The world of James Bond is no stranger to high-stakes twists, but its latest shake-up might be one of the most dramatic yet. For the first time in six decades, creative control of the iconic 007 franchise has officially shifted hands-entering a joint venture between Amazon MGM Studios and its longtime stewards, EON Productions.
Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, the power duo who have safeguarded Bond’s legacy for years, will remain co-owners of the franchise’s intellectual property, but Amazon now holds the creative reins. The move comes as speculation around Bond 26—and the next actor to don the tuxedo-reaches fever pitch
Since acquiring MGM in 2022, Amazon has held the distribution rights to the Bond catalogue, but Broccoli and Wilson had retained full creative authority—until now. In a statement on EON Productions’ website, Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, promised to “usher in the next phase of the legendary 007 for audiences around the world.”
Wilson, who has worked across the franchise for 60 years, revealed he will now step back to focus on art and charitable projects, marking the end of an era. His departure raises questions about how Bond’s future will be shaped under this new leadership.
While Bond fans wait for casting news, former 007 Daniel Craig has weighed in on the changing of the guard. After a 15-year run as the world’s most famous spy, Craig expressed his admiration for Wilson and Broccoli, calling his respect for them “constant and undiminished.”
“I wish Michael a long, relaxing (and well-deserved) retirement,” Craig shared in a statement, adding, “Whatever ventures Barbara goes on to do, I know they will be spectacular—and I hope I can be part of them.”
With the franchise now in Amazon’s creative hands, the next era of James Bond could take a bold new direction-whether that means a fresh storytelling approach, a shift to streaming, or a more modern reimagining of the spy icon.
