James Gunn has addressed the online backlash surrounding the new teaser for Superman: Legacy, particularly the criticism about David Corenswet’s appearance as the iconic superhero. While the teaser received widespread praise for showcasing Superman in flight, some viewers pointed out that Corenswet’s face looked “goofy” and his eyes appeared too far apart. There were also complaints about the CGI, with some claiming that it contributed to an odd visual effect.
Responding to a user’s comment on Threads, Gunn clarified that there is “absolutely zero CG” in Corenswet’s face. He explained that the distorted appearance was due to the use of a wide-angle lens, which can alter the appearance of facial features when placed up close. “People’s faces can look different when you put a wide-angle lens up close,” Gunn noted, pointing out that the background shot of Svalbard, featured in the teaser, is entirely real, as is Corenswet himself.
The director’s clarification offers insight into why the face appears “off” in the teaser. Wide-angle lenses are known for distorting features, especially when used in close-up shots, which appears to be the case here.
Superman: Legacy is the third reboot of the beloved character and will introduce a fresh chapter in the new DC Universe, separate from the previous DCEU. Corenswet takes over the role from Henry Cavill, and the film also stars Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, and Edi Gathegi, among others. It is set to hit cinemas on 11 July, 2025.
