Vicky Kaushal has shared his transformative journey for his upcoming film Chhaava, where he plays the legendary Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Directed by Laxman Utekar, the historical drama is set to release on 14 February.
At the film’s trailer launch, Kaushal revealed the extensive preparation required to step into the shoes of Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Maratha empire founder Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. “I feel shy to talk about the prep now that the work is done, but whatever was inside me, I gave it all to this. I had nothing more to give to any film than what I’ve given to this one,” he said.
Kaushal disclosed that he underwent intensive physical training, gaining 25 kg for the role. “I went from 80 kg to around 105 kg. I trained in horse riding, as well as sword, stick, and spear fighting for 6-7 months. Everything about this film was new to me.”
The actor also acknowledged the responsibility of portraying such a revered historical figure. “There are certain characters that make you feel scared, wondering if you’ll be able to do justice to them. That fear comes from knowing how deeply sentiments and faith are attached to such roles,” he said.
Chhaava marks Kaushal’s second collaboration with Utekar after the 2023 family drama Zara Hatke Zara Bachke. The film also stars Rashmika Mandanna as Maharani Yesubai, Sambhaji Maharaj’s wife, and Akshaye Khanna in a pivotal role.
Mandanna, who arrived at the trailer launch in a wheelchair following a gym injury, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity. “It’s an honour, as a girl from the South, to be playing a Maharani. Yesubai is the most privileged and special role I could have asked for in this lifetime.”
Director Laxman Utekar shared his vision for the project, calling it a dream to bring Sambhaji Maharaj’s sacrifices to global audiences. “I consider myself lucky that in our country lived such a great king who fought 127 battles and won every single one,” he said.
Producer Dinesh Vijan, known for hits like Stree and Hindi Medium, assured that Chhaava honours Sambhaji Maharaj’s legacy. “It’s my 20th year in the industry. All the hard work over these years has led us to be in a position to make such a film,” he said.
With an epic story and a dedicated cast, Chhaava promises to be a fitting tribute to the legendary Maratha ruler.
