Radhika Apte is back, and this time she’s bringing a twisted, darkly comic tale of marriage gone rogue. Sister Midnight, her latest film, tells the story of a newlywed navigating the suffocating realities of an arranged marriage—until she decides to break free in the most unexpected way.
The film, which premiered at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, just dropped its official trailer, unveiled by Magnolia Pictures and Altitude. Apte plays Uma, a rebellious small-town woman who suddenly finds herself trapped in a tiny Mumbai apartment with a near-stranger for a husband. As she struggles to adjust to the dreary routine of married life, prying neighbours and the relentless pace of the city start to push her to the edge.
But instead of giving in, Uma leans into her unpredictability—embracing a wild, untamed side of herself that even she never knew existed.
Alongside Apte, Sister Midnight features Ashok Pathak, Chhaya Kadam, and Smita Tambe in pivotal roles. The film has already made waves on the festival circuit, screening in London, Denver, and Sitges. It even secured the Best Film award in the Next Wave section at Fantastic Fest, held at Austin’s Alamo Drafthouse theatres.
Written and directed by Karan Kandhari, Sister Midnight is gearing up for a theatrical release, hitting UK and Irish cinemas on 14 March 2025, before arriving in select US theatres in May.
Apte, known for her sharp performances in Mrs Undercover (2023), Monica, O My Darling (2022), and Raat Akeli Hai (2020), is once again set to deliver a character full of grit, complexity, and just the right amount of chaos.
