Original stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are set to reunite for The Mummy 4, with the directing duo behind the recent Scream films, Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, at the helm.
According to Deadline, Universal Pictures is reviving one of its most beloved action-adventure franchises, with Fraser and Weisz in talks to reprise their iconic roles from the studio’s Mummy films of the late 1990s and early 2000s. The screenplay will be penned by David Coggeshall, with long-time franchise producer Sean Daniel returning, joined by William Sherak, James Vanderbilt and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment.
The project marks another collaboration between Radio Silence and Project X, who previously joined forces on the successful Scream reboot series.
Fraser and Weisz first starred together in The Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns (2001), both directed by Stephen Sommers. The films, inspired by Universal’s classic movie monster, grossed over $400 million worldwide and helped catapult Fraser to international fame.
Fraser played Rick O’Connell, a daring American adventurer, while Weisz portrayed Evelyn Carnahan, an English Egyptologist. Across the two films, the pair evolved from unlikely allies to a married couple facing ancient Egyptian curses, including the resurrection of the high priest Imhotep.
The franchise later spawned The Scorpion King (2002), starring Dwayne Johnson, and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), in which Fraser returned without Weisz under the direction of Rob Cohen.
Fraser, who recently won an Academy Award for The Whale, continues his career resurgence with Rental Family, directed by Hikari, set for release on 21 November. Weisz, also an Oscar winner, was last seen in Prime Video’s Dead Ringers and Marvel’s Black Widow.
