Bollywood supremo Akshay Kumar will travel to Birmingham to watch the keenly awaited India-Pakistan ICC Championship match, taking place on Saturday 15 June at Edgbaston Stadium. While Akshay is known to be an ardent cricket lover in real life, even his character Shoaib in the forthcoming film Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobara will be seen as a powerful don who wields the power to influence a cricket match. It is more than a coincidence that the match shown in the film is an India-Pakistan one.

Incidentally, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobara is the only film that has been integrated with this all-important match in the ICC Champions Trophy 2013. Industry sources are expecting huge viewership from cricket-loving fans the world over for this match.

Though it is not likely that he will be seen in the look of his character, at the match.

Confirming the news, Tanuj Garg, CEO-Balaji Motion Pictures said, “As a company known for pushing the envelope on marketing, we will have our Shoaib attending the India-Pakistan match at Edgbaston. City Pays Tribute to Fallen Soldier

Lee Rigby - Bradford Vigil 1

The whole of the United Kingdom was in shock by the horrific actions of two men in the South East London district of Woolwich.

The events on May 22 have not only horrified the nation but caused sadness for many people at the tragic loss of life.

Drummer Lee Rigby, 25, was a father-of-one and served with the 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. Rigby was the victim of a brutal killing by two Muslim men, close to where the soldier was based.

The two men allegedly hacked at Drummer Rigby’s body with a knife and a meat cleaver, after running him over with a Vauxhall Tigra, leaving him defenceless.

The two men, Michael Adebowale and Michael Adebolajo, were both shot by police at the scene and were sent to hospital under armed guard. Michael Adebowale has been released from hospital and has been charged with murder.

In response to the tragic death of Drummer Rigby, a number of Bradford residents began to lay flowers outside City Hall.

The touching response from the people of Bradford resulted in a candlelit vigil being held outside City Hall on May 29, a week after Drummer Rigby’s death.

Residents from Bradford’s diverse population came together to pay tribute to a man who fought for this country.

Despite the wind and rain, making it difficult for candles to be lit, over 50 people came out for a minutes silence and prayer. The vigil was also attended by current and former soldiers from the area.

The event was organised by Caroline Poole and was also dedicated to raise money for the murdered soldier’s two-year-old son Jack.

The collection at the vigil raised around £80 and will put into a bank account in Jack’s name to be passed on to the The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, who will then pass the details on to Jack’s mother.

Caroline said: “I organised this because I am a mother and a grandmother. I have a grandson who is the same age as that little boy. My grandson has his daddy to grow up with, he hasn’t. We just wanted to help give this boy a start in life that his daddy would have wanted. The funds raised here will be put in a bank account for him. He can then use the money for anything he likes, to go on holiday, buy something in memory of his daddy or use it to start saving for university.”

She added: “This is not about religion, it is not about the colour of your skin, it is not about the soldiers, it is about that little boy. I appreciate everyone who has turned up today. It is just wonderful to see.”

During her speech at the event, Caroline stated that she was glad the vigil was peaceful as she proved West Yorkshire Police wrong, after claiming they did “everything possible to try and stop this from taking place”.

Speaking at the vigil, Councillor Ralph Berry said: “It is good to see people turning out to pay tribute to the poor soldier from Woolwich. It shows that Bradford is pulling together and showing our thoughts and feelings for the family at this time. I know that everybody, from all parts of the city, have been touched by this and this is just a small thing for Bradford to do.”

Also in attendance, Zulfi Karim, secretary general for the Bradford Council for Mosques, said: “It is about supporting the community, supporting people regardless of their race or religion. It is times like this we have got to come together as community. This is a loss, a very sad loss and this is not what Islam or any other religion teaches anybody and we have got to remember that.”

Faultlines – The Second Generation to be performed in Bradford

0

A ‘touching yet hard hitting’ play is coming to the Carlisle Business Centre in Bradford on May 23.

The Open Minds Theatre Company’s has been touring across Yorkshire this month.
The play, last performed in 2008 to a sold out audiences, tells a story that covers the 1980’s steel strike, the National Front march in Yorkshire, “paki-bashing”, and schools which were part of the problem and not the solution for a new wave of immigrant young people.

The play is described as hard hitting and does not shy away from the fact that racism can exist on both sides.
Written by Steve Rogers and Taiba Yasseen (Presenter and adviser, Channel 4’s Make Bradford British series), the play is based on the real stories from that second generation, who came in the 70s to Rotherham with their families.

Faultlines – The Second Generation tells of what it was like to settle in a new country, go to school and make home in a very different culture.

Asian family life, talk of arrival, Eid and arranged marriages is the backdrop to the ruthless reality of the time, as is the reaction of white neighbours, teachers and workmates to the new arrivals.
It is a story which has a direct relevance to today and the shifting ethnic landscape of Britain.

The play is in the city for one day only with tickets costing £8 and £6 concessions. Tickets are bookable through 07541475159 or by e-mail to steve@omtc.org.uk

The first episode of a new two-part documentary will air this week showcasing individuals in the city.

The program, called ‘Bradford: City of Dreams’, will be broadcast on BBC2 on Thursday, May 9, at 8pm.

Speaking about the program, the BBC said: “Bradford was once one of the richest cities in Britain and it has always been a magnet for economic migrants. From the Irish rural poor who came to work in the mills in the 1800s, via German Jewish merchants who traded in cloth at the turn of the 19th century and on through the waves of Asian immigration in the second half of the 20th Century, people have come to Bradford to make their way in the world.

“Since the 1960s, the mills, factories and exchanges have nearly all closed, and the once grand city is a shadow of its former self. But rising from the ashes of this industrial collapse there is a new breed of Bradfordians who, with a mix of Yorkshire grit, 21st-century nous and plenty of chutzpah are managing to fulfill their dreams.”

This week’s episode features EnKahnz director Naveed Khan, builder Graham Swain and business owner Rajen Da.

Report Reveals Bradford is One of the Cheapest for Petrol

0

A recent report on unleaded fuel has identified Bradford as one of the cheapest places for petrol in the United Kingdom.

Don’t start running to fill up your cars just yet as it will still cost you around £81.94 for a 60 litre tank and £95.60 for a 70 litre tank.

The report was carried out by Santander, which revealed that some parts of the country are paying over a £100 as petrol costs look to spiral out of control.

Findings also showed some areas had a 5.5 per cent increase for a 70 litre tank in just two months. Meanwhile, a 60 litre engine showed an increase of £4.38 on top of consumer’s usual price.

Bradford, along with Torquay, Kirkcaldy, Plymouth and Wigan, can rejoice a little after figures showed that none of them pay more than £96, no matter the tank size.

The five most expensive places to fill up are Dumfries, Durham, Hereford, Crewe and Oxford.

Santander now estimates that motorists who drive 1,000 miles will now spend over £180 on petrol every month, which is £10 more than they would have paid in January.

Alan Mathewson, CEO Santander Cards, said: “With the cost of fuel expected to reach its highest level in the coming weeks, families and car commuters are likely to be the hardest hit once again. Aside from mortgage costs, households in the UK already spend more on transport than any other living cost, so further hikes may well push many family budgets over the edge.”
