Three huge dragonboats will be arriving in City Park on Tuesday January 20 to encourage people to sign up for a fund-raising event in May.

Teams are invited to sign up for what is expected to be the largest dragonboat race ever held in the North of England, whilst raising funds for the Lord Mayor of Bradford’s Appeal.

People will be able to view the boats and have their photos taken with the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Coun Mike Gibbons, from 11am.

The event, to be held on the River Aire at Roberts Park in Saltaire on Saturday May 9 is open to young people aged 12 and over and schools have been invited to take part with teachers and pupils teaming up.

Lord Mayor, Coun Mike Gibbons, said: “I hope people will come along on Tuesday and sign up for what promises to be a great fun day out for all the family while raising money for my appeal at the same time.

“Forty teams can take part so it promises to be quite a spectacle.”

This Dragonboat festival has been organised by the Lord Mayor’s Appeal Committee, and they have arranged for full instruction and training to be provided to all those wishing to participate.  No previous experience in boats is required.

Each team will consist of a maximum of 17 people – 16 paddlers and one drummer who will beat the time and a dragon boat instructor who will steer.

Anyone interested in entering a team should contact John Galt, Bradford Council’s Occupational Safety Advisor on 01274  431007.
