Rajkumar Santoshi’s next movie, based on Mahatma Gandhi and Nathuram Godse, his assassin, is set to ruffle some feathers as the acclaimed director attempts to clash the Gandhian ideology with Godse’s Right wing ideology.

MK Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on 30 January 1948, after a morning prayer session. Godse was caught at the venue itself and was put into trial, where he was sentenced to death on 8 November 1949. Godse, reportedly, in the trial gave out his reasons for assassinating the ‘Father of the Nation’. As per the statement, Godse held Mahatma Gandhi responsible for the partition of India. MK Gandhi was also perceived as ‘anti-Hindu’ by his killer.  Born to a Brahmin family in Pune, India, Nathuram Godse was heavily influenced by the ideas of Hindu Mahasabha and RSS.

‘Gandhi-Godse Ek Yudh’ attempts to create a fictional world, where Mahatma Gandhi survives the attack and later meets Nathuram Godse in jail, wherein the two engage in a heated ideological debate. Deepak Anatni, looks promising playing Mahatma Gandhi while Chinmay Mandelker plays Nathuram Godse.

Rajkumar Santoshi’s earlier historical film, ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’ in 2002, starring Ajay Devgn was an evergreen hit and continues to be on the watch-list of many. Considering, the director’s record with historical movies, Gandhi-Godse Ek Yudh, does promise to be an interesting movie.

The movie hits cinemas on 26 January, India’s Republic Day.
