It looks like Slumdog Millionaire might be making a comeback—but with a twist! Los Angeles-based production house Bridge7 has officially acquired the sequel and TV rights to the Oscar-winning phenomenon. Yes, you read that right. The Slumdog Millionaire universe could soon be expanding, and we can’t help but wonder—will lightning strike twice?
The newly launched banner, run by producer Swati Shetty and veteran CAA agent Grant Kessman, secured the rights from UK-based Celador, the original producers of the iconic 2008 film. In a statement, Shetty and Kessman shared, “Some stories stay with us long after the credits roll, and Slumdog Millionaire is undoubtedly one of them. Its narrative is universal… bridging entertainment with profound human experiences.”
Released in 2008 and directed by Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire followed the jaw-dropping journey of Jamal Malik (played by a fresh-faced Dev Patel), an 18-year-old from Mumbai’s Juhu slums. As he sat on the Kaun Banega Crorepati hot seat, correctly answering question after question, his incredible backstory unfolded—revealing how life’s twists and turns gave him the answers to everything but love (or did it?). The film swept the Oscars with eight wins and became a global sensation.
So, what can we expect from this sequel? Fans are already buzzing with questions: Will it revisit Jamal and Latika’s lives years later? Or will it follow a brand-new character with their own million-rupee destiny?
The internet, of course, has opinions. One X user wrote, “Hope they won’t destroy the good memory of this movie.” Another chimed in, “Are they bringing back the same characters or telling another story of someone else on the game show?” And, in the truest spirit of cautious optimism, someone added, “Hope they capture the magic of the original without forcing it—fingers crossed!”
For now, Bridge7 hasn’t spilled too many details. But given the emotional depth, universal themes, and killer soundtrack that made the original an instant classic, expectations are sky-high.
