The Academy Awards are undoubtedly the biggest event of the cinema calendar year. The Oscars celebrate the latest and greatest of what films have had to offer throughout the year and the nominations for the event are finally being announced.
This year, the nominations were announced over a livestream event by Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas. If you have been paying attention to the other award ceremonies this season, there were no real surprises in the line-up for the Oscars this year. Excitingly, Maria Bakalova did get a nomination for her performance in ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’, which saw the awards honouring a comedic performance for a change.
For the first time in history, two women have been nominated in the Best Director category with Chloe Zhao gaining one for ‘Nomadland’ and Emerald Fennell also getting one for ‘Promising Young Woman’. Chloe Zhao is currently expected to win the award.
‘The White Tiger’ also gathered itself a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay whilst ‘Mank’ surprisingly did not get a nomination for Best Original Screenplay. ‘Mank’ has, however, garnered itself the most nominations this year with 10 awards which beats out this season’s frontrunner ‘Nomadland’, which has six nominations. Also with six nominations is ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’, ‘Minari’, ‘Sound of Metal’ and ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’.
