From Shahid Kapoor’s younger brother to being featured on Forbes Asia’s 30 Under 30 list, Ishaan Khatter is carving a remarkable path in the film industry.
His journey exemplifies a career that quietly advances, accumulating milestones until one day you realise he has reached something significant.
Recently, Ishaan joined the jury of the 2026 Biarritz Film Festival Nouvelles Vagues in France.
He shared this honour with Hollywood actress and filmmaker Kristen Stewart, Canadian actress Whitney Peak, French actor-director Raphaƫl Quenard, filmmaker Nathan Ambrosioni, actor Suzy Bemba, Italian director Carolina Cavalli, and British actress Esme Creed-Miles.
As the only Indian actor on this year’s jury, Ishaan finds himself among those shaping the future of global cinema.
In his unguarded Instagram post, he wrote, “In Biarritz with the coolest gang on jury duty. Replenishing my cinematic appetite, Nouvelles Vagues baby. Viva cinema.”
This festival, which celebrates young talents and emerging voices, has become one of Europe’s most-followed events, emphasising the importance of creative credibility in the film community.
For those familiar with Ishaan’s career, his appointment to Biarritz feels deserved rather than surprising.
His first significant role was in “Beyond the Clouds” in 2017, directed by the renowned Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi.
The film premiered at the BFI London Film Festival, and The Hollywood Reporter praised Ishaan’s “noteworthy screen charisma,” leading him to win the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.
His career thereafter has been a careful progression, starting with commercial success in “Dhadak” (2018) and culminating in critical acclaim for Mira Nair’s adaptation of “A Suitable Boy” (2020).
He reached an international audience in 2024 with Netflix’s “The Perfect Couple,” starring alongside Nicole Kidman.
However, it was his role in “Homebound,” directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, that truly transformed the narrative around him. Premiering in the Un Certain Regard section at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, the film received a nine-minute standing ovation, which was a testament to its impact and Ishaan’s performance.
“Homebound” went on to the Toronto International Film Festival’s Gala Presentations, with Variety highlighting the chemistry between Ishaan and co-star Vishal Jethwa.
The film resonated deeply, especially with diaspora audiences seeking themes of identity and belonging.
In addition to his acting accolades, Ishaan made history as the first Indian male actor to represent Cartier, the iconic French luxury brand.
This marked a significant moment for Indian talent on the global fashion stage.
He was also named on the Gold House Gold List 2026 as the sole Indian male actor featured this year, and he made Forbes Asia’s 30 Under 30 list in 2025.
This recognition feels like the latest chapter in a career that has steadily built a global presence from the start.
Looking ahead, Ishaan has announced his next project, “Jugaadu,” directed by Palash Vaswani, known for the acclaimed series “Gullak.”
This full-scale comedy features a talented ensemble cast, including Abhishek Banerjee and veteran actor Nirmal Rishi. With Abhishek Banerjee’s strong background in character performance, their collaboration promises to deliver genuine comedic chemistry.
From the BFI London Film Festival to the beaches of Biarritz, from a BBC period drama to a Cannes standing ovation, and from luxury campaigns to comedy films, Ishaan Khatter at 30 is an actor who refuses to be pigeonholed.
His jury seat at the Cannes Film Festival is yet another reflection of his remarkable journey and versatility in the world of cinema.
