Bradford wows audiences with spectacular Xmas lights switch on

City Park presented a magnificent show stopping performance over the weekend when thousands gathered to watch the fantastic performers and the Christmas lights being switched on.

IMG_1345On 15 November people gathered around City Park to watch an exquisite aerial show by internationally celebrated Belgian street theatre troupe, Theater Tol, which featured beautiful costumes, breathtaking aerial gymnastics, haunting live music and a stunning 3D projection set, Pedaleando Hacia El Ciel or ‘Pedalling Towards Heaven’ was unforgettable.

Beautiful angels gracefully floated above the crowd while being pedalled into City Park on giant tricycles.  Remaining on their bikes, the acrobats were hoisted over 100ft in to the air and ‘pedalled’ around on a giant rotating mobile. Theater Tol’s glamorous soprano sang a powerful atmospheric soundtrack while suspended below the mobile.

Colourful lighting, fireworks and balloons brought additional visual drama to the show which ended with a sparkling finale. Local choirs were also part of the occasion singing festive songs and Christmas carols.

Bradford’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Mike Gibbons lead a countdown and switched on Bradford’s Christmas illuminations. He said it was a fantastic opportunity for “People to come together and enjoy free entertainment.”

The Bradford lights switch on was a huge success and a great way to begin the festive season.

Top Tips to Keep Your Hair Looking Healthy and Beautiful this Winter

0

The winter months are upon us and the weather is getting colder every day. Now is the time to start thinking about how to protect your hair from the effects of the cold, wet weather. This November, Asgar Saboo, Style Director of the Daniel Galvin Salon and hairstylist to stars including Cindy Crawford, Eva Longoria, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan, has suggested the top tips to maintain healthy hair this winter.

Asgar Saboo, by Javed Mohammed (3)
Asgar Saboo

Here are Saboo’s top tips on healthy hair this winter:

  1. Condition your hair. Cold air or dry heat from indoor heating can cause your hair to lose moisture and become dry and flaky. Treating your hair with a good quality deep-conditioning serum or balm will help to replenish moisture.
  2.  Don’t wash your hair too often. Not washing your hair too often will preserve moisture in the hair and prevent it from becoming coarse and unmanageable. Always dry your hair before leaving the house – not just to avoid getting a cold but also to keep your hair from becoming brittle and dry.
  3. Keep your hair covered.  You can either use a hat or silk scarf to protect it from rain, snow or wind. A sudden change of weather can cause a lot of damage to your hair.
  4. Trim your hair regularly.  A light trim every 6 to 8 weeks will do wonders to prevent split ends.
  5. Use good quality heat defence spray. If you tend to use heat styling tools make sure to apply heat spray or leave-in conditioner to keep your hair hydrated, soft and shiny.

Bhalla, a millionaire, has three sons; Happy (Amrinder Gill), Go-ldy (Harish Verma) and Lucky (Sumeet Sandhu). One day, he happens to meet three sisters; Sirat (Isha Rikhi), Jas (Shruti Sodhi) and Mahek (Dakshita Kumaria) who he thinks are perfect matches for his sons, as their dream men match the profiles of his respective offspring – a cop, a singer and a NRI.

Bhalla proposes the matches of his sons to the girls’ father, who insults him publicly for daring to suggest the alliance, Bhalla being an ex employee of his. A hurt and angry Bhalla tells his sons everything and insists they now marry the girls to avenge the insult. The boys agree, but by making sure the sisters fall in love with them for the individuals they are and not with the fantasy of their dream men. Only then will the boys marry them.

How the boys now make the girls fall in love with them amidst the confusion caused by Hawaldar Harpal Singh (Gurpreet Ghuggi) and Dr. Preeto (Shivani Saini) and how the riotous journey of this romantic comedy reaches an action-packed climax forms the crux of this charming and irresistible story.

A mini bus driver has today been sentenced to six years and eight months for his role in a fatal motorway collision which caused the death of South Elsmall teenager Beth Jones.

James Johnson (64) of Wyke, Bradford was sentenced to six years and eight months for causing death by dangerous driving his role in the tragic incident on April 26 2013 in which a mini bus he was driving was struck by a lorry.

The mini bus had been reduced to a speed of just over 5mph due to a fault when the collision occurred.

The court heard that passengers had informed Johnson they believed there was a problem with the vehicle but he had still continued to drive it.

Sergeant Ann Drury of West Yorkshire Police’s Major Collision Enquiry Team, said: ‘‘The 26th April 2013 will be a date forever etched into memories of the close knit community of South Elmsall and it saw the commencement of a long and intricate investigation.

‘‘James Johnson was employed as a professional driver to take a group of ladies to Liverpool for what should have been a happy and enjoyable weekend. He failed in his duty that day.

He also failed to act when his passengers made him aware that there was a problem with the vehicle.”

Drury went on “The subsequent collision the bus was involved in resulted in the death of Bethany Jones and for many, significant life changing injuries as well as the traumatic memory of that day’s events.

I am pleased the court process has come to an end today with the sentencing of Johnson for his part in a truly appalling incident. Our thoughts remain with Beth’s parents, wider family and all those affected by what happened on the M62 that day.’’

A statement written on behalf of all those affected by the crash, said:

“Today’s court result will never ease the pain and suffering caused to so many by the actions of James Johnson.

“On that day as the ladies got onto James Johnson’s minibus for what was to be the start of a fun packed weekend, nobody could have imagined the devastation that lay ahead.

“The lives of so many have been changed forever more due to the lack of action resulting in the collision.

“The loss of Bethany is deeply felt by not only her loving family Paul, Diane, Amy and Ryan but all those who knew and loved her.

“We now ask that all those involved be allowed to grieve and continue to recover from their injuries in private.’’

Community Hearts awards launches new mascot

0

The City Ward Community Heart awards will be taking place in 2015. The awards have been born as a result of a consultation with the residents of BD7 to find out why they lived in the area.

Residents of the area felt there was a strong sense of community and they considered their neighbours as “Family members”, however they felt that there needed to be a stronger role model whom the youth could look up to, and keep the spirit going as the older generation does.

The new mascot for the City ward community hearts awards 2015 will be introduced this Saturday at Speedball, the community’s sponsor. The larger than life mascot will be present for local school children to take pictures with and they will also gain the opportunity to name the huge walking heart.

Bradford West Area Coordinators office and Exceed Alliance, that represents the local school, got together to design an award scheme that met local peoples aspirations. A working group has been set up and the momentum is growing. Rio Grande, Mahmood’s, Janan, and Speedball have already agreed to sponsor the event with several additional local sponsors already in the pipeline. Fatima Patel, the editor of the Asian Sunday was quick to support the event as a BD7 resident herself and is supporting the panel with her invaluable skills and experience. The event has won funding from Community first, Bradford West Area Committee and Exceed who are keen to celebrate the investment in the ward and the hard work of volunteers.

Cllr Nazam who is a working member of the committee and the city ward Councillor praised the awards, “City ward has so much to offer with some of Bradford’s best known entrepreneurs, sports groups and voluntary organisations, these awards will really showcase the talents and diversity that exists here.”

Nominations will open later this month at www.communityhearts.co.uk and the awards will take place on Friday 20 March at the Rio Grande, with tickets being made available in the New Year. In the mean time watch out for community heart Mascot in BD7 who will be making several appearances in the next few months.

Local Yorkshire women released their inner vogue on the runway in Bradford on Saturday 8 November in order to raise £14,000 for Children’s Heart Surgery Fund, a charity that represents families and patients treated in the Leeds Children’s Heart Unit.

image001The sell-out event was organised by volunteers, as part of the Give a Gift Initiative. The initiative was set up last year by a group of local organisations who recognised the need for the Muslim community to play a wider role within mainstream society. The fashion show was the last of six fundraising events over the year including a 5k charity run and a Zumba marathon, all of which have helped to surpass the £25,000 target set for Children’s Heart Surgery Fund and Martins Hospice.

The night saw over 300 people attend the Aagrah Midpoint Suite, Bradford, for a 4-course meal and an evening of entertainment including a fashion show and an auction in aid of Children’s Heart Surgery Fund and Martins Hospice. Doctors and staff who work with children at the unit also attended to show their support. Local women took to the catwalk, including; the CEO, Sharon Cheng and Jacqui Scott, who has been personally affected by the efforts of Children’s Heart Surgery Fund.

Jacqui, from Heworth, has been closely connected to Children’s Heart Surgery Fund for many years. Cameron, her seven year old son, was born with a congenital heart disease and over the course of his life has undergone many life-saving operations at the Leeds Children’s Heart Unit. image002

One of the organisers, Rifhat Malik said: “We chose Children’s Heart Surgery Fund as one of our charities for the Give a Gift Initiative because it is close to our hearts and carries out such fantastic work in our area. We wanted to show our support for a charity that has affected many people within our community and this is our way of giving something back.”

Rifhat added: “We hope that the money raised will enable Children’s Heart Surgery Fund to continue to purchase revolutionary equipment, provide family support, and continue their great work with children affected by congenital heart disease whilst providing support for their families.”

Sharon Cheng, CEO of Children’s Heart Surgery Fund, said: “We have worked with the Give a Gift Initiative for two years running now. Months of hard work and planning had gone into the event to ensure it was a success, and it paid off. As a charity, we are reliant on fundraising to continue our work and we are so grateful to everyone involved for their incredible efforts.”

British Curry Awards 2014 celebrates ten years of honouring excellence in the UK Curry Industry

0

The UK’s favourite cuisine will once again be celebrated at the milestone, tenth-anniversary of the British Curry Awards on Monday 1st December 2014. The industry at large, foodies, celebrities, MP’s and dignitaries will collectively pay homage to the nation’s finest curry restaurants at one of the most lauded events of the UK hospitality sector, taking place at Battersea Evolution, London.

As well as being a lucrative mainstay of the economy, the industry has embedded itself in the social, cultural and culinary fabric of the UK, with approximately 25million curries being consumed each week. As a result, British Curry Awards, which this year celebrates its tenth anniversary, has become a key fixture on the UK social calendar, celebrating the achievements of the nation’s most popular culinary genre. In speaking previously at British Curry Awards about the gastronomical phenomenon that is the British Curry, Heston Blumenthal commented, “I went to India a few years ago to make a programme about chicken tikka masala. What I found was that dishes from over here that people would perhaps say are not authentic are now being copied over there.”

BCA2013 (1)A pioneer in the UK catering and hospitality sector, British Curry Awards has been lauded as a national institution in its own right – the first and landmark event to celebrate the industry’s achievements. The event is eagerly anticipated annually by the industry and restaurateurs alike, with winning restaurants realising lifetime dreams through being awarded. As Prime Minister David Cameron said at the event last year, “These awards have become a fixture in our national life. They are, as I put it, the Oscars of British Curry. I’d like to say a big thank you to all of you who work in this great industry – 10,000 restaurants up and down our country, three and a half billion pounds worth of turnover, two and half million customers every week. I reckon that is about 31 million chutney trays, 62 million naan breads, 160 million poppadoms. As we say in Westminster, a light lunch!

The nomination process invites members of the public to put forward their favourite Indian eatery for a deserving accolade. This year, a phenomenal 200,000 public nominations have been received via post, app and online, from diners nominating their favourite curry restaurants, with 2,641 restaurants being nominated. It is stated that a curry remains the favoured choice of takeaway across the nation, overtaking stalwarts such as a Chinese or Italian. Its value is reflected by the Best Delivery Restaurant/Takeaway Award, in association with Just Eat, the online takeaway ordering service.

Each year British Curry Awards also presents the Special Recognition Award to an influential culinary personality, with past winners including Atul Kochar, Madhur Jaffrey, Cyrus Todiwala OBE, Anjum Anand, Heston Blumenthal OBE, Shelim Hussain MBE and Mohammed Aslam MBE.

Event Director and Producer, Justine Ali says, “Marking our 10th anniversary, we have some great surprises lined up once again with some household names and great entertainment. It’s going to be a night to remember.”
