Bradford based intercultural arts hub, Kala Sangam are bringing together another delightful event involving dance, live music and cooking.

Balbir Singh Dance Company have been invited back to Bradford for a double bill performance of Champion of the Flatlands and Love & Spice.

Having grown up amongst the many rich cultures of Manningham in Bradford, Balbir Singh left the city to study at Northern School of Contemporary Dance before forging an internationally renowned career creating work that fuses traditional south Asian art and contemporary dance and music. The company is renowned for its ability to engage audiences who have little or no previous experience of the performing arts. This double bill is a perfect introduction to dance and the ideal alternative Christmas night out!

The evening features two exciting, but very different, performances:

Champion of the Flatlands is a highly original new work that tells a classic boy-meets-girl story though a fusion of two very different worlds – BMX ‘flatlands’ cycling and dance. The piece features Kathak dancers alongside four times U.K. BMX Flatland Champion and two times European BMX Flatland Champion Keelan Phillips who is known the world over for his creative flare and creation of signature BMX moves.

Love & Spice follows a couple looking back on their lives, reliving memories through meals they have shared. As the story unfolds a chef, cooking live on stage, creates the aromas to accompany these memories, using smell to take the audience on the same journey. With the incredible scent sure to get tummies rumbling, the audience is then treated to a free curry as part of the ticket price!

The evening will also feature a short performance by a group of young people from Community Works in Barkerend who have been working with both companies to develop a new piece of dance.

The event will take place on Saturday 16 December at Kala Sangam, St Peter’s House.
