Jay-Z and Beyoncé made a rare public appearance on Monday night, walking the red carpet at the Los Angeles premiere of Mufasa: The Lion King in support of their 12-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. Blue Ivy voices Kiara, the daughter of Simba (Donald Glover) and Nala (Beyoncé), in this prequel to Disney’s 2019 photorealistic remake of The Lion King. Both Beyoncé and Donald Glover reprise their roles as Nala and Simba, respectively.

The family’s appearance came just a day after Jay-Z was named in a civil lawsuit alleging sexual assault. Filed as an amendment to an earlier lawsuit originally naming Sean “Diddy” Combs, the case accuses Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, of raping a 13-year-old girl in 2000.

In a statement released on Sunday, Jay-Z dismissed the claims as a “blackmail attempt” orchestrated by attorney Tony Buzbee. Calling the allegations “idiotic,” he expressed deep concern over the impact on his family:

“My only heartbreak is for my family. My wife and I will have to sit our children down, one of whom is at the age where her friends will surely see the press and ask questions about the nature of these claims, and explain the cruelty and greed of people,” he wrote. “I mourn yet another loss of innocence. Children should not have to endure such at their young age. It is unfair to have to try to understand inexplicable degrees of malice meant to destroy families and human spirit.”

Despite the controversy, the Carters focused on celebrating Blue Ivy’s achievement at the premiere. Before the screening, Beyoncé and Blue Ivy joined their castmates on stage as director Barry Jenkins delivered opening remarks.

The public had mixed reactions to Jay-Z’s presence at the premiere. While many applauded his support for his daughter, others saw his appearance as a calculated PR move. One user on X (formerly Twitter) remarked: “The number one rule when your name is involved in a scandal is to appear normal & unbothered and go on in public like nothing is happening. That’s PR 101.”

Another wrote: “He absolutely should be there to support his child.”

Meanwhile, some criticised Jay-Z’s involvement with the premiere, with one comment reading: “Jay-Z pretending to be unbothered.”
