Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, renowned for his meticulous attention to detail and fiery on-set personality, is one of the most respected directors in the Indian film industry. His passion for perfectionism has shaped numerous iconic films, and one actor who had the privilege of working with him is Sharad Kelkar. Kelkar, who portrayed a negative role in Bhansali’s Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013), starring Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, recently opened up about his experience working with the legendary director.

In a recent candid interview, Kelkar described Bhansali as a “challenging” filmmaker, revealing the lengths to which the director goes to ensure his vision is fully realised. According to Kelkar, Bhansali’s approach can be demanding, even for seasoned actors. “He’s ruthless with actors,” Kelkar shared. “He always has a vision, and he is a painter first of all. He paints the film in his mind, and if there’s any problem with a painting, he makes it again. So, he has the same point of view. He is a bit of a perfectionist.”
Kelkar went on to explain how Bhansali’s relentless pursuit of perfection can sometimes be frustrating, but it’s ultimately what makes his films stand out. “There is something set in his mind – about what the characters would do and what the range would be. He pushes you a lot to make you come closer to his vision. So, at times, this push can be irritating for some people, others like it,” he continued.
The actor also highlighted the significance of a director who can push actors out of their comfort zones. “You see the scenes, you feel proud. You start understanding why the director made you do so, many times I hadn’t even done it. We need such directors who can push you, they shouldn’t get satisfied with what they have been done, only then will something good come out,” Kelkar said.
When asked if Bhansali would be as demanding with legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan, Kelkar revealed the director’s uncompromising nature, stating, “He can take as many takes as he wants even from him. He will not say, ‘Ok sir, very nice’, if he doesn’t feel so. He can easily say, ‘Sir one more, one more’.” Reflecting on his own experience, Kelkar added, “I haven’t been asked for too many takes, touchwood, he was very happy with me. However, I have seen many people do repeated takes.”
Despite the occasional frustration, it’s clear that Bhansali’s unwavering commitment to his craft and his actors is what makes him one of the most respected and influential filmmakers in the industry today.
