Ravenscliffe Film Project to highlight dangers of off-road biking

0

Young people from Ravenscliffe Youth Centre in the Eccleshill area of Bradford are producing a film to highlight the dangers of off-road biking.

off road bikingThe filming will be completed in early December 2014, when young people will take part in their third and final day of filming on location.

All aspects of the film have been made by young people at the centre; from the script writing and planning, to the filming and the acting. The project has been run by Bradford Council in conjunction with Void Arts. Young people chose the issue of off-road biking as it is one that affects young people in their community.

The project has been developed over a number of months.  It began originally during the Anti-social Behaviour Week in July where the prime focus was around off road biking within communities.

The young people who have produced it will gain accreditation for their involvement and will be awarded certificates for taking part.

The film will be showcased in the New Year once the editing and final version is complete. Once complete, it will be available on Youtube and will be used to raise awareness with other youth groups as a way of prompting discussion of this issue.

Nicky Lannen, Senior Youth Worker for Bradford Council, said: “Young people have been involved in every aspect of making this film and have learnt new skills, gained confidence and made friendships along the way. It’s great that they have decided to do something about an issue that affects them which will also be used to help other young people.”

Coun Ralph Berry, Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, said: “I’d like to commend the young people who have taken part in making this film.  It is a positive project where they have taken the initiative and are trying to tackle an aspect of anti-social behaviour that affects them and their local community.”

Coun Imran Hussain, Deputy Leader of Bradford Council, said: “Illegal off-road biking is an activity that can be dangerous and which can cause serious nuisance to communities. It’s great news that young people are raising awareness of the problem amongst their peers.”

Fire-fighters strike continues

0

Fire-fighters in England have announced that a further 24 hour Asos (action short of a strike) will take place from 09.00 on Tuesday 9 December and Wednesday 10 December. This follows the government’s decision to commence the Parliamentary procedure to implement regulations for an unfair, unaffordable and unworkable pension scheme.

firefighters1After almost three years of discussions fire-fighters still face a stark choice of either being sacked or a severely reduced pension if they fail fitness tests as a result of naturally declining fitness through age.

The evidence presented by the Fire Brigades Union has created considerable political opposition to proposals for fire-fighter pensions – even from within the Westminster coalition. The FBU has gathered cross party support from MPs in Westminster who have signed an Early Day Motion (EDM 454) opposing the draft regulations.

The EDM is the procedural mechanism by which the government proposals can be challenged at this stage. This support for fire-fighters includes a number of Liberal Democrats.

Despite this the government have made no attempts to address the concerns within Parliament and are still pressing ahead with forcing through the regulations. They have so far refused to hold a full debate on the issue despite widespread concern among MPs.

Matt Wrack, FBU general secretary, said: “Fire-fighters are asking the Westminster government to immediately open genuine negotiations to resolve this dispute. They should also hold a House of Commons debate to fully scrutinise the legislation and there should be a parliamentary vote on the regulations.

“We need to be clear. We are not going to give up or go away. Fire-fighters will fight for however long it takes to secure a fair pensions deal – this dispute will not end as long as the regulations remain unchanged.”

Fire-fighters in Northern Ireland have lifted their trade dispute as the result of a revised and improved offer with a lower pension age.

Fire-fighters in Scotland and Wales will be taking other forms of industrial action but will also not be on strike as a result of genuine negotiations have delivered changes to the proposals facing fire-fighters.

Wrack said: “It is sickening that the only part of the UK where the fire minister refuses to engage in genuine negotiations is England. We cannot accept that fire-fighters in England will be penalised simply because the Westminster government refuses to consider the evidence or even read its own reports on the risks to fire-fighter fitness related to aging. We have won the argument on this issue for the past three years. We face a government which refuses to negotiate or even to listen to reason. Therefore this fight will carry on.”

Gauhar Khan slapped for wearing ‘inappropriate dress’

Actress, reality star and host Gauhar Khan’s career has been on a successful high; from appearing in movies such as ishqzaade and Rocket Singh, to winning Bigg Boss season 7 and going on to host singing competition India’s Raw Star. Just as things couldn’t get any better, Khan got into a shocking incident which left her speechless on Sunday.

v2-Gauhar-Khan-YoUTubeKhan was slapped by a member of the audience at the India’s Raw Star grand final shooting. Reports have said that “A preliminary probe has revealed that someone from the audience started teasing Khan to which she protested. An argument ensued between Gauhar and the man who was teasing her. Things turned ugly when the man suddenly slapped the actor.”

The man was believed to have been overpowered by security immediately after the incident and arrested on the spot. Police have registered a case of assaulting a woman against Khan’s attacker.

The reason behind the attack is said to be because the man stated “Being a Muslim woman, she should not have worn such a short dress.”

In a video, which has gone viral, from the sets of India’s Raw Star final Gauhar Khan is seen to be visibly shocked and astonished as she holds her hand up to her cheek. She is then heard screaming shouting at somebody to “Leave him.”

Khan did put on a brave face and return to the shooting of the show after the incident took place.

“The accused was produced in the court on Monday,” said assistant police inspector Sanjay Shinde at the Aarey Sub Police Station, without giving further details.

“Since it is a matter associated with Bollywood, a senior officer is also following the progress of the probe,” he added.

gauhar khanGauhar took to twitter today to speak up about the attack, “I thank all my fans…loved ones n imp voices of personalities tat hav supported me in dis traumatic time..May almighty bless us all.”

The elite of Bollywood have also been tweeting in support of Gauhar:

Actor Farhan Akhtar – “Dearest natural selection, please help us out-evolve morons like the one who slapped Gauhar Khan. Sincerely…”

Actress Alia Bhatt – “What happened with @GAUAHAR_KHAN is APPALLING !!!!!Lots of love and power to her for being the strong woman that she is!!!! Disgusted….”

Employees become eligible for shared maternity or adoption leave and pay

0

Shared parental leave (SPL) is a new legal right which allows couples to share maternity or adoption leave and pay from 5 April 2015. Couples finding out now that they are expecting a child will be among the first parents eligible to take advantage of these new rights.

splWorkplace experts Acas are advising employers and employees to familiarise themselves with the new shared parental leave rights that come into force yesterday.

A free detailed guide on SPL has been produced by Acas to help prepare employers and employees for the new changes. It includes a step by step guide on how eligible employees can notify their employer on their intention to take leave, and advice for employers on how to deal with SPL requests fairly.

Acas Head of Guidance, Stewart Gee, said: “Our new shared parental leave guide is designed to help employers and employees understand how the new changes will affect them and how to manage leave requests fairly.

“We advise employers and employees to start having early discussions to ensure that they can agree the sort of arrangements which work best for business and working families. We are also running training courses to help employers prepare for the legal changes.”

Under the new system, a pregnant woman will continue to have access to 52 weeks of maternity leave and 39 weeks of pay as she does currently but from 5 April, working families will have the opportunity to share this leave between them.

A key feature of shared parental leave is that it can be taken in several blocks. Eligible parents will be able to make use of a mixture of weeks of work and leave in the first year of their child’s life, returning to work between periods of leave if they wish. A parent with a partner who adopts a child will have the same rights, as will intended parents in surrogacy.

According to estimates from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), there are expected to be around 285,000 working couples who will be eligible to share their leave from April.

Each school will now be able to accommodate 420 pupils across the year groups whereas previously their capacity was for 210.  All staff, pupils and governors at both schools are delighted with the enhancement to the learning environments at their premises.

To celebrate the completion of this major project, which has been staged over a five-year period, there will be an “open” event in which the Lord Mayor of Bradford and the Lady Mayoress will officially open extensions to both buildings.

Councillor Ralph Berry, Executive Member for Children’s Services, was also thrilled with the expansion, “We are delighted that this massive expansion project has enabled more children to go to Brackenhill and Southmere primaries.  We are all aware of the increase in demand for primary school places and expansions such as this are helping pupils and families to attend their local school.”

Home to school travel policy consultation

0

Bradford Council is asking for the public’s views on the travel assistance it provides to school and college students.

A far-reaching consultation opened on 24 November 2014 and runs until 15 February 2015.

school travelThe Council has a duty to provide free travel assistance to school pupils who meet certain criteria and it can provide other assistance at its own discretion.

Travel assistance is also provided when necessary to post-16 students with special educational needs following an assessment of their needs.

The new proposed changes pave the way for a culture change in the way transport assistance is provided and the proposals are made in the spirit of giving individuals greater control over their own lives, to promote healthy living and dignity and to take account of the fact that individual needs can change over time.

There are a number of proposed changes and a few of the proposed changes include:

– using taxis only in exceptional cases and encourage the sharing of taxis

– promote the use of public transport to children with special educational needs or disabilities who travel to mainstream schools

– reduce Post 16 provision so only those on free school meals or with a statement of special educational needs or an Education, Health and Care Plan are eligible, and increase the distance criteria

– revamping the appeals system

The Council is making the consultation as open and thorough as possible because, although it is faced with the need to make significant savings, it is committed to ensuring everyone has the chance to have their say.

Responses will then be shared with Councillors as part of the decision making process and a report submitted to the Council’s Executive for consideration.

Any changes made to the travel policy as a result of the consultation will be implemented no earlier than June 2015.

Councillor Ralph Berry, Executive Member for Children’s Services, said: “The Council is facing unprecedented cuts to its budget and we need to look at how we can make savings while protecting services to the most vulnerable. We are carrying out this thorough consultation so that we listen carefully to people’s views.”

Consultation documents are being sent out by post and email and people are also invited to have their say online <http://www.bradford.gov.uk/bmdc/Consultations/consultation_school_travel-new_applications>.

“You always need to make sure both your financial and personal information is protected from cyber criminals. Police Cut Off Access to Terrorist Tools

0

Restricting the access of terrorists to guns, ammunition and explosives is the primary aim of police activity on day five of National Counter Terrorism Awareness Week.

Terrorists need weapons and equipment to plan and carry out their activities. By increasing awareness about the tools they rely on to operate, the campaign aims to reduce the opportunities terrorists have to gather their supplies and to identify the illegitimate sales, or thefts, of items of concern.

Since October, firearms amnesties have been held across the country, encouraging people to hand in illegally held guns without the risk of prosecution. By significantly reducing the number of weapons on the streets, the amnesties have helped to prevent these weapons from falling into the hands of terrorists and organised criminals.

To disrupt other avenues terrorists may use to access or train with firearms, officers across the region are today engaging with firearms dealers and shooting clubs. They will encourage people to report any suspicions they may have about the behaviours of other gun owners and users.

Farmers and retailers will also be visited and asked to inform police of any unusual activity relating to fertilisers and chemicals. In addition, officers will provide them with essential advice about how they can safely store and secure any materials which could be used to make explosives.

Nationally agreed security standards and legislative changes help to reinforce these messages. Under new EU legislation, some chemicals can no longer be purchased without a permit. Sellers of them are also obliged to report suspicious transactions to police.

Head of the North East CTU, Detective Chief Superintendent Ian Wilson said: “Firearms, ammunition and commercial explosives are heavily regulated in the UK. This means terrorists may turn to alternative chemicals and weapons in order to be effective in their aims. It is essential that those who have access to similar materials for genuine purposes know of their potential appeal to terrorists and how to report issues of concern.

“By working with the public, farmers and retailers we want to make it as hard as possible for terrorists to get access to the equipment and materials they need to fulfil their plans.

“Anyone with concerns about suspicious activity or behaviour can contact the Confidential Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321. In the case of an immediate threat, always dial 999.”

Yorkshire woman announced as THE 2014 SPECSAVERS EVERYWOMAN IN RETAIL AMBASSADOR

0

Yorkshire woman Noor Ali, was one of many leading women announced as 2014 Specsavers everywoman in Retail Ambassador. The annual ceremony took place in central London attended by Dame Mary Perkins and several hundred leading business figures representing over 50 retail brands. Mrs Ali , was one of twelve female trailblazers working across a breadth of disciplines and companies – from online enterprises to high street giants – have been selected to be 2014’s Ambassadors and role models for the next generation of women pursuing a career in retail. At a time when in-store retail is thriving, the sector presents a wealth of opportunity.

Noor AliNoor Ali became Morrisons’ first World Foods Manager in 2012, tasked with re-launching the ethnic food range to cater for a more diverse customer base. Making it her goal to thoroughly understand the requirements of the customers, she successfully partnered with 85 suppliers to grow the category from 500 lines to over 1,350. By introducing 850 new SKU (stock keeping units), three new cuisines (African, Far Eastern, Halal) and three new categories (food, bakery, halal meat) she is responsible increasing year-on-year sales by 146%.

Noor is described by peers as a ‘true inspiration’, balancing being a mum alongside a busy role growing a challenging new category. She is a passionate believer in the power of mentoring, and is involved in the Mosaic Network, HRH the Prince of Wales’ youth mentoring programme.  She leads on the Women’s Advocacy Group, mentors young students through the Business Enterprise Challenge competition and was chosen for the Businesswomen of the Year award at the 2011 Asian Women of Achievement Awards. Her commitment and dedication have been recognised internally and externally, with Morrisons’ CEO Dalton Phillips citing her in his speech at the company’s annual conference.

With retailers’ optimism about the industry at its highest since May 2002, everywoman believes there has never been a better time for women wanting dynamic, exciting careers to enter retail. Data from Worldpay UK, the global multi-channel payment processing body that processes over 8.4 billion transactions every year, reveals that 74% of all sales made by UK shoppers took place in-store rather than online. In-store spending is on the up and consumer confidence high.

According to data the UK’s retail sector contributes £321bn to the economy (20% of GDP). With the industry employing 3 million people in the UK, there is great scope for ambitious women. But there is also a challenge – while 60%, 1.8 million, of those employees are female, less than 10% of the industry’s most powerful executives are women. With over 80% of consumer purchasing decisions made by women, retailers are failing to represent their customer base among their senior decision makers. In order to change this, women need to see more role models at a senior level. This is why key partners Santander, Asda, Worldpay UK and the British Retail Consortium – organisations all committed to championing greater gender diversity in business – have got behind this programme.

Noor stage picThe 2014 Ambassadors were unveiled at a prestigious reception and ceremony at the Waldorf Hilton, attended by hundreds of leading luminaries from retail including Holly Tucker MBE, co-founder of notonthehighstreet.com; newly appointed CEO of Hobbs, Meg Lustman; Jacqui Gale, CEO, Crabree & Evelyn; Beth Butterwick, CEO of Bonmarché; and designer Jeff Banks. The ‘Woman of the Year’ award went to Lucy Denton, area manager of WM Morrison who started her career as a 16-year old check-out operator and is the company’s first female area manager, responsible for 20 stores and 4,500 staff and a turnover of £60m.

Maxine Benson MBE, Co-Founder of everywoman comments: “In the last quarter, Britain’s retailers saw the strongest sales in ten years; this is an industry offering great career opportunities. Collectively our twelve Ambassadors demonstrate the vast range of diverse talents the industry requires and the career opportunities available. By becoming Champions for the Retail profession, our Ambassadors will share their passion and drive for the industry, acting as role models who will encourage talented young women looking for a challenging and rewarding career to view retail as a viable and appealing option.

Dame Mary Perkins, founder of Specsavers, continues: “The 2014 Specsavers everywoman in Retail Ambassadors are incredible businesswomen and an inspiration to future generations of women in retail. As a proud supporter and patron of everywoman, I am often asked what makes Specsavers successful. It’s quite simple really – always treat people how you would like to be treated. That applies to employees as well as customers. If you get this right then your business will grow. But never rest on your laurels! At Specsavers we have an ethos of never being satisfied, of having unrelenting drive and passion.”

Dave Hobday, Managing Director Worldpay UK, said: “Every day we work with thousands of women in retail, so we’re delighted to be sponsoring the Specsavers everywoman in Retail Ambassadors and proud to be helping them grow their business. The programme is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate this success and at the same time inspire the next generation of female leaders. An energetic, ever-changing UK High Street creates opportunities for all.”

Helen Dickinson, Director General, BRC adds: “Companies harnessing the power of diversity throughout their business, from the bottom to the top, do better. In a fast changing retail world having the best people to ensure we continue to innovate and offer products and experiences that consumers want and need is vital. So we must continue to do more to leverage all diversity including nurturing our female talent and encouraging women to aim high through programmes such as these”

SAIRAM IYER – ONE MAN. TWO VOICES.

0

Imagine the magical voice of Lata Mangeshkar combined with the velvet tones of Mohammed Rafi – both coming from one singer. Dual vocalist, Sairam Iyer’s captivating solo performances see him effortlessly switch between male and female vocals with incredible skill.

Sairam Iyer 3One of the first dual vocalists from India to reach global popularity, Sairam has performed over 1,500 shows across the world, even performing alongside the guitar legend Carlos Santana and Alice Coltrane, the pianist wife of Sir John Coltrane.

Drawing inspiration from notable Indian cinema playback singers, Sairam began his vocal career recreating the top Bollywood female playback singers of the time. Sairam has since moved into the playback arena for Bollywood films himself and has the unique distinction of being the only male playback who can perform playback for a female actress as well.

Recognising this unusual talent, he was signed to record label BMG Crescendo in India and released a romantic music album aptly named ‘Aisa Bhi Kabhi Hota Hai’ ‘ containing two duets (you don’t need a singing partner when you are Sairam), two female solos and two male solos.

Having learned Hindustani classical vocal music from eminent stalwarts like the late Pandit Ramesh Nadkarni and Pandit Shri Dhruva Ghosh at the Sangeet Mahabharati Institution, Sairam acquired a diploma in Hindustani classical vocal music from the University of Mumbai, training under eminent music directors Shri Kamlakar Bhagwat and Shri Achyut Thakur. Entering his teenage years, Sairam’s voice transitioned into maturity, effectively losing its childlike softness. After several years of devoted retraining and fierce determination, Sairam rediscovered his earlier ability to sing in a female voice, paving the way for an incredible talent of performing male and female duets simultaneously.

Sairam Iyer 4His ability to reproduce on stage, the magical voices of his idols, is undeniably impressive. Sairam can perform classic duets unaccompanied. In amazing solo performances, he can comfortably match the scintillating heights of Asha Bhosle with the unique flamboyance of the late Kishore Kumar. His perfect execution of the subtle nuances of distinguished singers has earned him praise from maestros of the Indian cinema industry, such as Shahrukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Juhi Chawla and Kajol; even impressing global Queen of Pop, Madonna.

For the first time, Sairam will be conducting a UK media tour, discussing his unique assimilation of male and female vocals.
