Batley and Spen MP, Tracy Brabin, has backed local library initiatives in Kirklees and encourages residents to use the services.
The Royal Voluntary Service has been working with Kirklees Council to restart the Home Library Service, which was announced on June 15.
The service has continued online through lockdown and, since 22nd June, books have been delivered to residents who are otherwise unable to visit their local libraries.
Other community initiatives, such as Bookshelf run by Upper Batley High School, are also supporting local book services.
Bookshelf has been able to deliver books and resources to young people in the local community due to a four-week donation drive. They also opened their Bookshelf to students and local residents.
Library resources have been impacted by the COVID-19 lockdown but services are resuming following the easing of restrictions recently.
Tracy Brabin said: “As a child, libraries were a vital part of my education. They gave me the knowledge and confidence to believe I could have a career in the arts and I know many people have similar stories, which is why I’ve always fought to keep local libraries funded and open.
“With lockdown having a serious impact on library services that have already faced a decade of cuts, community initiatives such as the Home Library Service and Bookshelf are vital in giving people access to books and other resources. I encourage everyone to make full use of these initiatives so no one misses out on access to our wonderful library services.”
