Bhumi Pednekar at World Economic Forum: AI can democratise filmmaking for a better future

Actor and climate activist Bhumi Pednekar has championed the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to democratise filmmaking, arguing that it could help create a better future for all. Speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in Davos, where she was recognised as one of the ‘Young Global Leaders,’ Pednekar highlighted AI’s transformative potential for storytelling, particularly in amplifying marginalised voices.

Pednekar proposed that AI could expand access to educational films, reduce production costs, and address systemic inequalities in the film industry. “As an actor and an advocate for equality, I’m most excited about how AI is going to democratise storytelling,” she said.

Citing her 2017 film Toilet Ek Prem Katha (Toilet: A Love Story) as an example, Pednekar emphasised how cinema can be a catalyst for change. The film, which tackled the issue of open defecation in India, became a vital part of the government’s campaign to eradicate the practice. It was screened across rural areas as an educational tool, contributing to a significant decline in open defecation from 2016 to 2022.

She envisioned AI enhancing the impact of such films by adapting them for global audiences. “Imagine showing the same film, but modified by AI for global audiences, ensuring the message resonates across languages and regions,” she said.

Pednekar expressed her commitment to inclusive storytelling, having chosen roles that challenge conventional beauty standards and spotlight women and LGBTQ+ communities. However, she noted the reluctance of studios to invest in female-centric or queer narratives due to perceived market risks.

“AI can make female-centric films a sustainable business model and help make the industry safer for women and marginalised groups,” she explained. By automating unbiased casting processes and identifying patterns of misconduct, AI could address systemic issues. She also suggested that AI tools could promote equity by determining fair compensation for artists.

Pednekar’s vision aligns with the WEF’s mission of creating a more inclusive and sustainable future. As one of five young global leaders tasked with proposing transformative ideas for 2025, she advocated for advances in AI and visual effects to make storytelling more impactful.

“The integration of technology in filmmaking can not only transform the industry but also build a better future for everyone,” Pednekar stated.

The WEF Annual Meeting, which runs until 24 January, brings together leaders and innovators from around the world to address pressing global challenges.

Saif Ali Khan attack case: Zahan Kapoor provides update; Police to recreate crime scene

Actor Saif Ali Khan is now recovering after undergoing multiple surgeries following a shocking knife attack at his Mumbai residence. The incident occurred during the early hours of Thursday when an intruder broke into his Bandra home with the intent to steal.

Kareena Kapoor’s cousin, Zahan Kapoor, reassured fans of Saif’s safety in an interview with Money Control. “I can’t comment on the incident itself because I don’t think anyone knows the full details yet. What I do know is that he is safe and recovering well. He is completely out of danger, and for that, I am incredibly thankful. It is undoubtedly a shocking event,” said Zahan, who is the grandson of the late Shashi Kapoor.

Rahul Bhat, Zahan’s co-star in the Netflix series Black Warrant, also expressed his concern. “It gives me chills to even think about it. I can only imagine the trauma he must have endured. This incident is both horrible and unimaginable. I pray to God to give him strength and help him recover quickly,” he said.

The attack took place when the intruder, identified as Shariful Islam Shehzad Mohammad Rohilla Amin Fakir, a 30-year-old Bangladeshi man, entered Saif’s apartment by scaling the building’s exterior. Police reports state that Shariful accessed the actor’s flat on the 12th floor through a bathroom window. He was caught by staff members, which escalated into a violent altercation where Saif was stabbed multiple times.

The actor was rushed to Lilavati Hospital at around 3:30 a.m., where a five-hour surgery was performed. Dr Niraj Uttamani, who treated Saif, revealed that a broken part of the knife was lodged near the actor’s spine but was successfully removed.

Shariful was apprehended from Hiranandani Estate in Thane while attempting to flee to his native village in Jhalokati, Bangladesh. He has been remanded in police custody for five days.

The Mumbai police have announced plans to recreate the crime scene at Saif’s residence in the Satguru Sharan building as part of their investigation. The accused will be taken to the location within the remand period to establish the sequence of events.

A case has been registered under sections 311, 312, 331(4), 331(6), and 331(7) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). Investigators have also revealed that Shariful climbed to the 12th floor using a pipe and gained entry via the bathroom.

The 54-year-old actor is currently stable and recuperating from his injuries. Zahan Kapoor and other family members have thanked fans for their prayers and well wishes during this difficult time.

Liam Payne’s father faces £7.8 million defamation lawsuit over alleged false statements

Liam Payne’s father, Geoff Payne, is being sued for £7.8 million in a defamation case filed by Rogelio ‘Roger’ Nores, a close friend of the late singer. Nores claims that he has been unfairly blamed for Payne’s tragic death, which occurred last year in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The former One Direction star died on 16 October after falling from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur Palermo hotel.

Nores, an American businessman, was one of the last people to see Payne alive. Last month, he was charged with manslaughter following allegations that he had “abandoned [Liam] to his luck, knowing that he was incapable of fending for himself and suffered from multiple addictions,” according to Judge Laura Bruniard. Additionally, four hotel staff members were charged in connection with Payne’s death.

However, Nores is now fighting back, accusing Geoff Payne of making “misleading, false, and defamatory” statements to the Buenos Aires police, which he argues led to his arrest and the manslaughter charges. In the lawsuit, filed in Palm Beach, Florida, Nores is seeking more than £7.8 million in damages, with all proceeds directed to Payne’s son, Bear.

The lawsuit demands that Geoff Payne retract and correct his statements. It states, “Defendant Geoff’s false Relevant Contents of the Two Sworn Declarations were and are the proximate cause of the Plaintiff’s injury and damages, including damage to Plaintiff’s reputation.”

Nores claims that Geoff falsely stated to police that he and Kate Cassidy, Payne’s girlfriend, were responsible for Liam’s care. Nores insists that while he was a dear friend to Payne, he was not his caretaker and had no legal obligation to look after him. Furthermore, Nores denies Geoff’s claims that he took Payne to a new psychiatrist in Florida after Dr. Rohaidy resigned, as well as the allegation that he misled the psychiatrist about Payne’s struggles with alcohol and drugs to obtain new prescriptions. Nores vehemently denies these claims, stating that no such psychiatrist existed and calling Geoff’s account “100 percent fiction.”

Geoff also reportedly told police that Liam had been ‘left alone’ and had ‘no phone’, and that he could only be contacted by Nores or Kate Cassidy. Nores refutes this, arguing that Liam was often left alone in Florida, but always had his own phone, except for a brief period when he broke it during an argument with Cassidy.
