As speculation continues over the future of James Bond, former 007 star Pierce Brosnan has made one thing clear-Britain’s most famous spy must remain British.

In a recent interview with The Sunday Telegraph, the GoldenEye actor addressed concerns that the franchise might lose its British essence after Amazon MGM Studios took creative control of the Bond films. Despite this shift in ownership, Brosnan remains steadfast in his belief that Bond’s nationality should never change.

“History has been passed on, and I’m very proud to have been part of the legacy of Bond,” he said. “It’s a given that Bond remains British.”

Brosnan, who played Bond across four films, also backed the decision of long-time producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson to hand over creative control to Amazon, acknowledging the boldness of their move.

“It takes great courage for them to let go,” he admitted. “I think it was the right decision, but I hope Amazon treats the character with dignity, imagination, and respect.”

However, the 71-year-old actor admitted that no one truly knows what will happen to 007 under Amazon’s watch.

“In this world that is moving so fast, at the speed of light, this change does come with a certain lament,” he reflected.

As for the next Martini-drinking, Aston Martin-driving superspy, speculation is running wild. Among the frontrunners for the role are:

Andrew Garfield – The British-American Spider-Man star remains a bookmakers’ favourite.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson – The Kick-Ass and Kraven the Hunter actor has long been linked to the role.
James Norton – The Happy Valley star has also been tipped as a strong contender.
Oscar Isaac & Pedro Pascal – Though talented, the Chilean-American stars face the hurdle of Bond’s nationality.

With Daniel Craig’s tenure ending with No Time to Die in 2021, fans have been eagerly awaiting news of the franchise’s next chapter. However, producer Barbara Broccoli previously stated in June 2022 that the next Bond film was “a long way from starting.”
