coun Ikram continues “In the recent article on the CFM’s CEO, I understand an allegation is made and the matter is under investigation, I strongly feel in such instance a thorough investigation should be carried out. All checks and policies should be revised immediately and all staff trained and be aware, all actions must be robust as required.”

Naz Shah, activist and owner of Listers Ladies Gym said “The now highly publicised issues at the Council For Mosques/Khidmat centre visa vi the allegations about the CEO, Mohammad Saleem, and the alleged sexual harassment of women is of particular concern, worry and alarm. An organisation which is meant to lead the way and provide guidance across communities finds itself in the public eye for all the wrong reasons.

Many of the women, as has been reported, have raised concerns which appear to have fallen on deaf ears.

As a former ‘whistle blower’ who lost a high flying career, I am all too familiar with issues it raises. Having directly experienced how intimidation can deter people from whistle blowing I can appreciate why perhaps women haven’t come forward in the past. I was lucky as I had supportive family and friends around me and I won a landmark case against my employer and former managers. However what people don’t know is that in the interim there was anguish and hard work where I had to clear my own name without the support of my union and its lawyers and win the case and the landmark ruling myself.

“Whilst I do not know the situation at the Council For Mosques/Khidmat Centre fully, nor do I know or understand the exact nature or the truth or other wise of the allegations made, I am clear that it is an indictment of the highest order that the CFM/Khidmat Centre has allowed this issue to be brought into the public domain. The Muslims of this city need strong representation and confidence in that representation.

“I commend the women that have taken their stories to the press for being brave and I would urge them to consider making the allegations more formal and contribute to a process of proper inquiry to establish the truth. Also as a committed Muslim woman I urge and remind the leadership of the CFM/Khidmat Centre of their moral responsibility to be a guide to the Muslim community and to up hold high standards of public and private probity.”

Many have also raised concerns about a police investigation. Ratna told the Asian Sunday  “I am concerned that a number of women appear to have come forward with allegations concerning sexual impropriety. If the victims have formally logged the incidents with the police then the police have a legal duty to investigate the allegations.

“Unfortunately I have heard anecdotal evidence from victims of domestic violence over the years that when they have reported sexual abuse or violence to West Yorkshire Police they have not been treated seriously. If we are going to break the wall of silence then we have to give women the confidence to report such crimes. If indeed it emerges that victims’ concerns have not been taken seriously, JUST would encourage them to log their complaint with the Independent Police Complaints’ Commission or they should seek the support of victim support services in the district.” said Ratna

Superintendent Vince Firth, head of Partnerships at Bradford District Police, said:

“We would urge anyone who believes they have been a victim of a sexual offence to report the matter to the police by calling 101.

“West Yorkshire Police has specially trained officers who are dedicated to helping and supporting victims of sexual assaults – from the time that the report is made right through to the conclusion of an investigation.

“Victims of sexual assaults are given anonymity by law. This means that no information which could identify them as the complainant could ever be published.

“Bradford, as with every other policing district in West Yorkshire, also has its own Safeguarding Unit – a team of police officers who will investigate all reports of sexual abuse sensitively and thoroughly with the aim of bringing offenders to justice.”

Coun Ikram further commented that female representation is becoming imperative on any board so that representation is fair and equal . “A member of staff may have been more comfortable in approaching a female board member or staff at leadership level” she said.

“The outcome of the matter will need to transparent and clearly accountable in particular due to the roles of the organisations within the community” she concluded

Asian Sunday will continue to support any victims and will continue to support the investigation. In the first instance any victims should contact the police on 101 or victim support on 0845 30 30 900. Alternatively, you can call us in confidence on 07795 99 6665 or email editor@asiansunday.co.uk
