Having ventured into the worlds of witches (The Witch), Norse mythology (The Northman), and soon werewolves (Werwulf), Robert Eggers is now preparing to tackle a sequel to Jim Henson’s 1986 cult classic Labyrinth. Known for his haunting visual style and knack for the macabre, Eggers’ attachment to the project promises an intriguing continuation of the magical world first brought to life by Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie.
As reported by Deadline, the sequel — not a remake — will be written by Eggers and Icelandic poet Sjón, his collaborator on The Northman and the upcoming Werwulf. While plot details remain under wraps, the story will revisit the universe of Sarah and Jareth, The Goblin King, whose shadow looms large in the original film’s darkly whimsical tale of sibling rescue through a surreal labyrinth.
Eggers’ ability to combine unsettling atmospheres with an undercurrent of dark humour aligns well with Henson’s original vision. His history of balancing large-scale projects with supernatural and occult themes suggests he’s well-suited to expand Labyrinth’s world. With four Oscar nominations recently earned for his Gothic chiller Nosferatu, Eggers is undoubtedly at the peak of his craft.
Although earlier attempts at a Labyrinth follow-up — including Fede Alvarez’s spin-off and Scott Derrickson’s sequel — fell through, fans now eagerly anticipate Eggers’ interpretation. Whether he delves deeper into the latent darkness of the 1986 film or opts for a lighter tone remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: few directors are as equipped to make a labyrinth as disquieting and mesmerising as Eggers’ promises to be.
With no release date or production schedule announced, it’s likely that Eggers’ Christmas 2026 Werwulf will arrive before his Labyrinth sequel. Until then, fans can prepare for what could be a surreal and unforgettable return to the Goblin King’s domain. Don’t forget your tights and wig — Eggers’ take on “Magic Dance” is bound to be rigorous!
