Ed Sheeran has unveiled Sapphire, the latest track from his upcoming album Play, marking a vibrant shift in sound and direction that celebrates connection, joy and cultural fusion.
Blending upbeat pop with South Asian musical influences, Sapphire features acclaimed Indian artist Arijit Singh on sitar, backing vocals and co-production. The track is produced by Ilya Salmanzadeh, Johnny McDaid and Savan Kotecha, and is being tipped as a standout song for summer 2025.
Speaking about the track, Sheeran said: “Sapphire was the first song I finished for Play that made me know where the album was heading. That’s why I chose to complete the recording process in Goa, surrounded by some of the best musicians in India.”
The song’s release is accompanied by a cinematic video, shot during Sheeran’s recent India tour by director Liam Pethick. The video features a rooftop performance at dawn, riverside scenes, bustling markets, and a visit to the A.R. Rahman music school, where Sheeran plays alongside local musicians. Cameos include a studio session and motorcycle ride with Arijit Singh, as well as an appearance from Bollywood legend Shah Rukh Khan.
A Punjabi version of the song, with more vocals from Singh, is set to be released in the coming weeks.
“Sapphire is my favourite song on the album,” Sheeran added. “It was a journey to get Arijit on the track, but such an amazing day of music and family.”
With its blend of heartfelt emotion and global sounds, Sapphire looks set to strike a chord with fans worldwide — and set the tone for Sheeran’s most internationally inspired album yet.
