It has been four years since ‘Justice League’ was released and fans were so outraged by the film that they called for the “Snyder Cut” to be released on Twitter. Many believed that the issues with the film stemmed directly from the directorial switch from Zack Snyder to Joss Whedon mid-way through filming on the project. Soon enough, the hashtag #ReleaseTheSnyderCut took over social media, with many demanding that the film’s original director by given the opportunity to create his “masterpiece” as intended.
Now, the day has finally come where we will all get to see if the film’s faults can entirely be placed at Whedon’s doorstep. Tomorrow, ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ will premiere on Sky Cinema and Now TV, in one of the most revolutionary filmmaking decision that has ever come to fruition under a blockbuster title. But how will this new-fangled release differ from the original? Will Zack Synder completely turn the whole project on its head? Will this re-release be worth the $70 million dollars that Warner Bros. have spent on it? Here’s everything we know about the differences in the project so far…
‘Zac Snyder’s Justice League’ will be nearly twice the length of the original
When most people walked out of the cinema following ‘Justice League’, perhaps the last thing that anyone thought was that the 120 minute film needed an extension. However, it has been confirmed that Snyder’s cut runs up to the four hour mark in an attempt to round out and explain all the events. Snyder has stated previously that the film was designed in four separate parts, and has been bundled up into one long epic, but we are yet to see how defined these sections are going to be.
Jared Leto’s Joker will be making a return
When Jared Leto made his first appearance as the Joker in 2016’s ‘Suicide Squad’ his performance was divisive to say the least. Between stories of his wild and downright weird behaviour on set to his caricatur-ish maniacal characterisation, Leto’s Joker was slammed as one of the worst portrayals of the legendary villian. It was announced, however, that Jared Leto will be back in ‘Zac Snyder’s Justice League’ in a small appearance. Since the last time we saw Leto’s Joker, Joaquin Phoenix has gone on to win a Best Actor Academy Award for his imagination of the Joker so it will be interesting to see how that affects the character, if at all.
The classic DC villain ‘Darkseid’ will feature
When the original ‘Justice League’ released, many were dissapointed that fan-favourite villain Darkseid did not end up in the film after an appearance in the trailer. Instead, the film chose to focus entirely on the villain Steppenwolf. Snyder has confirmed that Darkseid will be featuring in his cut. The film will also see a redesign of Steppenwolf’s character, to make him dark and more intimidating.
Joe Manganiello is returning as Deathstroke
We have been waiting for a proper look at Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke for several years now. The character was supposed to appear in Ben Affleck’s solo Batman film, but since that was shut down, we have yet to see Manganiello in the role (aside from a quick glimpse at the end of the original Justice League). It appears, though, that Snyder shot entirely new footage with Manganiello in order to give the character a bigger role in the film. It is yet to be revealed how the character will play into the story but we hope that we get to see more of Manganiello brutish-looking bad guy.
Both Aquaman and The Flash will have bigger roles to play in the edit
In the first edition of ‘Justice League’, many were disappointed at the almost complete focus on Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman. In exchange for the four hour runtime, it seems that fans will at least be getting far greater contribution from both Aquaman and The Flash. It is expected that Ezra Miller’s Flash will get a greater emotional story arc, whilst Jason Mamoa’s Aquaman will hopefully inject the fun and thrilling energy that we are used to in the ‘Aquaman’ film.
