Indian indie cinema just had a landmark moment-Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal’s debut production, Girls Will Be Girls, has won the prestigious John Cassavetes Award at the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards!
The coming-of-age drama, directed by Shuchi Talati, has been making waves on the festival circuit, and this latest win solidifies its place as a game-changer for Indian independent filmmaking. The film, made on a budget of under $1 million, triumphed over strong contenders, including Big Boys, Ghostlight, Jazzy, and The People’s Joker.
For Richa Chadha, this award isn’t just professional success-it’s deeply personal. “To be the first Indian actor and producer to win an Independent Spirit Award is overwhelming,” she said. “This victory belongs to all of us fighting to tell diverse, authentic stories.”
Ali Fazal echoed the sentiment, calling the film’s journey “not too shabby” as it went from winning at Sundance to closing with a Spirit Award win. He also took a heartfelt moment to acknowledge Chadha’s sacrifice as a new mother, travelling for the awards while leaving their baby girl behind.
“The girls are bringing back home the trophies,” he wrote in an emotional Instagram post, adding, “Big big moment for INDIA… and cinema in general.”
Director Shuchi Talati described the project as a labour of love, saying the award was a powerful affirmation of their storytelling.
This win places Girls Will Be Girls in the same conversation as some of the most powerful independent films of the year, proving that Indian cinema isn’t just about big-budget spectacles-it’s also about raw, intimate stories that push boundaries.
And it’s not just Chadha and Fazal making waves-Ali Fazal pointed out that indie films like Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light and Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies are leading a quiet revolution. “All eyes on independent,” he declared.
