Bollywood and Netflix star Manisha Koirala is set to become an Ambassador for the UK-based ovarian cancer support charity Ovacome in January 2025. A decade after her own battle with stage 4 ovarian cancer, Koirala is now dedicated to using her influential platform to support others affected by the disease, raise awareness about ovarian cancer symptoms, and address critical health inequalities in the UK and worldwide.
Every year, 7,500 people in the UK are diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Through her role with Ovacome, Koirala will work directly with cancer patients and survivors, offering them encouragement and support while emphasising the importance of early detection and comprehensive care. With many ovarian cancer cases still diagnosed in later stages, Koirala aims to highlight the key symptoms of the disease and advocate for greater public knowledge and timely medical intervention.
“I want to use my voice to not only support cancer patients but to raise awareness about the need for equitable healthcare access and the importance of knowing the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer,” Koirala said. “Having faced cancer myself, I know how isolating and challenging the journey can be, and I believe it is essential that we all play a part in changing that reality for others.”
Ovacome’s CEO, Victoria Clare, expressed enthusiasm about Koirala’s appointment, stating, “We hear daily from those we support about the isolation they feel following an ovarian cancer diagnosis. Manisha’s decision to share her own experience and challenge the stigma associated with the disease is deeply inspiring and will help so many amongst our community. We are really looking forward to welcoming Manisha as our official Ambassador.”
Koirala, the author of Healed, a memoir documenting her cancer journey, has been widely recognised for her resilience. Last year, she was honoured in the British Parliament, and she has received personal messages of support from Kate Middleton and King Charles.
In addition to her philanthropic efforts, Koirala continues to captivate audiences with her performance in Heeramandi, the Netflix series that has become one of India’s most successful OTT productions. Her portrayal in the series earned her the Best Actress award, solidifying her standing as a major figure in international cinema.
