Children in Gateshead have been described as “amazing” by a councillor after youngsters at a Low Fell primary school bought chocolates and cards for hospital staff.
Pupils at Carr Hill Primary School pooled money that was meant to have been spent on a leaver’s party and hoodies, and instead bought chocolates and cards for the nurses and staff at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead.
Paul Harris, head teacher, said: “I was so proud of these children for wanting to do something for the amazing staff at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The hospital is just up the road from our school and the children have shown how much they appreciate the work they are doing to help our local community.
“I was genuinely moved by their thoughtful and selfless gesture. It is an emotional time for all the staff and the children and to see them thinking of others in this way made me feel privileged to be their headteacher.”
Coun Gary Haley, cabinet member for children and young people, at Gateshead Council, paid tribute to the youngsters.
“I’ve seen so many wonderful gestures of kindness and these are two examples of why the children in Gateshead are amazing. I’m overwhelmed that children, of such a young age, have shown such compassion for others,” he added.
“Knowing that children understand the important role the NHS have alongside their own role to stay at home and do everything they can to help save lives is a real testament to the courage and character of the children in Gateshead.”
