Britney Spears lawyer has formally asked a judge that Spear’s father be permanently removed from being her conservator. The news follows after a documentary about the pop star was released recently about Spear’s conservatorship, and the hashtag #FreeBritney went viral online.

Britney Spears’ father has had control over all of the singer’s personal affairs since a court-ordered conservatorship was issued in 2008 following the star’s public breakdown.

A conservatorship is a form of personal control over someone deemed to be incapable of looking after one’s self. Whilst the conservatorship was initially ordered to protect Spears in 2008, after 13 years it is one of the longest held conservatorships in American history. It is regularly not intended to last as long, and is usually held until the person has regained control of their own wellbeing. Many believe that Spears’ conservatorship is, at this point, unlawful.

The star has now officially approached a court to appeal the conservatorship. It is generally now believed that Spears has recovered her mental health, as can be seen from her regular appearance in Las Vegas, presenting her own show.
