The next chapter in the Avengers saga is fast approaching, and it’s safe to say that fans are in for a ride like no other. Avengers: Doomsday will see the return of Robert Downey Jr. to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but not as the beloved Tony Stark – instead, he’ll take on the role of one of the franchise’s most iconic villains: Victor Von Doom, aka Doctor Doom.
In a recent interview with Deadline, the Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony Russo, opened up about Downey’s intense commitment to this transformative role, offering fans a sneak peek into the preparation process behind the blockbuster.
Joe Russo described just how deeply Downey is immersing himself in the character, saying, “It’s a very intense process developing the character. He’s so immersed in it. He is so dialed in.” The level of dedication has clearly left an impression on the directors, with Anthony Russo adding, “That’s the kind of artist he is. That’s the kind of actor he is.”
It’s clear that Downey’s passion for creating multifaceted, compelling characters runs deep. Joe revealed that Downey is actively involved in crafting Doctor Doom’s backstory, even working on costume ideas. “I think he just loves really rich three-dimensional characters, and I think he sees a real opportunity here with that character,” Joe shared.
The announcement of Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom last year at Comic-Con sent shockwaves through the fanbase, marking a stunning departure from his iconic role as Iron Man, which he played for over a decade. Fans won’t have to wait long to see Downey in action, as Avengers: Doomsday is slated for release on 1 May, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars following closely behind in May 2027.
And if Downey’s return wasn’t enough to excite fans, the Russo brothers have teased other major castings. Captain America star Chris Evans is reportedly returning to the MCU, though in an undisclosed role, and Hayley Atwell will reprise her role as the ever-popular Agent Peggy Carter.
With the Russo brothers at the helm – the visionary duo behind Avengers: Infinity War, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Captain America: Civil War – it’s clear that Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be an epic chapter in the MCU that fans won’t want to miss.
