A Keighley girl has won a competition to design a Christmas card for her local hospital.

Sehrish Shabir, nine, used a drawing of a snowman as her entry, which was chosen as the winner of the festive contest by Airedale Hospital chief executive Bridget Fletcher and chairman Colin Millar.

Sehrish took part in the competition while she was a patient on the children’s ward at the hospital.

Lubna Shabir, Sehrish’s mum, said: “Sehrish is so excited that she won the competition. She is looking forward to spending her prize money on some roller skates.”

The competition took place in October and November and was open to all children attending Airedale Hospital’s Accident and Emergency unit, outpatients department and children’s ward.

Children were asked to draw a festive themed picture to be used as the trust’s electronic Christmas card with the winning entry awarded a £20 voucher as their prize.

Joanne Newman, matron for children’s services at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We decided to run the competition to give children the chance to be more involved with their local hospital, as well as giving them something fun to do whilst they were here.

“We had a huge number of entries, all of which were fantastic; it was definitely tough for the judges to pick a winner. We would like to thank everyone who took part.”

The card will be sent by staff across the trust to colleagues in other health and social care organisations as well as key partners and stakeholders.

FA partnership with Afghan football

The Prime Minister has announced a new partnership between The FA, Premier League and their Afghan counterparts.

The partnership will support the growth and development of Afghan football and the benefits it brings to communities across Afghanistan.

During a trip to meet troops currently serving in Afghanistan, the Prime Minister was accompanied by FA Ambassador and former England international Michael Owen and representatives from the Afghan Football Federation (AFF) and Afghan Premier League (APL).

The delegation witnessed British and ANA troops enjoying a football session together and were told about the incredible impact football has already had in rebuilding communities across Afghanistan.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: “We often think of sport as just about a competition where you are either a winner or a loser but it also has an amazing power to bring people together and unite communities for the benefit of all involved.

“That’s exactly what is happening with football in Afghanistan. The team’s victory in the South Asia Cup captured the imagination of millions and brought together Afghans of all ages, communities and beliefs demonstrating to the rest of the world the spirit of the Afghan people and the potential of this country as a whole.

“I’m proud that we are building on this to broaden our relationship with Afghanistan. This fantastic partnership between English and Afghan football organisations promises to develop Afghan football at every level and demonstrates our steadfast commitment to help build a peaceful and stable Afghanistan not just on the battlefield but on the pitch too. I look forward to seeing this co-operation inspire future generations from the national team to Afghan school girls.”

The new partnership will support all levels of Afghan football, from grassroots, through the Afghan Premier League and up to the Afghan national team. It will also include support for women’s and youth football.

At its heart will be a partnership between The FA, the English Premier League, The Afghan Football Federation (AFF) and the Afghan Premier League (APL).

Together they will work to build Afghan capacity in football administration, training and education for the national and grassroots game.

Ali Aghazada, Secretary General of the Afghan Football Federation, said: “The UK is the mother of football and has some of the most successful teams in the world. This is exactly the sort of support we need to help us achieve our goal of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup. It’s an ambitious goal, but over the last two years our athletes have demonstrated that Afghanistan has what it takes to win.”

A Bradford has welcomed the release of November’s official unemployment statistics regarding his Bradford East constituency.

David Ward, MP for Bradford East, has seen figures continue to fall in recent months and has welcomed the decrease.

He said: “It’s an early Christmas present to know that unemployment is continuing to fall across my constituency and has in the main been falling gradually since the start of the year. We are now seeing a consistent reduction in unemployment.

“However, we should not be pulling on any party hats just yet. My constituency still has the 8th highest unemployment rate in the country so we cannot relax and must keep doing more to promote Bradford jobs and Bradford Businesses. We need to make sure that Bradfordians benefit from new opportunities like the Westfield development. This will create hundreds of jobs for local people, help develop skills in the local area and act as a pull to other business to set up in Bradford.”

The figures show those on Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) falling by 99 people in November, a total of 4,922 people. This is the lowest figure since July 2011 where 4,658 people were claiming the JSA in Bradford East.

The number of claimants is 564 lower than in November 2012 and 99 lower than in November 2013. This represents a rate of 10.1% of the economically active population aged 16 to 64, which is the 8th highest of the 650 UK constituencies. Youth unemployment has also been reduced by 75 people, the lowest figure since June 2011.

The search is on for three new talented writers in the North of England as a project looks to uncover a unique take on Northern culture.

The Verb New Voices opportunity is looking to generate vibrant new writing that will showcased on BBC Radio 3, with a range of other live literature showcases at venues and festivals in the North.

The Verb, headed up by renowned poet Ian McMillan, is BBC Radio 3’s regular Friday night cabaret of the spoken word. The show delivers wordplay, feisty debate about creativity and features a strong-line up of writers and commentators.

Two artists aged 18 to 30 and one artist of any age will work alongside BBC voice coaches and producers as well as experienced talent developers at Arts Council England, funded organisations in the North – New Writing North and ARC in the North East, Contact in the North West and The Writing Squad in Yorkshire, to develop their writing and performance skills.

Poets, spoken word practitioners, fiction writers and artists who use words and sound to create exciting work will be given a generous bursary to write a new eight-minute long piece suitable for broadcast on The Verb programme and a longer piece for performance at live events in the North.

The opportunity also includes a fully funded place on an Arvon residential writing course at Lumb Bank in Yorkshire.
Alison Boyle, Relationship Manager, Literature, at Arts Council England said: “This fantastic opportunity for three artists to pen a new piece for performance in a range of showcases from MediaCity in Salford to ARC in Stockton-on-Tees, is important for many reasons. It has great potential to strengthen live literature across the North by partnering the BBC and Arts Council funded organisations in the three North regions with artists based here who have powerful things to express. We expect to see strong, distinct voices coming through.”

The three selected artists will each receive a bursary of £2,500 with the potential for additional fees from any radio interviews and performances.

The deadline for submissions is 5pm on December 13, 2013. Information about how to apply can be found online( www.newwritingnorth.com/text.html?id=verbnewvoices)

Former Councillor in Drug Scandal

0

Questions have been raised after the arrest of a former Bradford councillor over allegations that he has purchased and used illegal drugs.

Reverend Paul Flowers, who served on Bradford Council from 2002 to 2011, was filmed allegedly buying cocaine and discussing the purchase of other illegal drugs.

The video, which was published by the Mail on Sunday, resulted in Rev Flowers arrest on November 21 and is currently on police bail.

Two men were also arrested as part of the ongoing investigation into allegations of drugs supply offences and have been released on bail.

The men, aged 26 and 34, have been bailed to a date in the New Year while enquiries continue.
It has also been revealed that Rev Flowers quit his position as a Labour councillor after “inappropriate” adult material was found on his Council computer in September 2011. However, the original reason, at the time, was related to work and family pressure.

The Conservative and Liberal Democrats members of the council have now contacted the authority’s chief executive Tony Reeves, demanding an independent investigation.

Bradford West MP George Galloway has also demanded that the Bradford Labour Party “come clean” on who was involved in the “extensive cover-up” of the resignation of the Rev Paul Flowers from the council.

Galloway said: “We know that the then-leader Ian Greenwood was told that pornography had been found on a council laptop in Flowers’ possession and that he colluded in the cover-up. Are we expected to believe that he didn’t consult with senior colleagues like Dave Green and Imran Hussain? Because I don’t. This must have been well known to members of the Labour group and to the chief executive Tony Reeves, who would have been alerted when the material was first found.”

He added: “Now while I can understand, if not condone, a personal motive in not publicly humiliating Flowers, this was all about politics. It wouldn’t just have brought shame and ignominy on Flowers if it had come out, but the affair would have tainted the entire Bradford Labour group. What is absolutely unforgivable is that Greenwood and his chums then put forward this man, with a sordid previous history, as chair of governors for Lidget Green Primary school.

“They failed in their duty to inform the parents and the management of the school, they decided to continue their cover-up and this cannot go unpunished. There needs to be an independent inquiry into the roles and behaviour of those I have named.”
Rev Flowers was also the former chairman of the Co-op Bank, quitting the post in June this year.

It has now emerged that the Co-op is seeking to recover £31,000 from Rev Flowers since he left the £132,000-a-year post.
In a statement, Co-op said: “When Paul Flowers relinquished his responsibilities in June, it was agreed, as per his contractual obligations, that his fees for the rest of his period of office would be paid.

“Following recent revelations, the board stopped all payments with immediate effect and no further payments will be made.”

Bradford councillors quit Respect Party

0

All five Respect councillors in Bradford have officially quit the party after a long dispute with party officials and MP George Galloway.

The dispute arose in August when Councillors Ishtiaq Ahmed, representing Manningham, and Mohammad Shabbir, representing Heaton, were suspended earlier this year for reportedly criticising George Galloway over his comments regarding his participation in the Mayor of London election.

The councillors, which also include Councillor Alyas Karmani, Councillor Ruqayyah Collector  and Councillor Faisal Khan, protested against the decision and have been temporarily acting as independents.

In a statement, Councillor Alyas Karmani, former Leader of the Bradford Respect Party, said: “Over the last two months I have been having discussions with senior Respect party officials to address the legitimate concerns that we have relating to the unwarranted suspension of Respect Councillors Ahmed and Shabbir, the defamatory statements made about the Bradford Respect councillors and a failure to develop transparent operational structures and procedures to enable the party to work effectively in Bradford.  To date our rightful and legitimate request for a full and unconditional retraction of defamatory statements and allegations made against our group of councillors collectively and individually have not been met.

“Regrettably these discussions have failed to find common ground as senior Respect officials have shown a disregard to address our legitimate grievances and we have been unable to resolve our issues of difference.  After much deliberation this has left our group no choice but to fully resign from the Respect party with immediate effect and hence forth we will continue to operate as a group of independent councillors for the remainder of our term.  This decision has not been made lightly and we are saddened that certain ‘gatekeepers’ involved in Bradford Respect appear to have no interest in transparency, accountability and equity.

“I informed Rob Hoveman (parliamentary secretary to George Galloway MP) of this on Thursday 24th October 2013 and following this both Cllrs Ishtiaq Ahmed and Mohammad Shabbir then received an email from Ron Mckay, (acting secretary of Respect Party) that they have been dismissed from the Respect party as of 24th October 2013.  This action only reinforces our view that decisions are made with complete disregard and contempt for any due process and are motivated by self-interest and not in the interest of constituents and the people of Bradford.”

He added: “We find this particularly disturbing given that since being suspended on 13/8/2013 there has been no formal allegation put to them, no description of any processes, no interview and no opportunity for the two councillors to challenge the allegations made against them and there seems to be no collective endorsement for this decision from the Respect National Executive Council.

“I want to assert that as a group we entered into local politics with a view to stand up for Bradfordian’s and therefore we believe we have acted in the best interest of Bradford.  Needless to say we will remain committed to the electorate and will continue to advocate for the citizens of Bradford and work hard for the interests of our constituents and we will continue to represent them in Council on the issues that affect them in the District.”

Since the statement was released, the Respect Party have responded with a statement of their own.

The Respect Party statement read: “It is entirely in character that the five councillors who have resigned from Respect in Bradford did so under cover of darkness, putting out their rambling statement in the middle of the night. Two of them ‘resigned’ having been expelled by the party, a logical impossibility.

“The facts are these. Since George Galloway’s win in Bradford West there has been a concerted effort to damage Respect in the city, some of it illegal, as a forthcoming criminal case will demonstrate. For obvious reasons we cannot comment on this. Two of the five councillors, Ishtiaq Ahmed and Mohammed Shabir, repeatedly briefed against the Respect party and George Galloway, including to members of the press. They were suspended from the party some two months ago, and were expelled yesterday.

“This is not about principal, or policy, but self-interest and a naked attempt by the five councillors and one ally to control the party in Bradford. They proposed a constitution which would have given them absolute power in the party in the city. It came to a head when they proposed installing their ally in what they considered to be a safe seat at the forthcoming May election. These machinations were rejected by the national party. Since then they have continued to act against Respect.

“The five, some of whom have chequered political histories, were elected on the coattails of George Galloway’s historic win in Bradford West. Does anyone seriously doubt that? Their visibility and impact in the council chamber has been virtually non-existent. If they had a shred of principle they would now resign their council seats and stand again in their new colours. Or will they instead continue to draw thousands of pounds of public money until they are removed by the voters?”

With Kimberley Walsh and Dynamo already attending the launch of Asian Sunday London, we are delighted to announce that Indian actress Kareena Kapoor Khan will also be at the House of Commons.

Following the unprecedented success of the now two-year-old Bradford Edition, publishing group I & E Media will be unveiling the London Edition of pioneering media title, Asian Sunday, at the House of Commons on Tuesday, October 29.

The milestone occasion will be witnessed by a high-profile guest list of London and Bradford MPʼs, VIPʼs, dignitaries, celebrities and influencers across the media and business sectors.

Supported by Event Partner British Airways, Asian Sunday Londonʼs official launch will welcome attendees joining to celebrate the theme of the launch event – integration – and bridging the gap in terms of ethnicity, community, business and geography, echoing the ethos of the newspaper.

International celebrities – Kareena Kapoor Khan, Bollywood royalty and A-list Indian actress; Kimberley Walsh, singer-songwriter, model, television presenter, actress and band member of Girls Aloud; and Dynamo, AKA Steven Frayne, Dynamo: Magician Impossible will be honoured by the newspaper and Members of Parliament – for their respective contributions to the global entertainment industry.

Founded by I and E Media Managing Director, Fatima Patel, Asian Sunday newspaper has established itself as a benchmark publication – the UKʼs first free Sunday paper; the first Sunday title across the UK Asian media sector; highlighting news that focuses on South Asians living and working and their lifestyle in the UK and sharing this insight with the wider community by distributing the newspaper free; and the first UK Asian newspaper to be solo-owned by a female.

Fuelled by the success of the Bradford edition in achieving recognition and fostering cross-community relations between the South Asian and wider, local communities, Fatima decided to introduce the newspaper to the Capital, reaching its abundance of diverse communities alongside the local, South Asian community. Asian Sunday London will be delivered to over 20 tube stations across London, in addition to supermarkets such as Tesco, Asda and Morrisons, retailers, businesses and to a further 20,000 door-to-door households. Over 250,000 newspapers will be distributed per month, with a potential readership generated in excess of a million monthly readers. The debut copy of Asian Sunday London will be distributed on November 10, following the House of Commons launch event.

Asian Sunday focuses on community cohesion, sharing news on the South Asian community living, working and their lifestyle in the UK with the wider community, with specific focus on the 3rd and 4th generation experience, in turn engaging a better understanding of the UK South Asian community. Editorial content spans politics, news, lifestyle, arts, culture and entertainment, beyond the stereotypical and encouraging interaction and dialogue with youth audiences also.

Fatima Patel, Managing Director of I & E Media and Managing Editor of Asian Sunday, said: “Launching Asian Sunday London is very close to my heart, both on a personal and professional level. It hopefully will allow me to continue my journey as a female entrepreneur but also, being probably the only female-owned Asian newspaper, will help me promote to the Asian community and the wider community that dreams can become reality – the journey of a Muslim girl from Bradford, now daring to launch a benchmark media title in London. I hope I can make my parents proud that the girl who used to work in their corner shops, helping with the paper rounds now owns a national newspaper.”
