Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, co-stars in It Ends With Us, have found themselves embroiled in a legal dispute, with Lively accusing Baldoni of sexual harassment during the filming of a romantic scene. The actor and director has responded to the allegations by releasing behind-the-scenes footage, claiming it proves that Lively’s accusations are unfounded. However, Lively has vehemently disagreed, describing the footage as “damning” and affirming her position.
The controversy began in December when Lively filed a lawsuit, accusing Baldoni of “inappropriate and unwelcome behaviour,” claiming that he engaged in actions that violated well-established industry protocols for filming intimate scenes. She also alleged that Baldoni initiated unapproved physical contact during the slow-dance scene in a bar, which was not part of the script.
In the footage released by Baldoni’s team, the behind-the-scenes video shows three takes of the scene, with a caption stating that the footage “clearly refutes” Lively’s allegations. According to Baldoni’s camp, the two actors were working within the scope of the scene, maintaining professionalism and mutual respect. However, Lively’s legal team argues that the video contradicts this narrative, pointing to Baldoni’s repeated physical advances, including touching her face, neck, and lips, without consent or discussion beforehand.
The footage captures the pair engaged in a slow dance, with Baldoni allegedly making unsolicited physical contact and improvised dialogue that was not scripted. In her lawsuit, Lively details moments where Baldoni allegedly caressed her neck and whispered compliments unrelated to their characters, claiming this behaviour was outside the boundaries of their professional roles.
Lively’s lawyers argue that her discomfort during the scene was clear, describing her attempts at deflecting his advances through humour as a defence mechanism. “Any woman who has been inappropriately touched in the workplace will recognise Ms Lively’s discomfort,” they asserted.
On the other hand, Baldoni’s team maintains that Lively was “consistently unable to take direction” and broke character throughout the scene. Baldoni claims that when he tried to encourage her to act in line with the scene’s intentions, she responded with jokes and resistance, leading to confusion. The actor stated that the physical contact, including touching and nuzzling, was an improvised part of their character-driven slow dance, and that Lively’s accusations were “fabricated.”
The ongoing legal battle has captivated public attention, with both sides standing firm in their positions. As the case continues to unfold, it highlights the complexities of navigating boundaries and consent in the workplace, particularly in the context of filming intimate scenes. Fans and industry professionals alike are watching closely as the controversy continues to develop.
