Director Robert Eggers is focusing on werewolves, another horror classic, after the success of Nosferatu. Eggers will direct Werwulf, a werewolf thriller set in the 13th century that he co-wrote with Sjón, who worked with him on The Northman. The film, which is scheduled for a Christmas Day, 2026, release, is once again being produced by Focus Features, the studio that produced Nosferatu.
According to reports, the script, which is set in medieval England, uses dialogue that is authentic to the era’s Old English, complete with translations and annotations to fully immerse viewers in its grim surroundings. The production has since switched to color, but it still maintains Eggers’ signature period drama aesthetics. Eggers had originally intended the movie to be in black and white.
The film will be produced by Eggers and Sjón, with Chris and Eleanor Columbus serving as executive producers and Focus Features handling distribution. The studio is counting on Werwulf to duplicate the box office success of Nosferatu, which brought in $156 million worldwide and became Eggers’ highest-grossing film to date. The studio is well-known for supporting Eggers’ unique projects like The Lighthouse and The Witch.
