The BBC has unveiled a thrilling new drama that could fill the void left by the hit series Luther.
Virdee is a six-part series based on the detective novels of British author AA Dhand. Set in the city of Bradford, which is beginning its year as Capital of Culture, the story follows Detective Harry Virdee, a man estranged from his Sikh family after marrying a Muslim woman. The drama offers a gritty portrayal of the city, with both the book and show showcasing the local backdrop.
Staz Nair, known for his roles in Game of Thrones and Rebel Moon, stars in the lead role of Harry Virdee. The BBC hopes Nair’s acting pedigree and brooding good looks will elevate the series to the same level of acclaim as Luther, which was a major success for the network from 2010 to 2019, with Idris Elba in the lead role.
Nair’s on-screen wife, Saima, is portrayed by Aysha Kala, who fans may recognise from Shameless (Channel 4) and Man vs. Bee (Netflix). The cast also includes Vikash Bhai as Virdee’s brother-in-law and Kulvinder Ghir as his father, a familiar face from Goodness Gracious Me, Bend It Like Beckham, and Blinded by the Light.
Early images from the show depict Nair’s character bruised and battered, hinting at plenty of action. The story unfolds against the backdrop of a turf war in Bradford, where police and gangs collide. The murder of a young drug dealer brings Virdee into direct conflict between his professional duties and private life.
Adding to the drama’s cinematic appeal, the BBC has recruited multi-Oscar, Grammy, and BAFTA-winning composer Hans Zimmer—famed for his scores in The Lion King, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Gladiator—to compose the title track, collaborating with local talent on the project.
Staz Nair shared his excitement about the series, saying, “This show leads with vulnerability more than any detective drama I’ve ever seen. It’s a privilege to be bringing AA Dhand’s hope for his city to life.”
AA Dhand, the writer and creator, expressed his pride in the project being set in his hometown of Bradford: “It has been an honour and a privilege to write and produce this series set in my hometown of Bradford.”
Fans are already buzzing about the upcoming show, with social media users praising the books and expressing their excitement. One fan wrote, “AA Dhand’s books are brilliant. Strong narrative—can’t wait!!” Staz’s followers are particularly eager to see if he can step into the role of the great detective, with one commenting, “Can’t wait for this! I’m sure you will be amazing in it Staz.”
