With just 50 days to go until the global release of Coolie, the highly anticipated action thriller starring South Indian superstar Rajinikanth, the film’s producers have officially announced the Hindi title: Coolie: The Powerhouse.
The announcement was made on Thursday by Sun Pictures, the production house behind the project, who also unveiled a striking new poster to mark the countdown to release day. Taking to social media platform X, they wrote: “Deva’s rage begins in 50 days! #CoolieIn50Days #Coolie in Hindi is now #CoolieThePowerhouse. #Coolie releasing worldwide August 14th.”
A section of the media had claimed that the Hindi version of the film had been titled ‘Majdoor’. However, the Hindi title evoked a mixed response from netizens on social media.
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie is Rajinikanth’s 171st film and is expected to be a high-octane action thriller centred around the theme of gold smuggling. Interestingly, the director has confirmed that the film will not be part of his much-hyped Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU) and will instead stand alone in its narrative.
The film boasts an all-star pan-Indian cast, with appearances from Nagarjuna (Telugu), Upendra (Kannada), Soubin Shahir (Malayalam), and Sathyaraj (Tamil), alongside Bollywood icon Aamir Khan, who will feature in a cameo. Actresses Shruti Haasan, Reba Monica John, and Junior MGR also play significant roles.
Coolie also reunites Rajinikanth and Sathyaraj after nearly four decades, the last time they shared the screen was in the 1986 Tamil blockbuster Mr Bharath, where Sathyaraj portrayed Rajinikanth’s father. Notably, Sathyaraj had previously turned down roles in Rajinikanth’s hits Enthiran and Sivaji.
The film’s music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander, while Girish Gangadharan handles cinematography. Philomin Raj is on editing duties, and the film is produced by Kalanithi Maran of Sun Pictures.
