Ghap Shap with Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah

By Sunny Malik

Bollywood’s action hero/villain Sonu Sood plays the role of Jag in Happy New Year. He is the explosive expert in Farah Khan’s much waited heist movie.

happy new year (4)

How has it been to interact with the London press for the first time?
It has been great. I love the place and keep coming for holidays. I also shot here a couple of years ago. I always say that London is one place where I love to hang around.  It’s great that we are here for Happy New Year and Slam+ The Tour. I am thoroughly excited.

How did Happy New Year come about for you?
I was pretty lucky as I was filming for Its Entertainment in Bangkok when I found out that Farah is making this film. I called her and she said ‘If you get me the dates, I will get you the role’.  It happened overnight. We worked out the dates and I flew to Dubai from Bangkok for the shoot. I had a great experience.

Did you worry about screen time since many actors are involved in the film?
Not at all. It is a heist movie and all are important roles. There was never any insecurity or double thoughts. You know that you have to do your best and make the film larger than life. Since we are now through with the making, we can say that it is the biggest film to come out of the industry ever.

How are you choosing your films ?
I would say that I am pretty selective about my movies since I have done a lot of South Indian movies too. I take some time selecting my Hindi movies. Happy New Year is a very important film and any film that  sign henceforth will be a tough decision.

vivaanVivaan Shah, son of acclaimed actor Naseerudin Shah, plays the role of Rohan Singh; a juvenile criminal. He is the youngest team member of the film and in the film. Rohan is a hacking genius and speaks in perfectly gibberish whenever he has to converse with a beautiful woman.

How has it been being in London and touring the world with team Happy New Year?
It’s great and been a profound journey. The friendships I have made and the time I have spent with them cannot be described in words. Its an honour and blessing to be a part of the film. We became a family while making the film.

Did you feel that you were the youngest member of the cast?
I did feel that but they tried their best not to let me feel that. That says a lot about them as people. They were very understanding and perceptive. They really made me feel part of the team.

Your father, Naseerudin Shah, is an iconic actor. Do you feel the pressure?
I do feel it but that is a good pressure. The pressure motivates me to do better and go further. It motivates me to make him proud.

Ghap Shap with Abhishek Bachchan

0

Bollywood royalty Abhishek Bachchan sat down with Sunny Malik to talk about the film, posting his praises through director Farah Khan’s Twitter account and wearing tutus in the film.

nandu

How did you manage to hijack your director, Farah Khan’s Twitter account almost every day during the making of the film?
(Laughs) It is actually quite easy. She is very irresponsible with her phone. She just leaves it around. Farah can’t see very well and wears glasses, so when she doesn’t have them around, she keeps her phone really far away and types in her access code. All of us actors know the code and she just keeps leaving her phone all over the place. Also, being the director she is very busy on the set. Hence, it is quite simple for me. The tough part is to get the beautiful images of her so that I can post them (laughs). The funny thing is that she doesn’t realise it for hours and then I get a call in the middle of the night.

How did you get involved with Happy New Year?
Farah first spoke to me about Happy New Year very soon after Om Shanti Om released. We are friends and meet socially and one day she told me that she wants to make a film about the world’s worst dancers and a heist.  She said that she wanted me to be a part of it. I thought that she was joking. Farah has a sense of humour and first I didn’t know what to say. We had discussed the project and then it was put on a back burner. She revived the film and she spoke to me again. It all fell into place from there. I have literally been a part of it from inception and screenplay writing. Farah likes to discuss her work a lot. She used to discuss the plot points and asked for feedback. She kept me very involved in the entire process.

The male actors in the film have worn some really strange costumes for some scenes. How did Farah manage to convince you?
I think that was a very big concern for her, especially the ballet tutus that we wore in the film. I don’t know if it’s a bad thing, but none of the actors ever had an issue. I don’t know about Deepika (smiles). The tutus were the first thing everybody jumped into. Sonu (Sood) was freakishly comfortable in them and took them home as well. That was never an issue. From day one, when everybody signed the film, they knew the space of the film. It is mad and fun.

What are your expectations from the film after Dhoom:3?
I have very high expectations from the film. What I love about Farah is her unabashed love, passion and dedication to masala Hindi cinema. Happy New Year is exactly that. To add to that, it has a wonderful star cast, it is wonderfully mounted and dramatic, funny and emotional. It is a true representation of what Bollywood stands for.

Lucky reader of Asian Sunday wins her dream of meeting the cast of Happy New Year

0

Asian Sunday partnered up with Yash Raj Films recently for one lucky reader to win a dream chance to meet Shahrukh Khan and the main star cast of the upcoming Diwali release Happy New Year.

The Happy New Year team were in London on the 4th and 5th October for their hugely successful concert Slam The Tour.

Prabjhot Kaur a young student studying, was our lucky winner and went along with her mum and sister to meet the mega stars. She shares her experience with us.

When I first got the call that I had won, I couldn’t believe it. The first thought that came into my mind was that I’m meeting the King and Queen of Bollywood, OMG!!!

I am a huge fan of Bollywood and have been an ardent fan of Deepika’s since 2007. It really was a dream come true meeting the stars in person.

Winning mean that I thought I finally had the chance to express all my feelings to the stars, but when I met them I was speechless, more so with Deepika. All I could say to her was ‘I love you’! Initially I was nervous

when I was about to meet the cast ,but as soon I went there I gave Deepika a tight hug and all my nervousness went away.

Deepika was so lovely, she was so down to earth, she was hanging out with everyone like she wasn’t a celebrity and that touched the bottom of my heart. The most special moment was when Deepika gave me a kiss I was overwhelmed.

From all the stars King of Bollywood Shahrukh Khan really impressed me the most, he was so humble.

I would like to thank Asian Sunday for giving me an amazing opportunity. I never had thought I would get a chance to meet the King and Queen of bollywood. Thank you once again you have made my dream come true.

Palestine responds to British parliament motion on recognising Palestinian statehood

0

By Hebron Reporter Rula AlHalaiqa

After hearing on our news channels that the British Parliament were about to vote on an historic motion to recognise Palestinian statehood alongside Israel many of us couldn’t at first believe what we were hearing. Irrespective of the outcome, simply the fact that this debate was taking place was a huge uplift for the people of Palestine. I invited some local Palestinian youth groups along with members of the Palestinian community to share their views with me.

The news of the British Parliament motion was widespread it seems local politicians, journalists and citizens were highly discussing this topic. The majority of them expressed the importance of this vote and its effectiveness at an international level because Britain is considered an important country in the international system.

Although the Balfour Declaration (1917), which in my opinion and of many Palestinians too considers the Palestinians a crime against them, but the fact that there is a true shift in the way people are seeing Palestinians and to realise real change that has occurred at the level of the British people, whereby the British public have come out in huge numbers to campaign against the horrific killing of innocent lives in Gaza.

Regardless of the government’s position post the overwhelming majority (274-12) of voting to recognise Palestinian state, here we welcome the noble action of the politicians who voted in favour for our independence.

For a change we are delighted as this act from the British public has given us hope and positive attention as clearly evident from the reports through the daily news in news agencies and publications on Facebook and other social networking sites, where many people commented on it and was the link between this decision and the community events and demonstrations by the British when exposed to the Gaza war.

Here are the views of other Palestinians.

Taha  abu hussien

Britain is part of the international system, and vote for the recognition of the State of Palestine has many considerations, most notably with regard to the historical injustice perpetrated on the Balfour Declaration, in addition to opening the door to gangs Jewish seizure of Palestine since the Basel Conference until the 1948 war and devote their existence a state of occupation.

Also Britain throughout history and conflict existential were supportive both directly and indirectly to Israel, and thus recognition of Palestine from Britain and other European countries is of great importance, especially in the diplomatic side and the political, which would open the door least, though not with the power to influence and pressure on the occupation through Britain and other countries with the decision to establish the eligibility Palestine statehood.

On the ground confession Britain will not change the scales, but it will leave another window of the Palestinian leadership to be stronger in the criminalisation of the occupation and the imposition of pressure on the Israeli occupation, thus tying them internationally.

Saud Mohanna

 movie director

Britain developed nation culturally and humanly It states that sponsor human rights but did not grant our rights as Palestinians do not ever forget that it is of planted body Israeli Palestine in 1948, and do not forget the Balfour Declaration, which dispersed the Palestinians in all parts of the ground so I hope that you think of British parliamentarians and working to repair the crime they have committed against the Palestinians, and that the vote in favour of Palestine and recognise the rights of the Palestinian people even make amends for their mistakes and will count them this vigil.

Although we as a people, we Palestinians for the British people respect and appreciation.

Sahar  Al zamareh

The British Parliament’s vote in favor of the establishment of the State of Palestine is part of a big right to Britain, which resulted in the occupation of Palestine and the State of the Zionists planted in our country and deprived us of our ancestors and deprived of our freedom and our land and our holy places and exercised maximum means of oppression and racism against us.

Britain should offer a lot to atone for her sin direction of the Palestinians.

Establishment of a state does not have the limits of global incomplete sovereignty without the slightest degree of the elements of the economy, and it requires a lot of effort and more of the bold steps the British government.

Dalal Manasrah

Broadcaster

I think that the British parliament’s vote is a very positive step and proof of a significant change in the international political system, which supports the right of Palestinians to establish their independent state and alleviate the pressure experienced by individuals every day with the occupation.

The international voices escalate to hear the voice of the Palestinian and achieve justice despite his violations carried out by Israel.

Glanced up and said that many analysts said the parliamentary vote is a formality and that the British government supports Israel’s Supreme.  However there is a quantum leap that confirms that the British public is walking towards the Palestinian sense of pulse.

Proof of my words, that there are large groups in British society who have humanitarian values and are trying hard to defend Palestine through journalistic writing or demonstrations or protests, and this is what we witnessed when the whole world has recently signed a war on Gaza.

Must do justice to what is happening now, away from years past that reminds us of the Balfour Declaration, which is the promise of black and fought for the Palestinians.

Mohammad  shahin

A vote of the British Parliament to recognise the state of Palestine, which is not binding for the British government by the British Constitution as well as the recognition of other countries such as Sweden and probably will be the confessions after another from the majority of countries in the world and this serves as the formation of international public opinion compressor for the recognition of Israel and the United States later this State.

And do not forget that all the countries that voted against Palestine is a non-member, you may recognise the state of Palestine on the 1967 borders – but all this has no real value without the consent of America on it, and it is known that it cannot impose a political reality anywhere in the world without resolution of the UN Security Council – and became dramatically clear the administration’s position in the Security Council because it would oppose any move to recognise Palestine where they want it through a bilateral agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.

In short, these moves and confessions may be only means of public opinion pressure on influential countries in the Security Council and especially America, and long experience has taught us that it cannot be achieved anything without the consent of America and therefore Israel.

I think that the American administration will in the near time, pressing both sides to return to negotiations and perhaps with the implementation of some of the facilities of the Israelis to encourage the Palestinian side to negotiate.

Worood Halwani

Dentist

Not with this vote because it does not have a formal and real results and Britain supports Jews for many years.

How to Britain now that are supporting us and previously unknown from our land granted to the occupation

We must take our right as Palestinians ourselves and stability on this earth until we have complete freedom.

But there is a position of a popular British groups deserves recognition and respect.

Dima nimer

Teacher

I think this is a great step and I hope there will be a corporation between Palestine and British

If British , France ,and Sweden accept ,I think there will be more countries will vote

What is Black Seed?

0

By Fatima Patel

Genuine black seed (lat. Nigella sativa) belongs to the plant family Ranunculaceae. Its Arabic name is Habbah al-baraka, meaning “blessed seed.”

A long tradition of use of black seed is by no means coincidence. Black seed already has several thousand year old history of usage as natural medicine and as a cosmetic ingredient. Even in the time of ancient Egypt it was used by Tutankhamen’s doctors for various medical purposes. Apparently they were so convinced in the power of black seed that they even assigned some supernatural powers to it. They were so convinced in its magic features that they decided to put bottle of black seed oil in his sarcophagus. Ancient philosophers and physicians such as Hippocrates and Galen also used black seed for multiple therapeutic purposes. Christian emperor Charlemagne explicitly ordered cultivation of black seed in his empire.
In traditional Oriental medicine, Chinese as well as in Indian ( Ayurveda ), knowledge about black seed and its therapeutic use is known for a millennia .

According to many Islamic scholars the Prophet’s Muhammad saying “The black seed is a cure for every disease except death” refers precisely to black seed ( Nigella sativa) . This has greatly affected the popularity of black seed among Muslims and thus to the expansion of knowledge about it all over the world. It should be noted that knowledge of the beneficial properties of black seed cannot be exclusively “owned” by any culture or religion because black seed has been mentioned and it has its origins in many cultures as well as religions. For instance, it is assumed that the biblical term ” Kecah ” refers precisely to black seed . In ancients times they used to sprinkle bread and cakes with black seed for the purpose of long-term preservation of health and energy. At that time this was a spice used against a variety of health problems such as Inflatable, parasitic infections, breathing difficulties, diarrhea, etc. It was also given to nursing mothers in order to improve lactation (increasing the amount of breast milk).

The cause that many still have not heard anything about this plant probably lies in the fact that in modern times, very little media time is left for natural medicine including black seed. Anyway the black seed is noteworthy, especially for a population that prefers using natural resources for disease treatment as opposed to conventional ones.

Black seed in modern science and medicine

Over the last 20 years hundreds of scientific papers on beneficial influences of black seed have been published. Interestingly, this study confirms many positive qualities of black seed which has been attributed to it for several millennia by traditional medicine. Scientific studies on black seed and its components indicate its:
• antioxidant effects
• antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties
• analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects
• anti-hypertensive (to reduce blood pressure), bile-stimulating and diuretic (water tablets) effects
• anti-allergic effects
• protective effect against oxidative stress caused by harmful radiation
• relaxing effect cramps
• bronchodilator (reduces bronchial muscle tone) effects
• ant diabetic effects and to stabilize insulin
• protective effects on the liver and kidneys
• immune stimulatory and immune-harmonizing effect

Ingredients of black seed (black cumin)
Black seed contains over 200 active ingredients. Proteins (21%), vegetable fats and oils (40%), water (5%), ash (5%) and fiber (8%). Its oil is composed of essential oils and fatty oils, containing at least 60% of polyunsaturated fatty acids, essential for the human body. When it comes to essential oils it s very important to mention a substance called Nigellone Semohiprepinon, which is extremely effective at treating bronchial asthma and whooping cough. Black seed contains approximately 32% of carbohydrate, and 1.5% of saponin, a bitter substance Nigellin and various tannins, many of the essential amino acids and phytosterols but also, lots of vitamins, minerals, etc. According to this rich and varied composition of black seed, it is not surprising that it has a wide range of beneficial effects.

Sultan Cola
sultan colaCola wars have been ongoing for many years. Some have launched and then disappeared into thin air, as popular brands Coke and Pepsi have ruled the market for decades.

However with the constant pressure on trying to drink and eat healthy, health advisors and nutritionists have been constantly warning consumers of the harmful effects of drinks such as Coke and Pepsi. So can there be a healthy equivalent?

Well UK distributors of an Austrian manufactured Cola think they have found a premium healthy equivalent – Sultan Cola.

Comparisons with Coke and Pepsi are inevitable as Sultan Cola has come into the marketplace labelled as a Cola drink, only that’s the problem….it’s nothing like Coke or Pepsi, but has its own distinctive taste.

The UK distributors say the idea of creating a refreshing beverage “Sultan Cola” was created as a synthesis of number of reasons rooted in three sources:

1. Black Seed – a miracle of nature. Members of our team have been engaged for many years in the study of traditional recipes including Black Seed. We are also aware of the results of recent studies of modern scientific medicine, which largely confirmed a wide range of beneficial effects of this plant which is known to the mankind for over 3000 years.
2. The Market of Halal products. There is an obvious gap in the market of halal food products, especially in terms of drinks. Many drinks contain traces of alcohol and substances of animal origin which is for many consumers with strong religious beliefs such as Muslims, Jews …, completely unacceptable. Sultan Cola is certified as halal product which excludes the presence of alcohol in it and it also does not contain any ingredients of animal origin.
3. Disregarding nature and its benefits is the fact that is omnipresent in all aspects of modern life style; therefore our motto is “Every step back to nature is a step towards a healthier future.”

So when healthy Black seed is combined with the addictive taste of Cola does it work?

Well if like me you are a health freak and have tried Black seed oil, you will know that although the health benefits are huge, the taste is grime and not something you will enjoy as a ‘chilling’ out drink. Nevertheless, cola on the other hand is a drink that is not only addictive but easy and pleasant on the taste buds.  So a combination of the two can go either way. You can either like it or hate it.

We at Asian Sunday loved it. Sultan Cola served chilled does have it’s own distinctive yet, refreshing taste. Firstly, it feels guilt free, with the health aspect of the Black seed and secondly it actually tastes nice. Although the first sip takes getting used to if you have been a Coca Cola fan, as the taste is much more strong than Coca Cola, but after the second sip Sultan Cola doesn’t disappoint and sits nicely between the Coke and Pepsi brands.

Sultan Cola is now available are various supermarkets and restaurants and is reasonable priced for a high end premium Cola brand. For more information of stockists visit the facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/premiumsultancola/info.

Online Bank Transfer Gone Wrong?

0

By Shabab Gulfraz

As technology and banking moves more onto the internet, it is little surprise every year tens of millions of pounds goes missing. Now before you all start thinking internet banking must have a flaw, its not the bank but us the individuals that in error send money which ends up not with the person it was intended for.

The issue has become a concern over time because 5 out of 6 of us have tried online or mobile banking, and it is estimated that nearly 60 percent of all transactions will be electronically conducted within the next few year by The British Bankers Association. This means the issue is of real concern considering several billion electronic transactions are made in the UK alone per annum.

Up till now, banks had little choice but to say sorry, it’s your fault for sending the money to the wrong account and this it. You would be hundreds if not thousands of pounds out of pocket because someone too greedy to return your funds knowing they are not entitled to the money would fail to return it to the right full owner.

Now, banks such as HSBC, Nationwide have became the first few of the largest banks in the UK to amend their terms and conditions so that if their customers fail to return monies not belonging to them, then they will claw back the amount disputed from their customers account and place it in a holding account.

For once, I must say the banks need to be applauded for actually taking this step. Why, because they are pro actively protecting the service user.

Any customer who has received a payment in error will be written to, and if they fail to respond, the monies will be taken out of their account. The change means this is the most radical attempt by banks to do the right thing for innocent users who have entered a digit or two wrong, and their money has gone to the wrong person.

So what can you do to avoid paying the wrong person. I would suggest double if not treble check the digits you enter. I would also check with the person receiving the transfer that the details are correct. If you are making a large transfer, then go to the branch, if the cashier makes a mistake its their fault not yours!

It would be interesting to hear from our readers of their experiences if electronic transactions have gone wrong. Please tell us how helpful your bank was, and also if you managed to get the money back.

Chilling out with David Ward at Berries, Bagels and Shakes

0

By Aalia Khan

Normally when I interview politicians we often have serious discussions on policies and topics that are often problematic issues looking for solutions. After a recent visit to Berries & Bagels, a new eaterie in the heart of Barkerend, on Killinghall Road, I wondered what such a hip and stylish cafe appealing to a young market, was doing in what looks like a deprived run down area.

016

Well who best to ask than the current MP for area; David Ward. I invited David for a date, to hang out with the Asian Sunday and the owners of Berries and Bagels.

David arrived promptly for my lunch date, dressed casually smart in light blue jeans, navy jumper and blazer.

031We exchanged hellos and I asked him if he had had lunch to which he replied yes. I said I hope you’ve got a bit of an appetite as Berries food is not only delicious but the portions are of good size too. David got the New York bagel, which consisted of smoked salmon, cream cheese, black olives, avocado, fresh lemon & black pepper, he paired that with a latte. I got a chicken Philadelphia bagel which includes chicken breast, onions, sweet corn, green chillies, coriander, spring onions, tomatoes and Philadelphia cheese. I opted for a Pepsi to go with my bagel.

As we sat down we were greeted by one half of the owner of Berries, Bagels & shakes Zubair. He introduced himself and we all sat down to chat. I allowed Zubair to speak to David about his business, hiring foreign workers, expanding further, and the unique concept as there aren’t many bagel shops around. Soon after Zubair’s partner Liva joined us who is of Latvian origin but lives in the UK.

We all had our food and chatted about various different topics. I then asked David if I could fire away with some of my questions to which he responded “Yes go ahead.” I told him I wanted to keep this as informal as possible and allow it to be a chilled out, late lunch.

032 David told me about the first date he ever went on which was with his wife. She was 14 and he was 15, surprisingly to Zubair, Liva and I David also recalled the exact date and day “We started going out with each other on January 12 1969, it was a Sunday night.” He told me that they walked around the streets and this was the first time they had been together. He then joked “Now I can’t get rid of her.”

Soon Zubair and I began firing away with many questions to David. He was taken aback by some as he has always been used to answering political questions, so questions about his personal life, interests and hobbies left him speechless at times.

When was the last time you had a bagel?

“Months ago, I can’t even remember the last time. I love bread and whatever I’ve got on a plate I’ll turn it into a sandwich.”

029

What is your favourite food?

“Ordinary basic food; I love fry ups, Sunday dinners, roast lunches. My favourite meal is when the family will come round, the grand kids and everyone and we’ll just put lots of stuff on the table.”

Are you a fan of curries?

“I’ll eat them yes. My local is a very small place down in idle and it’s where I go often to have my Indian curries.”

Zubair then asked him which famous person he would like to have dinner with. David struggled with this question as he could not think of an answer “Gosh I’m not used to this” he laughed. He joked with Zubair “Well apart from you, it would be nice once in a while to sit down and have a meal with my wife as we’re like ships in the night just passing each other usually.” David says the best meal for him is to sit down with his two grandchildren and two sons to have a family meal as it is such a rarity.

What’s the best way for you to relax?

“Running, I do a lot of running and I run past here quite regularly. I was a very keen footballer and when I moved here I decided to stop football but I always wanted to keep fit so I started running. I’ve never been more than a week without a run.”

If you could retire anywhere in the world where would it be?

“I would never retire, and if I could live anywhere I’d stay here because I like it here. It’s nice to visit places but if I go anywhere else I always feel like I need to get back.”

What made you come here?

“I came here in 1979 for one year to do the MBA at the university’s management centre on Emm Lane. I came to look at it, had an interview got a place then thought I could stay here for a year.”

Do you like cricket?

“Yeah, I used to play a lot of cricket when I was young; my dad played it a lot so it was a part of my growing up.”

Could you ever see yourself joining another party?

“Never”

Is Nick Clegg a good leader?

“Yeah I think he’s done a good job, he’s a genuine person, he’s bright and I think he’s had the hardest hob in British politics. We are a small party and people keep forgetting this because he’s deputy prime minister, it’s not easy having to make big decisions when you don’t have enough support.”

Zubair then ended with “Who do you support in football,” David replied “I’m a Bradford city season ticket holder, but I’ve also always supported Manchester united.”

David was very supportive of Berries, Bagels and Shakes and believes that “The more interesting things we can have in this area the better it is for the image of the place. And it will help the growth and the development of the area.” He also said he will definitely be returning there and recommends it to others.

018

After we concluded our questions David had to shoot off. I asked Zubair about the business and he told me that the reason why he has opened this deli bar in the deprived area of BD3 is because he was born and bred there and it “Holds sentimental Value.” Liva said the two things they like are bagels and shakes so they decided to do this combination. Zubair also explained that they wanted a place where they could serve people both in the winter and summer as “In the winter people don’t tend to have cold foods” so they formed Berries, Bagels & Shakes.

Well readers I absolutely enjoyed the company and the food. Go visit Berries, Bagels and shakes at 20 Killinghall Road, Bradford.

Ebola Virus: Should We Be Prepared?

By Fatima Patel

Global health authorities are concerned as the world’s worst Ebola epidemic has spread from Guinea, West Africa to North America and Europe.

There is always grave concern with the spread of any disease fortunately though, so far there have been no reports of the deadly virus entering the UK.

Experts say chances are slim, but caution must always be maintained as people are entering in and out of the country, as travel brings with it the potential for the spread of this serious and believed to be fatal disease.

Especially with the movement of people between countries through travel brings with it the potential for the spread of this serious and usually fatal disease. However, we can all rest assured that contingencies are in place to help protect us against contracting the virus.

ebola medical

What is Ebola?

Ebola is a disease of humans and other mammals caused by an ebola virus. Signs and symptoms typically start between two days and

three weeks after contracting the virus, with a fever, sore throat, musclepain and headaches. Then, vomiting, diarrhea  and rash usually follows, along with decreased function of the liver and kidneys. Around this time, infected people may begin to bleed both within the body and externally.

Death, if it occurs, is typically six to sixteen days after symptoms appear and is often due to low blood pressure from fluid loss.

Important things to remember are:

  1. Ebola isn’t airborne, so you can’t get it from people coughing and sneezing.
  2. Almost everyone who has caughtEbola was caring for someone sick withit. So unless you’re doing that you are unlikely to get it.
  3. You’re not infectious unless you are showing symptoms of the disease.
  4. It is likely we will see some cases in the UK but numbers will remain very low
  5. If you have returned from West Africa or an affected country and feel unwell, don’t go to A & E or the GP but call 111 to be assessed over the phone.

Downing Street has announced that screenings will be taking place at airports for passengers travelling from the main Ebola-affected regions in West Africa – Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea – where the death toll has reportedly risen to around 4,500.

They have been in contact with, andonward travel arrangements, as well as possible medical assessment conducted by trained medical personnel. Contingency planning is also under way, including a national exercise to make sure the country is fully prepared.

Aviation Development Director, Tony Hallwood at Leeds Bradford International Airport said, “LBA are not being affected by Ebola at present and we have no additional passenger checks in operation.

“LBA have however now placed information posters in the arrival zones across the airport to inform any passenger returning from West Africa of the Ebola symptoms and what action to take.

“LBA will be monitoring the position with the appropriate regulatory bodies including the Department of Transport and will introduce any further measures as required.”

Although we weren’t able to get a statement from Bradford Teaching Hospital NHS foundation Trust at the ̀ time of going to print it is assuring to see that UK hospitals have a proven track record of dealing with imported infectious diseases and have well developed, well tested NHS systems for managing unusual diseases.

Chief medical officer for England, Dame Sally Davies, says: In line with international ̀ health requirements, exit screening arrangements have already been implemented in the affected countries to ensure any passenger showing signs of Ebola is prevented from leaving the country.”

“Although the risk to the UK remains low, in view of concern about the growing number of cases, it is right to ensure that any potential cases arriving in the UK are identified as quickly as possible. Rapid access to healthcare services by someone infected with Ebola is not only important for their health but also key to reducing the risk of transmission.”

“We remain alert and prepared, should a case be identified here. We have well tested processes in place.”

Review: Cona Cooks for Cameron

0

By Aalia Khan

A snazzy, sophisticated restaurant in the heart of little Germany Bradford was given the prestigious honour of cooking for Prime Minister David Cameron’s annual Eid dinner.

Cona, a restaurant which has only been open for five months, was selected to provide the catering for the prime minister and his 160 Muslim guests. The guest list included government ministers, community and business leaders, charities and public servants from across the UK.

Cona can be described as a bistro style restaurant with its modest setting, halal a la carte menu and cool atmosphere. From the floor to the ceiling the simplistic design shows that the focus is on good food and the simplicity adds value to the ambience of the restaurant.

Word of Cona’s fine dining spread far and wide and reached the ears of civil servants in Downing Street, who were on the lookout for a new and exciting experience for the event.

Co-owners Armi Ahmed and Oman Rana were proud to be the chosen caterers, and spent many days preparing for the event. Ahmed said “We were delighted and honoured to have been chosen by 10 Downing Street to cook our quality halal cuisine for David Cameron and leading Muslims from around the UK, we’re still pinching ourselves about it.

Since we opened, Cona has won plaudits from hundreds of diners and we pulled out all the stops for David Cameron and his guests.”

Rana also shared the same joy “We could not have asked for a better endorsement of Cona than for Mr Cameron and his guests to taste our quality halal cuisine.”

The menu was decided upon by Ahmed and their head chef Gavin Jackson, but must be kept top secret for now.

The Asian Sunday went to review the food at Cona to see how it had become fit for the Prime Minister and his guests.

As we stepped into the restaurant co-owner Ahmed greeted us instantly and showed us to a nice IMG_1071comfy booth. The clean table stood out to me and I quickly managed to settle into my seat. The attention to detail was visible with the chic decor and funky atmosphere. When I looked at the light, at first it seemed like an ordinary table light, however upon closer inspection I saw the intricate design inside it, which showed that a lot of effort was put into the finer details.

Ahmed was extremely helpful in advising us on what would be the best dish according to our taste buds. I opted for the Lobster Ravioli, Samphire as I have always wanted to try lobster, and my father chose the Fillet treacle cured, girolles cep puree, beef croquette sided with new potatoes. We both paired the meals with Cona’s own strawberry drinks.

IMG_1068IMG_1075The food arrived in good time and the initial appearance of my lobster ravioli made my mouth water; the saucy ravioli looked extremely appetising, and as I took my first mouthful I knew I had chosen the correct dish. The ravioli shells were sweet and tender and contained lobster pieces within them. The hint of chilli added to the flavouring of the dish but was just enough not to set my mouth on fire.

FullSizeRender (1)My father also enjoyed his fillet steak. Having been advised that the steak would be cooked medium instead of well done, he was slightly apprehensive, however the look on his face when he took that first bite was a picture. He held a huge smirk on his face and told Ahmed “You were right in telling me to try it medium instead of asking for it to be cooked well done, it just melts in my mouth.”

The attentiveness of the staff and their advice on the dishes showed that they knew exactly what they were talking about. The menu could be slightly confusing for some customers, as they
may not understand what the dishes consist of, but the friendlessness of the staff makes it very easy for customers to be able to ask them questions. The temperature of the restaurant was not appreciated by me as it was rather cold, and I tend to feel cold all the time; however that is something that can always be altered and does not take away from their fabulous food.

I can now understand why Cona were chosen to cook for Mr. Cameron’s Eid dinner as I left Cona feeling just as pleased as Mr. Cameron was believed to be with his choice of food.

Parkinson Lane Community Primary School and Calderdale Music Service in Halifax will take to the world’s most famous stage for the Schools Prom. The Calderdale Massed Ensemble will perform at The Royal Albert Hall in the first of three evenings of the Schools Prom concert series presented by national youth music organisation Music for Youth.

Calderdale were delighted to be chosen to perform following an application process, and nearly 650 children will be taking to the stage on the 10 November.

The school will embark upon a song made famous by the late Qawwali performer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The school’s ambitious project looked at the work of Razia Sultan. They explored themes of equal opportunities, right versus wrong, just against the unjust and what we leave our loved ones when we pass on.

The children have been taught Qawwal “Tumhein Dil lagi” by Shahbaz Hussain and Bobby R.S, established artists in their own rights. This project presents a way of learning and experiencing new music styles to blend and amalgamate the different genres of art.

Bobby RS PianistBobby said “For the majority of the school it wasn’t their first language and it was quite daunting for them as it was a new language and a new musical style. But as soon as we started to teach them the words slowly they sang it so well and it sounds like their first language. It has been truly amazing.”

The schools involved in the project are All Saints CE (VA) J & I School, Holy Trinity P.S CE, Luddenden CE School, Mount Pellon Primary Academy, Parkinson Lane Community Primary School, St Augustine’s CE, St Mary’s Catholic PS, Warley Road PS, Halifax High, The Crossley Heath School, The North Halifax Grammar School.

Rizwana Ahmed, deputy headteacher, acknowledged the hard work undertaken by pupils and staff.  “The staff of the school have really excelled themselves, and having seen the children performing I know the audience of the Royal Albert Hall will not be disappointed.”

Mrs Akhtar Hussain informed that the song depicts a battle with chants being thrown from one party to another. “At intervals the chants are broken by individual performers that made your insides glow with pride.”

All children will wear costumes; an interpretive dance will accompany the 650 strong choir, giving the audience an aural and visual feast whilst inviting them to become a part of the battle of good overcoming wrong.

An audience at the Victoria Theatre enjoyed a sneak preview in July, which was very well received with much of the audience hoping to make the journey to see them perform for a second time at the Royal Albert Hall.

A flash mob was also performed on the 14th of October in the centre of Halifax, in which 650 students came out and sang.
