Saif Ali Khan has opened up for the first time about the violent knife attack he suffered during an attempted robbery at his Bandra residence on 16 January. The actor, who lives in the house with his wife, Kareena Kapoor, and their two children, sustained stab wounds to his thoracic spine while trying to intervene during the confrontation. A piece of the knife had to be surgically removed from his body.

In a candid conversation with Delhi Times, Saif dismissed concerns about heightened security, stating that he does not plan to keep weapons at home.”Nothing will change. See, if you start doing that… because I don’t feel I’m under threat. It was not a premeditated attack. I think it just was a burglary attempt gone wrong. That poor guy, his life is more screwed than mine.”

Reflecting on the incident, Saif admitted that he might have reacted differently in hindsight:If I were in that room again, I would put on the light and first tell him, ‘Do you know who I am?’ And I think he would say, ‘Oh s**t! I’m in the wrong house.’ And I’d say, ‘Right, put the knife down and let’s talk about this.’”

However, he acknowledged that the situation unfolded too quickly for any rational response:”It was a mixture of anger, outrage, and a kind of defence. It was just too quick. And it was completely instinctive.”

What happened on 16 January?

Saif suffered six injuries, including two deep cuts, when an intruder broke into his home. The Mumbai Police later arrested a Bangladeshi national, identified as Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, in connection with the attack. The investigation is still ongoing.

The actor was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent surgery before being discharged on 21 January. He was seen returning home with bandages on his wrist and neck.

Saif’s return to public life

Despite the ordeal, Saif Ali Khan made his first public appearance since the attack just days ago, promoting his upcoming Netflix film, Jewel Thief. The actor’s resilience has been widely praised, with fans expressing relief over his recovery.
